Beatles music to be in new video game
NEW YORK ñ The Beatles are coming to a game console near you.
For the first time, the legendary group’s music will be featured in the lucrative video game market in a deal with MTV Games and Harmonix, creators of the “Rock Band” series. The game is scheduled to make its debut sometime next year, according to a statement Thursday.
“The project is a fun idea which broadens the appeal of The Beatles and their music. I like people having the opportunity to get to know the music from the inside out,” said Paul McCartney.
Ringo Starr added: “The Beatles continue to evolve with the passing of time and how wonderful that The Beatles’ legacy will find its natural progression into the 21st century through the computerized world we live in. Let the games commence.”
The video game has become a key and profitable market for musical acts to expose their music to fans; some bands have debuted their music via video games.
Now they will get paid!!
The Beatles Onboard With ‘Rock Band’
It looks like the Beatles are coming to top-selling video game “Rock Band.”
The Beatles’ Apple Corps Ltd. and MTV have scheduled a press teleconference tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. ET to announce “an exclusive agreement to develop a global music project.”
Although the announcement does not offer details on the agreement, representatives for the Beatles have been talking to MTV’s “Rock Band” team for months.
If a deal is signed, “Rock Band” will have secured two of the top-selling catalog bands of all time for versions of the game. AC/DC recently became the subject of a “Rock Band Track Pack,” featuring 18 live versions of hits like “Thunderstruck and “Back in Black.” The title, like the band’s new album, “Black Ice,” is a Wal-Mart exclusive.
Both AC/DC and the Beatles remain absent from digital music services,
including the iTunes Music Store, AmazonMP3 and others.
MTV declined to comment.
Dan Akroyd confirms Ghostbusters game still exists
In a radio interview Wednesday morning, actor Dan Akroyd confirmed that Atari has picked up the Ghostbusters game–but don’t hold your breath on a release date.
The sad tale of the Ghostbusters game took a turn for the better today after actor Dan Akroyd told a Dallas radio station that the game is still alive.
During the interview with 105.3 KLLI, Akroyd said the game has been picked up by Atari, and is about “a year away” from being released.
The news is by no means definitive, but it’s a far cry from the doom and gloom fans experienced after former Ghostbusters developer Sierra Games was acquired and axed by parent publisher Activision Blizzard.
So, Ghostbuster fans can take solace in the fact that this game “might” be coming out in time for the 2009 holiday season, according to Dan Akroyd. Stock up on Ecto Cooler and tune in next year for more info.

Actor Bill Murray Excited For ëGhostbusters III,í Thanks To ëGhostbustersí Game
Fans have clamored for a third ìGhostbustersî film for years, but itís never happened. One reasons is because actor Bill Murray (aka Peter Venkman) was against it.
But in recent weeks, thatís started to change. Writers behind ìThe Officeî are working on a script for a brand-new ìGhostbusters.î
The question has been whether Murray will show up for it. It looks like he very well might, actually, and the reason comes from an unlikely source: the video game.
Movie site Ainít It Cool News attended Fantastic Fest this week, where Murray made a surprise appearance to promote his new movie, ìCity of Ember.î During a Q&A, someone asked him about his thoughts on the proposed ìGhostbusters III.î And thatís where the game comes in!!
ì[Murray] also went on to say that his enthusiasm for Ghostbusters was heightened after recording the voice of Peter Venkman for the video game over the summer. In fact, he said he found himself walking down the street singing the Ghostbusters theme song and then thought people walking around him were going to start yelling at him to ìget over yourself, Bill,î so he stoppedÖ But the enthusiasm was there. ì
As a fellow ìGhostbustersî fanboy, this has me extremely excited. Now, we just need news on whoís picking up the publishing rights to the ìGhostbustersî game so it can come out.
Ghostbusters game delayed to 2009!!
The new “Ghostbusters” game, which was scheduled to come out this fall, may have been delayed.
