Mock metal group Spinal Tap to reunite
NEW YORK (AP) ó Spinal Tap is back, and this time the band wants to help save the world from global warming.
The mock heavy metal group immortalized in the 1984 mockumentary, “This is Spinal Tap,” will reunite for a performance at Wembley Stadium in London as part of the Live Earth concerts scheduled worldwide for July 7.
The original members of Spinal Tap will be there: guitarist Nigel Tufnel (played by Christopher Guest), singer David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean) and bassist Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer). Rob Reiner, who both directed “This is Spinal Tap” and played the fake documentarian Marty DeBergi in the film, will also be in attendance.
A new 15-minute film directed by Reiner on the band’s reunion will also play at the opening night of the Tribeca Film Festival in New York on Wednesday. The slate for the opening gala, to be hosted by Al Gore, was previously announced, excepting the Reiner short.
The festival is to open with a showing of several global warming-themed short films produced by the SOS (Save Our Selves) campaign. SOS is also putting on the Live Earth concerts, to be held across seven continents.
Reiner spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday to explain the reunion of Spinal Tap ó a band always known more as a parody of rock `n roll excess than environmental awareness.
“They’re not that environmentally conscious, but they’ve heard of global warming,” said Reiner, whose other films include “When Harry Met Sally” and “Stand By Me.” “Nigel thought it was just because he was wearing too much clothing ó that if he just took his jacket off it would be cooler.”
Spinal Tap has reunited several times since the film, but hasn’t for a number of years. For the band ó whose last album was 1992’s “Break like the Wind” ó the occasion warranted a new single: “Warmer Than Hell.”
Reiner provided a sneak peak at the lyrics: “The devil went to Devon, it felt like the fourth degree/ He said, `Is it hot in here, or is it only me?'”
The director said the new short film explains what the band has been doing with their lives lately. Nigel has been raising miniature horses to race, but can’t find jockeys small enough to ride them; David is now a hip-hop producer who also runs a colonic clinic; and Derek is in rehab for addiction to the Internet.
Reiner, 60, has for over 20 years worked with the National Resources Defense Council, an environmental action organization. Though the Spinal Tap reunion will be a lot of laughs, he hopes the SOS short films program and the Live Earth concerts have a substantial effect.
“What I think is going to be nice about this whole effort is there will be marching orders for people,” said Reiner. “Not only from a personal standpoint of what individuals can do in their lives, but a macro perspective with respect to the public sector and government.”

John Fogerty firms up summer plans
John Fogerty has announced dates for a North American summer trek, with all but two of the shows taking place in Canadian venues.
The veteran rocker, who currently has no new product to promote, also announced on his website that he would be going into the recording studio this spring to begin work on a new album, tentatively scheduled for release later this fall.

Fogerty’s most recent release was last June’s concert DVD “The Long Road Home–In Concert.” The video was captured during Fogerty’s 2005 tour in support of his 2004 album, “Deja Vu All Over Again.”

‘Personal Issues’ Upend Fall Out Boy Tour
Fall Out Boy has postponed the start of its stint on the Honda Civic Tour due to undisclosed “personal issues.” The trek was to begin April 18 in Charlotte, N.C., but has now been pushed back to May 11 in Denver. The lone date that has been canceled is May 1 in Sacramento, Calif.; refunds are available at points of purchase.
“Unfortunately, because of some personal issues we had to delay the tour a few weeks,” Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz says in a statement. “We want to put on the best possible show we can and know that this extra couple of weeks will give us the time to put ourselves in the right place to put on the best show we can.”
The tour, which will also feature rapper Paul Wall and rock outfits Cobra Starship, +44 and The Academy Is…, will now conclude July 2 in Anaheim, Calif.
Wentz told Billboard.com in an earlier interview that in addition to playing the hits and pumping its latest Island album, “Infinity on High,” the quartet plans to play songs from its catalog that have never been performed live, as well as re-arranged versions of other tracks and covers. “It’ll be right back to Michael Jackson, probably,” he said of the latter. “I’d say expect Jackson 5 or ‘Beat It’ or something like that.”
“Infinity on High” is the No. 4 top-selling release of the year so far, according to Nielsen SoundScan, having shifted 695,000 units.

