Elmo and friends to help military families
WASHINGTON – You know the deal: Your kid asks a question on a touchy subject. You squirm and dodge the issue.
With a little help from Elmo, Sesame Street is urging parents to level with their little ones ó especially those in military families trying to deal with Mom or Dad’s lengthy deployment overseas.
“Our goal is to really get military families with young children … to talk about the different stages of deployment with their children, not only talk about it but prepare them for it,” said Jeanette Betancourt, vice president of content design at Sesame Workshop, which produces Sesame Street.
Sesame Workshop has produced a DVD, in both English and Spanish, that will be distributed free to military families next month. CEO Gary Knell was to announce details Friday in Houston, joined by officials of Wal-Mart, which has committed $1.5 million to the project.
Karla Sketch, the family readiness coordinator at Fort Campbell, an Army base on the Kentucky-Tennessee line, says parents often request coloring books, pamphlets or any materials that will help them discuss a soldier’s absence on a kid’s level.
Many parents, she said, are afraid of saying the wrong thing and frightening their children. “Are they going to tell their kids too much? Are they going to tell them enough? Some parents are new to the military. They don’t even understand it themselves,” Sketch said.
The DVD shows Elmo and his parents preparing for Elmo’s dad to be deployed, though it doesn’t say where he’s going.
The characters discuss their feelings, exchange keepsakes and review the reasons why Elmo can’t go, too. They promise to think about one another often, and keep up their regular practice of saying goodnight to the moon.
“Elmo, you know, no matter where I am, I’ll still be able to see the moon, just like you,” his dad says.
The DVD also addresses the mixed feelings that sometimes come unexpectedly with reunions. Elmo describes feeling “excited in a funny way” on reunion day. He goes on to say his tummy is doing flip-flops.
Sketch says that kind of dialogue is critical and often overlooked.
“A lot of times, after a year, you have to get to know that person again. Reunion is a process you have to get through,” she said. “It’s going to be great the first day, but it is a process, and it’s not just going to be back to business as usual as soon as that soldier comes home.”
Some half a million children of active duty personnel are newborn to 5 years old, said Leslye Arsht, deputy undersecretary of defense for military community and family policy.
Arsht said Sesame Street accurately and sensitively depicts what their lives are like by using show characters like Elmo, Telly and Rosita interspersed with interviews with real-life families throughout the DVD.
Joanna Lopez and her family were among those featured in the interviews. Her husband, Ernesto, is an infantryman based at Fort Bragg in North Carolina who has been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. Lopez, who has a 9-year-old and 5-year-old and is expecting her third child, predicted the DVD would be helpful to families like hers.
“Some parents don’t know how to deal with children when there is a deployment,” she said. “Other kids in school will say, ‘My daddy is away killing bad guys.’ This prepares the mom or dad to prepare the kids with better things to say.”
Moses Rogers, a Navy reservist and father of two, also near Fort Bragg, was another participant in the program. He said being part of the DVD project made him think about deployments in a new light.
“I think the lesson that I got personally was, separating from your family is really hard, but if you communicate that is good,” he said.
If he were to offer advice to other families now, Rogers said that he would say, “Talk to your children. Let them know what’s going on. Let them know that you’re going somewhere to help somebody.”

Nostalgic Sesame Street DVD set coming in October
For the first time ever, Sesame Workshop is planning to release Classic Sesame Street on DVD. Sesame Workshop has not yet announced if the set will contain complete episodes or skit compilations.
In September, Sesame Workshop stated that they were considering the possibility of releasing “classic” Sesame Street material on DVD, but not to expect anything anytime soon. This is due to the necessary development time, many legalities and several other organizational issues that would need to be addressed first.
There is now light at the end of the tunnel. Recently we received the following response from Sesame Workshop on the issue:
We are planning to release a “Sesame Street Nostalgia Box Set”, however this is something that will not happen until October ’06.
In the meantime, we released a boxed set of The Electric Company in February ’06, and there are plans for a second volume of The Electric Company as well.
So, now it is official. The first DVD box set of “classic” Sesame Street material should be released (if all goes as planned) in October 2006.
There are no further details on the set available at this time, but we’ll be sure to keep you all updated as more information is revealed on this exciting upcoming release.
Hmmm…..can I get there before it ends?
