Two Words – EVAN ALMIGHTY

‘Bridesmaids’ minus Kristen Wiig? Say it ain’t so!

“Bridesmaids” was an overwhelming success in an underwhelming year for box office revenue. The film, written by star Kristen Wiig and her writing partner Annie Mumulo was shot for a mere $32 million dollars. Worldwide, the film grossed $288 million, has been nominated for scads of awards and may even walk away with an Oscar! Wiig is proving to be a success on the big screen as well as the small one.

Alas, according to THR, Wiig won’t be back for a sequel to the film, though Universal may be going forward with it anyway. A “Bridesmaids 2” without it’s star? Wiig tells the site, “We’re not working on that. Annie and I aren’t planning a sequel. We are writing something else.” Well, sometimes it’s best not to mess with a good thing, but would you watch a sequel without their writing and Wiig’s performance?

A Universal rep tells the site, “We are over the moon with the success of “Bridesmaids,” and if we do a sequel we want to get it right. We are talking to filmmakers now about concepts, and if the right one emerges, we’ll move forward.” Producer Judd Apatow tells the site in a statement, “The key is we have to come up with an idea that is as good or better than the first one. We don’t want to do it unless it can be great. I don’t think anyone has had the brain space to think about it yet. Hopefully that can begin this year.”

Sources also point to breakout star Melissa McCarthy to be the driving force if the sequel does go forward.
