‘Arrested Development’ announces new show, movie

NEW YORK (AP) — The Bluth family’s frozen banana stand may be back in business!!

At an “Arrested Development” reunion Sunday at the New York Festival, the creators and cast announced plans for a new TV show that spins off the short-lived but critically acclaimed TV show, which went off the air in 2006 after just three seasons. They also discussed more concrete plans for a much-awaited movie.

Creator Mitchell Hurwitz said the spinoff will feature nine or ten episodes focusing on each character and leading up to the movie. The first scene of the movie will be all the characters reunited.

The Fox show, which suffered low ratings despite its rabid fan base, starred Jason Bateman, Michael Cera and Portia de Rossi. They played members of a dysfunctional family who ran a collapsing real estate development company and frozen banana stand.

Shooting for the TV show is tentatively set to begin next summer.

The movie doesn’t have a release date, Hurwitz said, adding that the creative aspects have been largely worked out, but the business side is still being negotiated.

“We’re all game,” he said. “We’ve hated being coy, but we’ve been trying to put together this ambitious idea.”

Interesting choices, all around!!

‘The Office’: Josh Groban joins Andy’s family too
A day after “The Office” gave Andy Bernard parents, the show is giving him a little brother.
Grammy-winning singer Josh Groban will guest-star as Andy’s (Ed Helms) younger brother on an episode this fall, Deadline reports. Presumably that episode will be the same one that features Stephen Collins and Dee Wallace as his parents.
We’re also guessing that there might be a fair amount of sibling rivalry. Groban is playing Walter Jr., which “Office” aficionados will recall was originally Andy’s name, until his parents decided his younger brother was more deserving of it.
It probably wouldn’t be out of the question to expect a Bernard brothers musical duet/competition either, one which we suspect would not go in Andy’s favor.
Although we wonder why the Bernard family might make its way from Connecticut to Scranton — could it be to celebrate their son’s promotion to branch manager? Or perhaps their false belief that Andy was promoted? We’re just spitballing here.
“The Office” premieres Thursday, Sept. 22 on NBC.

Leno Strikes Again!!

TBS canceling comic George Lopez’s talk show
LOS ANGELES (AP) — George Lopez, who surrendered his TBS time slot to Conan O’Brien and then saw ratings for “Lopez Tonight” slide, got a cancelation notice Wednesday. Lopez’s Thursday show at midnight will be the final one, the cable network said in a statement.
“TBS has reached the difficult decision not to order a third season of ‘Lopez Tonight,'” the network said, adding that it was proud to have worked with the “immensely talented comedian and entertainer.”
TBS declined further comment. The decision was based not only on ratings but also the cost of the show, according to a person familiar with the production, who spoke on condition of anonymity because TBS hadn’t authorized public comment.
A call to Lopez’s representatives was not immediately returned.
The comic gave up his 11 p.m. ET time slot to make room for O’Brien, who joined TBS after leaving NBC’s “Tonight” over a time-slot dispute that ended up reinstating Jay Leno as “Tonight” host.
The plan for TBS was to have a one-two punch of late-night shows that would particularly appeal to young viewers, but the results have been unimpressive and the cancelation unsurprising, said media analyst Brad Adgate of Horizon Media.
“The only positive was a young median age” of about 32, Adgate said, which is part of the younger adult audience favored by advertisers.
Lopez was among the rare minority entertainers to get a shot at a late-night show, with Arsenio Hall and Wanda Sykes also in the group. Late-night hosts are uniformly white and male, including O’Brien, Leno, David Letterman, Craig Ferguson, Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel.
Neither Lopez nor O’Brien has been covered in ratings glory since TBS made its bold move to snare the former broadcast network star.
Lopez’s total viewership dropped 40 percent in its second year, from an average of 910,000 nightly viewers at 11 p.m. ET to 543,000 at midnight. In August, the audience has dropped to 391,000.
“Conan” has been drawing slightly more than 1 million viewers for the season, just 13 percent higher than Lopez did in his first year, Adgate said, citing Nielsen Co. figures.
For the first part of August, “Conan” is averaging 709,000 nightly viewers. During its debut month, November 2010, O’Brien’s show had about 2 million nightly viewers.
In comparison, “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” is getting nearly 1.3 million viewers for Comedy Central at 11 p.m. ET, with “The Colbert Show” following it up at 11:30 ET with an average 982,000 viewers.

He seems like an odd choice, but I don’t watch that show anymore so what do I care?!?!

Ted Danson will lead ‘CSI: Crime Scene Investigation’ team
One month after Laurence Fishburne’s exit, “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” has found an Emmy-winning replacement to lead the team.
CBS confirmed on Tuesday (July 12) night that Ted Danson has signed on as a series regular for the upcoming 12th season of “CSI,” joining the show for its shift from Thursday to Wednesday nights.

Danson will play a new CSI Supervisor who takes on the Las Vegas grave shift after running the crime lab in Portland. CBS says “He comes to the team as they are still grappling with the professional and personal fallout from last season’s take-down of serial killer, Nate Haskell.”

It was announced last month that Fishburne was leaving “CSI” after two-and-a-half seasons to concentrate on his feature career.

As one would expect, the “CSI” creative team is pleased with their new hire.

“You can create a new character on the page, but until the perfect actor comes along and breathes life into it, it’s just words,” states executive producer Carol Mendelsohn.
“We’re very excited Ted Danson came along.”

Adds executive producer Don McGill, “From the moment we all started talking about the role, it was clear he couldn’t be more perfect. Intelligence, wit, warmth, depth of character and emotion, he brings it all.  And now he’ll have to bring latex gloves, too.”

Danson won a pair of Emmys for his long run on “Cheers” and most recently earned three Emmy nods for a dramatic turn on FX’s “Damages.” Frequently seen playing himself on HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” Danson has also had a supporting role on the HBO comedy “Bored to Death,” a role he’d be able to continue, according to TVGuide.com.

The new character will debut on the Wednesday, September 21 season premiere of “CSI.”

Sunday night, baby!!! SUNDAY NIGHT!!

Larry David back for more laughs
Larry David cancels a Girl Scout cookie order from the daughter of a beleaguered sports owner.
That one sentence alone does a good job selling the eighth-season premiere of Curb Your Enthusiasm, which airs Sunday on HBO Canada.
Curb Your Enthusiasm, of course, is a fictional account of the life of the quirky and prickly Larry David, co-creator of Seinfeld. David plays a version of himself in Curb, which tends to be packed with celebrity guest stars who also often play versions of themselves.
Guest stars peppered through the eighth season include Ricky Gervais, Michael J. Fox, Jonathan Ames, Rebecca Creskoff, Gary Cole, Ana Gasteyer, Michael Gross, Harry Hamlin, Larry Miller, Robert Smigel, Aida Turturro, Jo Anne Worley, Mookie Wilson and Bill Buckner.
Those last two people – Wilson and Buckner – are former Major League Baseball players who show up in the middle episodes of the eighth season, when the setting for Curb shifts from Los Angeles to New York.
