Great news!!

Foo Fighters Ready To Return To The Road

Foo Fighters checked in with fans today about the status of the band’s tour plans following Dave Grohl’s stage fall, which dislocated his ankle and broke his fibula. The injury canceled the Foo’s European tour but it won’t stop the band from celebrating the Fourth of July and the group’s 20th anniversary.

“Can’t f***ing wait for the 4th!!! See you at home, DC,” the band posted online Monday.

The holiday extravaganza takes place at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. A poster announcing the show last fall declared “Amazing 20th Anniversary!” and “Never! Never! Never before a show like this!” Along with Grohl & Co., the gig includes Buddy Guy, Gary Clark Jr, Heart, Joan Jett, LL Cool J feat. DJ Z-Trip, Trouble Funk and Trombone Shorty. And it wouldn’t be the Fourth without fireworks, a motorcycle rally and BBQ!

The D.C. show is the first stop on the Foo Fighters’ upcoming North American schedule, which runs through Oct. 17 in Anaheim, Calif.

Today’s post didn’t mention anything about Grohl’s health, but it looks like he must be feeling well if he’s all set to rock this weekend.

Grohl fell off stage June 12, two songs into the band’s set at Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg, Sweden. In a blog post penned June 16, Grohl said he “wound up feet first over the Edge (pun intended), dropping about 12 feet, dislocating my ankle and snapping my fibula like an old pair of take out chopsticks. Whoopsie daisy. Not good.”

After medics popped his ankle back into place, Grohl returned to the stage and kept playing, with the help of an EMT who held his ankle in place until his cast arrived. He walked offstage for a few songs to get fitted with the cast and then came back once more to finish the gig, which he calls “the single most bizarre Foo Fighters show in the entire 20 years of being a band.”

Following surgery and getting six metal screws in his leg, the band canceled the remaining dates on its summer European excursion, including its appearance at Glastonbury, so Grohl could recover.

Rock and Rolling Stones!!

Rolling Stones Announcement Soon?

Reports of billboards displaying classic Rolling Stones imagery placed along roadsides in several markets just might mean the band is close to announcing its 2015 tour.

Once again all eyes are on SongMango.com, the website dedicated to rock ’n’ roll that reported last week that The Rolling Stones might announce tour dates at any moment. Although almost a full week has gone by since SongMango.com started raising the hopes of Stones fans from sea to shining sea, no tour has yet been revealed. However, that may change soon.

Turns out billboards carrying the band’s signature graphics, including the famous tongue, have popped up in Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Orlando, Minneapolis, Columbus, Rochester, Kansas City, Dayton, Dallas and Milwaukee. What’s more, some billboards tease that something will happen on Wednesday while others proclaim that Thursday is the day.

Meanwhile, The Rolling Stones Twitter feed is pumping #Satisfaction Thursday.

But not all news, albeit, even rumors and gossip, is good. Without citing a source, SoundMango.com says previous plans for shows at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl and Denver’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre may not happen. While L.A. may be losing a Bowl gig, the article goes on to say that “there will be at least one tour stop, and probably two promotional-type shows somewhere in the city.”

SongMango.com also gave more information about last week’s report that The Rolling Stones would perform its classic Sticky Fingers album in its entirety. Now the website is saying that the band will play the LP “at two to-be-determined ‘very special’ smaller shows.”

The website also posted what it believes to be the schedule for the Stones, showing a May through July outing that includes San Diego, Nashville, Raleigh and other markets.

Toronto’s Massey Hall Set for $135M, Seven-Year Renovation

Massey Hall, the 121-year-old Toronto live entertainment theater whose hallowed stage has been graced by such acts as Neil Young, George Gershwin, Rush, Igor Stravinsky, Bob Dylan, Luciano Pavarotti and Johnny Cash, is undergoing Phase 1 of a seven-year revitalization project, its president and CEO, Charles Cutts, announced Monday (Feb. 23) at the venue.

“Today marks the beginning of an important journey for this unique Canadian cultural institution,” Cutts said from the stage. “Massey Hall is not only a national historic site that we all treasure, but a place where Canadian music history is made. It’s been that way for 120 years, and will be for the next 120. This seven-year revitalization project will not only result in an improved Massey Hall for future generations, but will bring it alive in exciting new ways.

“This revitalization will set the stage for the corporation to invest in not only the artists who perform on its stage currently, but also developing artists who aspire to perform here. We’ll also provide education programs for young people and audiences, while embracing technology as a tool for promoting artists, reaching new audiences and enriching their musical experiences in our hall.”

Ron Sexsmith, Whitehorse and Sam Roberts are all relatively new acts who aspired to and succeeded in headlining the famed venue as their careers progressed; 76-year-old folk legend Gordon Lightfoot has played Massey 150 times.

Phase 1 is already underway and will run until 2018 for a cost of $32 million (CAD) and Phase 2 from 2019 to 2021 for more than $100 million. The total projected cost is $135 million, the Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall revealed.

The first phase includes an $8 million commitment from the government of Canada and the same figure from the province, $1 million each from the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) and TD Bank Group, and more than $1 million from individual donors. Undisclosed sums were also given by the American Express Foundation and Edwards Charitable Foundation.