Original Muppets come home to Washington
The Smithsonian recognizes Jim Hensonís Legacy with inclusion of the original Muppets from “Sam and Friends” and “The Muppet Show”
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Jim Hensonís iconic Muppets and Kermit the Frog, the Smithsonianís National Museum of American History and its Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation present ìMuppets and Mechanisms: Jim Hensonís Legacy,î opening May 19. Two special displays will feature Hensonís earliest Muppet workóon view for the first time at the museumóas well as his later work in animatronics.
ìJim Henson embodied the innovation and ingenuity that is inherent in American culture,î said Brent D. Glass, director of the museum. ìBeyond the entertainment value Hensonís creations provided, his work helped educate and inform his audiences, an influence that continues today.î
In 1955, Hensonís ìSam and Friendsî debuted on local D.C. station WRC-TV, which introduced the American audience to Muppets and launched what would become a global phenomenon. ìSam and Friendsî featured a number of unique, zany characters from the titular Sam to the first Kermit, a lizard-like creature made from a green felt coat discarded by Hensonís mother. Ten of the characters from ìSam and Friends,î including Hensonís oldest surviving creation Pierre, will be on display at the museum, adjacent to the ìAmerican Popular Cultureî displays on the third floor.
Also on view will be a number of characters from ìThe Muppet Showî and other Muppet specials and movies that were originally voiced by Henson himself, including a Kermit the Frog from 1969, Rowlf the Dog, the Swedish Chef, Dr. Teeth and the Banjo Player from the Country Trio, which is actually a self-portrait of Henson.
Jim Hensonís contribution to puppeteering and entertainment extends beyond the characters themselves to technology as Henson and his ìCreature Shopsî pioneered uses of animatronics, or remote-controlled Muppets. This animatronic technology was a prominent component of a number of Henson projects, including the 1982 film ìThe Dark Crystal.î On view in cases outside the Lemelson Center on the museumís first floor will be characters from ìThe Dark Crystal,î including the filmís villain Skeksis, as well as examples of animatronic technology.
Jim Henson came up with the word Muppet in the mid-1950s. Seemingly a combination of puppet and marionette, Henson insisted that he chose the term simply because he liked the way it sounded. Central to the design of a Muppet is the way its face is constructed, creating a pattern with the eyes, nose and mouth called ìthe magic triangle.î This establishes a point of focus essential in bringing a puppet to life in the eye of a TV or movie camera.
The National Museum of American History collects, preserves and displays American heritage through exhibitions and public programs about social, political, cultural, scientific and military history. Documenting the American experience from colonial times to the present, the museum looks at growth and change in the United States. The museum, located at 14th Street and Constitution Avenue N.W., is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. during the summer beginning May 26 and continuing through Sept. 4. The museum will close for major renovations beginning Sept. 5. Admission is free. For more information, visit the museumís Web site at or call (202) 633-1000, (202) 357-1729 (TTY).

Muppet Show Season 2 DVD planned for release later this year
Just over six months ago, the first season of The Muppet Show was released in a 4-disc special edition DVD box set, and ever since fans have been craving more. Disney has stated that they plan on releasing “The Muppet Show: Season 2” on DVD and the next season is expected sometime this year.
The sales of the season one were outstanding, and Disney can’t wait to release more subsequent sets. The first season gained great critical acclaim, won several DVD awards, and was on the top of DVD best-sellers list for months.
Word from many retailers was that that “The Muppet Show: Season 2” was originally slated for released in February 2006 (just six-months after the first season). However that February release was put on hold due to several production delays and hold-ups. The set’s production is still underway, but the definitive release is still somewhat up in the air. The DVD was bumped and is currently lined up for a hopeful “summer 2006” release (however that may end up changing as well).
There were numerous delays with this particular title, however Disney has assured that these delays were not based upon the past sets performance, which Disney cited as “terrific”, nor is it due to a lack of company support. The production of this set is simply taking longer than originally expected – due to the enormous amount of legal clearances needed, and the time needed on episode restoration and supplemental features. Disney knows the demand for this product is high, and wants to deliver a quality product that won’t disappoint.
Disney is currently shooting for a summer release. Buena Vista Home Entertainment is not able to give a final list of any features of specifications ñ those arenít finalized yet. Disney is anticipating the release of all five seasons of The Muppet Show (and there are rumors of a complete Muppets Tonight set to follow the fifth season’s release).
“The Muppet Show Season 2” DVD set is simply requiring more than most of Buena Vista’s TV shows on DVDs. It is coming, but rather than rush the release and cut corners, Disney wants to keep the quality of these highly-anticipated sets up to the fans’ desires and expectations.