But beyond a vague statement from a PR rep that the game is “not canceled,” there’s been no indication yet of what will happen to the “Ghostbusters” game. Since it’s so close to completion, surely it won’t just be thrown to oblivion and never published, right?
Sony Pictures, which of course owns the rights to “Ghostbusters” and licensed the IP to Vivendi last year, has said that they are working with Activision Blizzard “to evaluate various options surrounding the release of the ‘Ghostbusters’ video game.” That’s obviously vague, but it does contain an important nugget: it wants the game to be released, one way or another.
Sony goes on to state that “this has presented [Sony Pictures Consumer Products] with an opportunity to reevaluate the game release marketing strategy to potentially coincide with the 25th anniversary of the original film in ’09.”
So the studio’s plan now is to get the game released in 2009. But who will publish it? There’s no official word yet, but my understanding from further reporting is that Activision Blizzard and Sony are talking to other publishers about picking up the game right now. Given the strength of the brand and the marketing that has already gone into the game, I can’t imagine the studio will have any trouble finding multiple interested partners. The only question may be whether that new publisher can reach a deal with Activision Blizzard to pay for the millions already spent on development.
Of course regardless of who releases it, developers Terminal Reality and Red Fly now have an extra year to work on the game. So there’s no reason it shouldn’t be really good.
This will be fun!
Sting Can Be Your Hero, Baby
Every note you fake, it will look like Sting is watching you.
The British soft-rocker is the latest hitmaker to lend his imageóand a strings-happy tuneóto the megahot Guitar Hero franchise, which in recent years has welcomed Metallica and Aerosmith and noted strummers like Slash and Tom Morello into the pixelated fold.
Sting’s upcoming contribution will be to the new Guitar Hero World Tour, which also boasts the stylings of Tool. Players will either be able to “take the stage” and play to wild crowds as Sting or “jam” alongside him on the song “Demolition Man.”
This version of Activision’s carpal tunnel-inducing funfest will also feature microphone and drumkit attachments for full-on battle of the bandsóas well as composing and editing software, for those quieter moments when the keg is empty and your “drummer” is passed out on the floor.
I WANT IT FOR WII!!!
Rock Band releasing Rush album for download
With nearly 40 gold and platinum records on their walls, Rush have clearly conquered the world of music. Now the Toronto-based rock legends are looking to dominate another industry: video games.
Harmonix Music Systems announced on Thursday it will release Rush’s 1981 classic album Moving Pictures for download to its popular Rock Band title, where gamers play plastic instruments in time with the songs on screen. The entire seven-track album will be available to Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 owners on Tuesday for about $11, or 880 Microsoft Points, the currency used by Microsoft for its console. Gamers will also be able to download individual songs for about $2 each, or 160 points.
Harmonix has made dozens of songs available to download for Rock Band since the game’s release in November, but Moving Pictures is just the fourth full album, following releases from Judas Priest, The Pixies and The Cars.
Moving Pictures is likely to sell better than previous album releases as Rock Band devotees, as well as the game’s own designers, have shown a particular affinity for Rush. The game’s online message boards have been flooded with demands for more material from the band since the title hit stores.
Rock Band was originally released with a cover of the band’s biggest hit, Tom Sawyer, from Moving Pictures, with four more tracks ó two versions of Working Man, Limelight (also from Moving Pictures) and Closer to the Heart ó eventually made available for download.
Limelight and the first version of Working Man were released as covers, but the later version and Closer to the Heart were master tracks featuring the actual band, illustrating the clout Harmonix now has with the music industry. A few years ago, Harmonix had difficulty getting bands to license master tracks to its Guitar Hero series of games. But over the past year or so, the Guitar Hero franchise ó now owned by Activision ó and Rock Band have exploded in popularity, putting the game publishers firmly in the driving seat.
Bonanza for game publishers
All of the downloadable Moving Pictures songs will be master tracks, including Tom Sawyer and Limelight.
Sales of downloadable tracks have also proved to be a bonanza for the game publishers and bands alike ó Harmonix says it has sold more than 20 million songs since Rock Band launched.