Fall Out Boy Ready To Rock On Honda Civic Tour
Pete Wentz says Fall Out Boy fans can expect “the biggest Fall Out Boy show they’ve ever seen” on the upcoming Honda Civic Tour, which begins April 18 in Charlotte, N.C. But, he adds, big is a relative term.
“A lot of bands right now are doing these really theatrical shows,” Wentz tells Billboard.com. “Our friends Panic! At The Disco did this almost circus on stage, and it was crazy. But that’s not what our band is. Our band’s a rock band, so we look to bands like what Guns N’ Roses used to do and what Metallica does and Foo Fighters and bands like that as far as what we’re gonna do with our show. It’s just gonna be a really, really, really big rock show.”
Wentz says that in addition to playing the hits and pumping its latest album, “Infinity on High,” the quartet plans to play songs from its catalog that have never been performed live, as well as re-arranged versions of other tracks and covers. “It’ll be right back to Michael Jackson, probably,” Wentz says of the latter. “I’d say expect Jackson 5 or ‘Beat It’ or something like that.”
Fall Out Boy chose the other bands for the Honda Civic Tour bill, and Wentz says there were specific reasons to include all of them. They share a label with The Academy Is… and Cobra Starship, while rapper Paul Wall is a personal favorite who Wentz acknowledges “some people are gonna love us for and some people are gonna hate us for.”
+44, meanwhile, is a chance to pay back blink-182 vets Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker for including Fall Out Boy on one of its tours. “And then,” Wentz adds, “I feel like, as a band, we’re really in our adolescence and we need someone who’s gone through that before to … show us the ropes and kind of just be around. I think Mark and Travis definitely represent that.”
After the 43-date Honda Civic Tour wraps June 10-11 in Chicago, Wentz says Fall Out Boy plans to play some European festivals in the summer and then “go some places we’ve never been before, like Dubai and South Africa.” The group also hopes to go to Uganda, where it works with the awareness group Invisible Children.

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill roll out 2007 itinerary
Superstar country couple Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, who last month announced plans to embark on another co-headlining tour this year, have unveiled the schedule for the run.
Dubbed the “Soul2Soul Tour 2007,” the trek launches in early June and is currently scheduled to hit arenas and amphitheaters in 34 cities throughout the US and Canada. Details are included below.
Tickets for the outing will hit the box office March 16, according to a press release. Members of each artist’s official fan club will have access to an exclusive ticket pre-sale that launches Monday (3/12); details are available Hill’s website.
McGraw and Hill’s 2006 “Soul2Soul II Tour” was the highest-grossing country outing in history, as well as the 12th highest-grossing tour of all time, according to concert-industry magazine Pollstar. The 73-concert, 55-city trek was also the fastest-selling tour for the first quarter of 2006, according to Ticketmaster.
“The crowds for every show on Soul2Soul II were out of control–they rocked,” McGraw and Hilly said in a joint statement. “To know that we’re able to do this again is a great feeling, but we’ll have more to live up to this time.”
The couple plans to add to the Soul2Soul 2007 setlist some hits that weren’t performed during the previous run, including McGraw’s “Live Like You Were Dying,” “Everywhere” and “Real Good Man”; Hill’s “Breathe,” “Cry,” “This Kiss” and “Stealing Kisses”; and the McGraw/Hill duet “It’s Your Love.”
Fans can also look forward to hearing “Last Dollar,” the leadoff single from McGraw’s forthcoming album, “Let It Go,” which hits stores March 27. The collection is his first new studio set since 2004’s “Live Like You Were Dying,” and follows last year’s “Reflected: Greatest Hits V. 2.”
Hill’s most recent album is 2005’s multi-platinum “Fireflies.”