The revitalization is made possible because of the 2012 transfer of 4,804 square feet of land to the south of Massey Hall by Toronto’s MOD Developments and Tricon Capital Group Inc., allowing the expansion and improvements.

Cutts, whose opening remarks addressed why the undertaking would take seven years, was followed by numerous speakers involved with the two-phase project, including Minister of Finance Hon. Joe Oliver and one artist with his own memory of performing on the Massey Hall stage, Rush singer/bassist Geddy Lee. The famed Toronto prog-rock trio recorded its first live album, All the World’s a Stage, at Massey Hall over three days in June of 1976.

“The first big show that I remember vividly was coming here to see a band called the Cream [Jack Bruce, Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker] back in the mid-60s,” recalled Lee of his youth. “I remember it clearly because none of my friends wanted to go with me and I was going anyway, so I bought a ticket and I sat right up there.” As for aspiring to play Massey himself with Rush, he says, “Of course all kids dream. Me and my bandmates used to dream of just working regularly, so the idea of playing Massey Hall was a dream beyond dreams. So when it finally came true it was quite something.”

Some speakers, like Hon. Michael Coteau, provincial minister of tourism, culture & sport, prefaced their formal remarks with a personal anecdote from their teen years, such as seeing LL Cool J at Massey Hall or Mayor John Tory seeing Jack Benny and later Carole King opening for James Taylor.

Built by architect Sidney R. Badgley for about $150,000, and financed by Hart Massey, the three-level concert theater opened in 1894 and originally seated 3,500 people; it currently seats 2,753. The revitalization is helmed by Order of Canada recipient Marianne McKenna of Kuwabarra Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects and Goldsmith Boreal & Company Ltd.

Phase 1 of the project will include modernization of back of house, the first-ever loading dock for the venue, and backstage artist space. Phase 2 will include refurbishment of the interior and exterior of Massey Hall, an expansion about the new foundation of two levels of enhanced, accessible patron amenities, which will include elevators, new washrooms, lobby, bar and hospitality/rental spaces.

Massey Hall will go dark for 18-24 months at some point after 2019, while construction takes place, and will be announced well in advance. “Until then, it will be business as usual at Massey Hall,” said Cutts.

Calling it a celebration of the launch of Phase 1, he added, “This would not have been possible without the generous support of government, corporate, foundation, and individual donors…It is significant that all three orders of government have been unified in their support of Phase 1 and by extension the entire revitalization project.

“The federal government recognizes that investing in Massey Hall’s future not only creates employment but will ensure that the hall continues to contribute to the lives of Canadians through arts, employment and cultural celebration for generations to come.”

Flight of the Conchords Taking Flight Again? Late 2015 Tour in the Works

The fourth most popular folk duo from New Zealand are plotting their return to the U.S.

Flight of the Conchords’ Jemaine Clement says he and Bret McKenzie “are planning on touring later on in the year in the States. It isn’t very solid yet, but we’ve been talking about it.”

As in years past, Clement says the Conchords will play new material at the shows. “I really don’t like the studio part of music,” he says. “I more enjoy playing live and letting others take care of the recording.”

Clement is at Sundance for People, Places, Things, Jim Strouse’s engaging romantic comedy in which Clement plays a cartoonist and teacher struggling with heartbreak and being a consistent father for his 5-year-old twin daughters. With the exception of a 2013 tour, Flight of the Conchords has been on the back burner since the end of the second season of their HBO show in 2009.

Since then, Clement has been active voicing animated films and making his co-directing/film-writing debut with last year’s What We Do in the Shadows. His writing/directing partner on that film, Taika Watiti, is working with him on an idea for television that may include music. “I consider my career as a whole a collection of hobbies,” he says. “I don’t have a career, just all these hobbies going on.”

Like the Conchords’ TV show, People, Places, Things is set in New York, but that’s where the parallels end for Clement, whose character Will has an artistic sophistication and nurturing qualities.

“The Conchords’ Jemaine is very unaware of his feelings, and Will is keenly aware of his,” says Clement. “At first, Jim [Strouse] talked about me using an American accent, and we tried it out and eventually decided it wasn’t important. He wanted the character to be an outsider anyway, so the accent might help that. Then having not performed that much [on film], I had to think about, ‘How do I actually talk that’s different from Flight of the Conchords?’ Right before filming, I thought, ‘How do I actually do it?'”

Even composer Mark Orton, whose breezy score harkens back to simpler times, was keenly aware of not sounding Conchords-esque. “I wanted the music to sound like his character — a guy whose pants were too short,” Orton said in a separate conversation. “I had to make sure I wasn’t rewriting ‘Sugalumps.'”

Over the course of their amazing career, RUSH has lived a lifetime together, providing an influential soundtrack to many of their fans’ lives. Some have been with them since the start, while others have discovered them along the way and delved into their incredible body of work. To quote Dave Grohl from their momentous induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, “RUSH built their following the right way. No hype, no bullshit, they did it from the ground up. Their legacy is incredible and their influence undeniable.”

