DVD Sales Surpass VHS In 2002
It may seem strange to early adopters of the DVD that the format only five years ago we had to beg stores to carry, has now surpassed VHS in total market sales.
Despite four times the lifespan and nearly 100% market penetration, VHS sales were unable to compete with DVD sales in 2002 according to VSDA reports. 2002 saw $8 billion in sales from DVD, roughly 65 percent of the $12.4 generated from all video sales. The rental market remains the domain of VHS with DVD only accounting for 35 percent of the market, but this is more than double the rentals from 2001.