Genesis to kick off tour in Toronto
TORONTO (CP) – British supergroup Genesis will kick off their North American reunion tour in Toronto this September.
The “Turn it on Again” tour – named for one of the band’s prog-rock hits – lands in the city on Sept. 7 and in Montreal on Sept. 14 following a stint in Europe. Front man Phil Collins told a New York news conference that the 13-city run will include a sampling of the band’s best-loved hits, but no solo material.
Ticket for the Montreal show go on sale Saturday, while tickets for the Toronto show go on sale Monday.
Genesis was one of the biggest bands of the 1970s and ’80s, with hits such as “Follow You, Follow Me,” “That’s All” and “Invisible Touch.”
Collins says Peter Gabriel, the band’s original singer, was too busy with a solo project to join the reunion, the band’s first North American tour in 15 years.
Collins, who quit the band to go on a lucrative solo career in 1996, said Wednesday that he’s been encouraged to hear that many younger fans have emerged since the group left the limelight.
“There’s a lot of people that I’ve met… people that kind of said (that a tour is) great, because I was too young to see you the first time,” said Collins, 56, joined at the announcement by bandmates Mike Rutherford, 56, and Tony Banks, 56.
“They’ve heard it through their families – moms and dads played it in the house or the kids grow up with it – but they never saw us.”
Collins insisted the reunion was not motivated by money, noting that if it was they’d do a far greater number of shows.
“We’re still great friends, you know, and we’ve been great friends since I left the band…. and we’ve talked about it all the time every time we’ve met to do something and now is as good a time as (any).”
Genesis was founded in the mid-1960s by Rutherford, Banks, Anthony Phillips and singer Gabriel, who left the group in 1975 and was replaced on vocals by drummer Collins.
Aerosmith to rock Prince Edward Island: report
Rock veterans Aerosmith will be hosting Prince Edward Island’s biggest concert ever according to a local newspaper.
The Charlottetown Guardian says it has confirmed the rock band will play the Charlottetown Driving Park Entertainment Centre on July 21.
The all-day event, part of Aerosmith’s Ambassadors of Rock tour, will feature local performers such as Two Hours Traffic, In-Flight Safety and Nathan Wiley.
The tour’s only other Canadian date is July 19 in Sarnia, Ont.
About 30,000 fans are expected to turn up, far more than the 18,000 who attended the Black Eyed Peas concert last year at the same venue.
Concert organizer David Carver is the person behind inviting Aerosmith to the Island. However, Carver ran into problems after last September’s Black Eyed Peas event.
In early February, Deputy Mayor Stu MacFadyen said the city wouldn’t allow Carver to host another concert until he paid a $17,000 bill for security. MacFadyen did say he was confident the debt would be settled soon.
John Gaudet of the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce, predicts the event will bring huge economic rewards to the region but also wonders if it might draw visitors away from other events during the summer.
“Does one large event take away from the other?” Gaudet asked in the newspaper. “It’s something we’ll be discussing.”
Aerosmith, which has sold 100 million albums worldwide, begins its tour April 15 in Buenos Aires. The band’s other stops include Dubai, Frankfurt, Paris, London and Moscow.
And we are all glad he did!!
Reunion surprise for Sting
LOS ANGELES — Sting says his decision to rejoin bandmates Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland in ’80s British New Wave band the Police for a 30th anniversary tour this year surprised him as much as everybody else.
“You know, if you’d asked me the day I made the decision, I would have said, ‘You’re out of your mind,’ ” the Police singer-bassist, 55, told about 200 assembled media and contest winners packed yesterday morning into the Whiskey A Go Go, the small, legendary Sunset Strip club.
“I woke up one morning, it was like three months ago, and this light bulb went off in my head — “I’m going to call Andy and Stewart and tell them that we should do a tour.” I thought, ‘Well, it’ll surprise them, it’ll surprise the world, and it’s surprising me too.’ ”
As Sun Media exclusively reported yesterday, the Police’s 30th anniversary reunion tour of mostly arenas and stadiums will launch in North America on May 28 in Vancouver and visit Toronto on July 22 and Montreal on July 25. Tickets in all three cities go on sale this Saturday at 10 a.m.
Edmonton wasn’t among the tour stops announced yesterday, but the date Sun Media reported yesterday — June 2 — is pencilled in and is expected to be confirmed in a few weeks.
The most recent time the Police toured together was in 1984, but rumours of a pending reunion began circulating after they announced they would open the Grammy Awards telecast this past Sunday night.
Sting acknowledged yesterday that he has been the lone holdout over the years.
“What’s happening is very interesting, because it’s very healing,” Sting said. “It’s a part of my life that I’ve sort of run away from for 25 years. So to come back and be with the band and develop these relationships again, we’re wiser than we used to be. We still fight, argue about the music, but we have ways of navigating now that we didn’t have before. We’re wiser and a bit more mellow.”
Added Copeland, 54, “We’ve never hated each other. We shouted and screamed, as Sting says, about the music. We fought tooth-and-nail over the music, but as human beings we always liked each other.”
“Now we do yoga and eat granola,” added Summers, 64. “We love everybody.”
Copeland continued more seriously. “I just want to play my dreams and follow Sting’s lead and play the songs with Andy.”
“You’ve changed, Stewart,” Sting said.
“He hasn’t,” Summers lobbed back. “We refer to Sting as our dear leader … on a good day.”
Yesterday, the trio — which had rehearsed in Vancouver for the past couple of weeks — roughly made their way through four of their songs: Message In A Bottle, When World Is Running Down, I Can’t Stand Losing You and Roxanne. How rough? Sting had a teleprompter to one side, and Copeland kept yelling out chords.
Then they answered only about a half-dozen questions from the assembled media.
The band Fiction Plane — led by Sting’s son, Joe Sumner — will open for the Police in North America. A portion of the proceeds from the tour will go toward WaterAid.
Is a new Police album part of the reunion plan? The trio refused to seriously answer that question.
Sting did say the band will play Police songs that they’ve never before performed live, and production-wise, “it’s going to be three guys on stage, that’s all. Simple but spectacular.”
Tickets for the Toronto show — priced $225, $95 and $59.50 — go on sale Saturday at TicketMaster, the Air Canada Centre box office (no first-day sales), by phone at (416) 870-8000, or online at ticketmaster.ca or livenation.com. There is a limit of four tickets per person.
For ticket price and ordering information for the Montreal and Vancouver shows, go to livenation.com or thepolicetour.com.
