CD REVIEW- ELVIS COSTELLO- WHEN I WAS CRUEL
After a series of eclectic releases and discs that only a die hard fan would love, a category I don’t belong in, Elvis Costello has gone back to what he does best. Making loud, sometimes angry, but always brilliant, music. In fact, “When I Was Cruel” is Elvis’ first loud CD since 1994!
After the first listen I thought “hmm…some good songs and some okay songs.” Then the second listen…”WOW!”. Elvis still has it!
There is a super-cool slow song (not sure if it qualifies as a ballad) called “Tart” that is both sweet and “tart” at the same time. “Tear Your Head Off” is the best rock song I’ve heard in awhile. Perhaps even since 1994.
The best thing about the disc is that there is so much diversity. Every song on “When I Was Cruel” is different and interesting in it’s own right.
My favourite track is “45” but once you get this disc, you’ll have a few new favourites of your own.
