Great Big Sea Bassist Quits
East Coast Celtic pop act Great Big Sea has gotten a little smaller.
A news release on the Newfoundland group’s web site reports that bassist Darrell Power has decided to leave.
“I have chosen to pursue interests, musical and otherwise, off the road and closer to home for the foreseeable future,” said Power, who added that the decision was amicable.
“Darrell has been a great driving force in the band and will be missed,” said frontman Alan Doyle.
The band’s remaining members, Bob Hallett, Sean McCann, and Doyle will continue to record and a replacement bassist will be hired for performances.
Great Big Sea was formed in 1991, and released their self-titled first album in 1992. Their fifth and latest release, “Sea of No Cares,” debuted at No. 1 in Canada.
The band recently returned from a 40-date Canadian tour, and is currently up for seven East Coast Music Awards, including nominations for Entertainer of the Year, Album of the Year, and Group of the Year.