RUSH’s vast catalogue includes such classics as 1974’s self-titled debut, 1976’s “2112”, 1981’s “Moving Pictures”, 1996’s “Test For Echo”, and 2002’s “Vapor Trails”. RUSH released their 20th studio album, “Clockwork Angels”, in 2012 via Anthem/Roadrunner. The critically acclaimed collection marked their first studio recording since 2007’s “Snakes & Arrows”, and debuted at #1 in Canada and #2 on The Billboard 200, matching the highest chart debut of the band’s career. Known for their energetic live shows, the most recent RUSH release was the “R40” collector’s box set including live footage spanning all four decades of the trio’s career, including over two hours of unreleased material and a rare performance of the seven-part version of “2112” packaged in an impressive 52-page hardcover book.

Their longevity has served a pop culture renaissance, with the band’s rare television appearance — their first in over 30 years — on Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report”, tributes on “South Park” and a memorable cameo in the film “I Love You, Man”. A live review from their most recent “Clockwork Angels” tour boasted “the power-trio interplay could put guys half their age in the burn ward,” while The Globe & Mail declared RUSH as “one of the few bands anywhere that just keeps getting better.” A career-chronicling Rolling Stone feature summed up the renowned rock trio’s continuing artistic vitality by observing, “It’s true that RUSH doesn’t mean today what it did in ’76 or even ’96. It may mean more.”

RUSH has been recognized with eight Juno Awards, seven Grammy nominations, including one for the acclaimed documentary “Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage” that also won the Audience Award at the Tribeca Film Festival. The band members were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall Of Fame in 1994, made Officers Of The Order Of Canada in 1996 and inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame in 2010. They have received a star on both Canada’s Walk Of Fame (1999) and Hollywood Walk Of Fame (2010). In 2012, RUSH were bestowed with the highest artistic honor in Canada when receiving the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award. To the elation of their fans, RUSH were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2013.

Stevie Wonder Adds More ‘Songs in the Key of Life’ Tour Dates

Stevie Wonder has added 11 more dates to his blockbuster Songs in the Key of Life tour, on which he’s been playing his legendary 1976 album in its entirety. The new leg will begin on St. Patrick’s Day in Denver take him to big cities in the Midwest and eastern part of the United States before wrapping in Brooklyn on April 12th.

The first leg of the tour – which Rolling Stone called “possibly 2014’s greatest testament to the limitless potential of American music itself” – crisscrossed the States last November and December. Wonder first attempted the feat of playing the diamond-selling double-album in its entirety in late 2013 at his annual House Full of Toys benefit concert. “Truly, I wanted to do this for years,” he said at the event. Prior to the show, he revealed to Rolling Stone that he had been planning on reviving the album live for at least eight or nine years.

“The album has just inspired me,” he said when asked how the album has changed for him over time. “When I listen to my music, I listen to really see if I still feel the same way. When I listen to Songs in the Key of Life or Talking Book or Innervisions or any of the things I’ve done in the past, I listen to measure how I feel and how I see the world…and it gives me a lot of optimism.”

Next month, Wonder’s music will be the subject of a tribute concert, Stevie Wonder: Songs in the Key of Life – An All-Star Grammy Salute, which will air on CBS. Taped two days after the Grammys, the program will feature the likes of Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Ed Sheeran, Willie Nelson, Usher and Janelle Monáe, among others who have yet to be announced, singing Wonder’s songs.

Some great artists are playing this year, but none that I need to go to Tennessee to see.

Bonnaroo 2015: Billy Joel, Mumford and Sons, Deadmau5 Lead Lineup

Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and multiplatinum icon Billy Joel will be headlining the 2015 edition of the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival.

The initial lineup for the 13th annual mega-fest — announced earlier this evening via an interactive social-media blitz — also includes Mumford and Sons, Deadmau5, Kendrick Lamar, Florence and the Machine, My Morning Jacket and Robert Plant with his latest band, the Sensational Space Shifters.

Notable inclusions include arena-R&B legends Earth, Wind and Fire; new-wave epic-crafters Tears for Fears, who are currently celebrating the 30th anniversary of their landmark Songs From the Big Chair; rising hip-hop star Dej Loaf in her first-announced summer festival appearance and extreme metal’s most famous band, Slayer. Other artists set to perform this year include Bassnectar, Alabama Shakes, Hozier, Spoon, Belle and Sebastian and Run the Jewels, among many others.

The bill also promises the return of the annual star-studded SuperJam as well as the Bluegrass SuperJam hosted by The Hangover actor and banjo enthusiast Ed Helms.

The full list of performers that Bonnaroo has listed so far is available on the fest’s website. Bonnaroo producers are promising more than 125 musical artists total and more than 20 comedians, so they will be announcing more in the coming months. The four-day extravaganza will play out on 12 stages.

The fest, held in Manchester, Tennessee on June 11 through the 14th, is expecting more than 80,000 attendees, which would take about five months of Billy Joel’s Madison Square Garden residency to comfortably let everyone hear “Piano Man.”
