Film Star Driver Signs With NBC For TV Series
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Oscar-nominated British actress Minnie Driver is going to have a U.S. TV series built around her next year — but nobody knows if it will be a comedy or drama.
NBC Entertainment President Jeff Zucker said Thursday that Driver, 32, will appear in a series for the 2003-2004 season, but it was not decided whether it will be a comedy or a drama.
Driver was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for 1997’s “Good Will Hunting” and also appeared in films including “Grosse Point Blank” and “Circle of Friends.” She has also done voice work in a number of animated films, among them “Tarzan,” “South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut” and “Princess Mononoke.”
A network spokesman said the deal was just for a show for Driver and did not extend into production or development of other series beyond her own. He also said the two sides do not have a firm concept for a series as yet.

Jerry Does Dave
The biggest trick-or-treat this Halloween is likely to be Jerry Seinfeld performing new stand-up material on David Letterman’s “Late Show.”
Seinfeld is booked to appear on Oct. 31, and perform for the first time on TV in more than a year.
That is the first night of the November sweeps, the crucial ratings period that networks use to set ad rates.
Jerry’s last TV performance was also on Letterman in March 2001, when he performed about five minutes of new material.
Seinfeld’s spokeswoman confirmed that the comedian is booked on Letterman’s show but cautioned that the date could change. He’s also scheduled to appear on “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno on Oct. 10, but is not expected to perform.
Both appearances are part of Seinfeld’s return to stand-up and tied to his new movie, “Comedian,” a warts-and-all documentary that chronicles his return to the stage.
The film opens next month.
In his search for new material, the comic who made millions on a sitcom about nothing, has been seen roaming his home turf on the Upper West Side.

CBS Sends Invitation for ‘Greek Wedding’
HOLLYWOOD (Variety) – CBS has finally sent an RSVP to “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” picking up a small-screen version of the smash indie film for midseason.
The network has officially ordered seven episodes of the half-hour comedy; that number could increase, however, as the series producers are in negotiations with CBS to bump the pickup to 13.
Just like the feature, the TV “Greek Wedding” will star Nia Vardalos as a woman whose life revolves around a traditional Greek family. The series will pick up as Vardalos’ character starts dating a non-Greek man behind her parents’ back.
Vardalos, who originated and starred in the one-woman stage show, which Tom Hanks’ Playtone Prods. banner turned into the feature picture, wrote the pilot with Marsh McCall (“Just Shoot Me”). McCall will executive produce, along with Vardalos’ manager Brad Gray and Rita Wilson, Hanks’ wife; Vardalos will serve as co-executive producer.
Wilson’s involvement has become the stuff of legends: the actress fell in love with the play and was instrumental in bringing her husband on board. The film, which cost about $5 million to make, has now grossed more than $110 million at the North American box office. It is poised to pass the $140 million haul of “The Blair Witch Project” to become the biggest-grossing indie film of all time.
Gray said that he was originally interested in the TV project because “it seemed like a wonderful CBS comedy. It seemed like it would complement their schedule very well. It has great warmth and is just very funny.”
Following the picture’s success, Gray is even more optimistic about the show’s chances.
“It’s become so popular around the country, it feels like there’s even more potential and an audience that’s been built around it,” he said.
CBS initially gave the project a hefty pilot commitment last October, and although the network didn’t pick up “Greek Wedding” for fall, it ordered an additional three scripts in late May.
Besides Vardalos, Michael Constantine and Lainie Kazan, who played Vardalos’ parents in the picture, are expected to reprise their characters in the series. Louis Mandylor is also likely to return as brother Nick. John Corbett, who played Vardalos’ fiance, is starring in FX’s upcoming series “Lucky.”

Courtney Love Doing 24-Hour MTV2 Gig
NEW YORK (AP) – You’ve really gotta love Courtney Love if you tune into MTV2 this weekend.
For 24 straight hours, the rock diva will be in control of the music network. She’ll play the videos she likes, invite her friends over for an on-camera jab fest and do whatever else she pleases, the network said Monday.
“MTV2 has always been home to a variety of artists,” said David Cohn, MTV2 general manager. “So much so, we wanted to let them move in, and we are thrilled to give Courtney the first set of keys.”
This is the first time the network has relinquished control to an artist for a day, representatives said.
Love won’t even need to stay awake the entire 24 hours; an MTV spokesman says when she sleeps, the network will probably show snippets of her dozing.
The former lead singer of Hole will take over the MTV studios in Times Square for “24 Hours of Love” at 8 p.m. (EDT) Saturday.
Love, the widow of Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, has also appeared in the films “200 Cigarettes” and “The People vs. Larry Flynt.”