Andy Curran, artists and repertoire manager for Anthem Records, Rush’s label, says there were also initially some security concerns over supplying game developers with master tracks. Some bands had seen their masters leaked out.
“There has been a large concern about letting the master tapes going out to anyone,” he says. “When we passed that hurdle, and they could give us a guarantee that these wouldn’t leak out Ö then we got the green light.”
Curran says the band was an easy sell on the Guitar Hero and Rock Band as the games are turning a whole new generation on to their music.
“They thought it was fun and immediately embraced it,” he says.
In a video interview on the game’s website, the band members admitted to being rookies at Rock Band but said they were impressed by its popularity.
“I don’t have a set-up at home,” said singer and bassist Geddy Lee. “But my kids and my friends love it.”
Guitarist Alex Lifeson joked that while playing the game might be the next best thing to actually being in Rush, there are still some aspects Rock Band can’t duplicate.
“To simulate the feeling you need to get about two hours sleep for a week and a half,” he said.
“Make sure you have some people in front of you that are male only,” Lee added.
‘Wallace & Gromit’ to become episodic video game
LOS ANGELES – “Wallace & Gromit” are going on a new adventure.
Telltale Games is creating an episodic video game based on Aardman Animations’ Oscar-winning animated film series titled “Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Adventures.” The popular stop-motion clay animated franchise stars the cheese-loving, hair-brained inventor Wallace (voiced by Peter Sallis) and his long-suffering loyal pooch, Gromit.
“We’re certainly going for the clay look with this,” Telltale Games CEO Dan Connors told The Associated Press. “Clay presents a challenge if you really get into the detail of it. For example, adding fingerprints in a medium where there aren’t any is one of the discussions of how far we should go with the game’s detail.”
“Grand Adventures” will allow gamers to play as both Wallace and Gromit, engaging in zany entrepreneurial schemes and tinkering with kooky contraptions. Connors said “Grand Adventures” will feature more physical and situation-based comedy and would likely follow the distribution model of Telltale’s episodic video game series “Sam & Max.”
Aardman Animations has produced three Academy Award-winning “Wallace & Gromit” animated short films as well as the full-length feature film “The Curse of The Were-Rabbit,” which won an animated film Oscar in 2006. “A Matter of Loaf and Death,” a fourth animated short starring the twosome, is currently in production.
The characters previously appeared in the standalone games “Cracking Contraptions,” “Project Zoo” and “Curse of The Were-Rabbit.”
Connors hopes the new take on “Wallace & Gromit” will be more true to the franchise than previous games.
“The other games captured the personality, but all you ended up doing was running through the world,” said Connors. “It was a standard platform game. We feel like the gameplay should be more of an experience. You should be able to interact with the other characters and really feel like you’re in the world of ‘Wallace & Gromit.'”
Sweeeeeeeet!!!
Jimi Hendrix coming to ‘Guitar Hero’
LOS ANGELES – Jimi Hendrix is coming to “Guitar Hero.”
The Seattle-based company Experience Hendrix, which controls the rock icon’s musical legacy, is providing Hendrix’s music and likeness for the latest “Guitar Hero” video game, Aaron Grant, a spokesman for publisher and developer Activision and Red Octane, told The Associated Press on Thursday.
It’s the first time Hendrix’s likeness will be showcased in the game.
An avatar of Hendrix as well as the song “The Wind Cries Mary” and a live version of “Purple Haze,” which was recorded in 1969 at the San Diego Sports Arena, will be included on “Guitar Hero World Tour” ó the fourth edition of the popular game franchise scheduled for release Oct. 27.
“World Tour” will be the first “Guitar Hero” to feature playable drums and a microphone.
Experience Hendrix provided Activision and Red Octane with various songs from Hendrix, who famously played the Woodstock music festival in 1969 and died of a drug overdose in 1970. Other Hendrix tunes would be released in the future as downloadable content for the game, Grant said.
