Phew!! At this point ANYONE but LL Cool J again!!

James Corden to Host Grammy Awards

James Corden will host the 59th Annual Grammy Awards.

The star of “The Late Late Show” on CBS, which broadcasts the yearly music-awards show, Corden will take over Grammy-hosting duties from hip-hop artist and “NCIS: Los Angeles” star LL Cool J, who departs after a five-year run. Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke” segment on “The Late Late Show” has featured some of music’s biggest stars, including Adele, Stevie Wonder, Lady Gaga, Sir Elton John and Justin Bieber.

“Thanks to ‘Carpool Karaoke,’ we’ve all been on some incredible rides with James, and The Recording Academy couldn’t be more excited to welcome his passion and enthusiasm for music, both as an entertainer and a fan, to the Grammy stage on February 12,” said Recording Academy President and CEO Neil Portnow. “He’s got big shoes to fill after the magnificent run we had with LL Cool J, but James Corden is a commanding, dynamic showman who, we believe, is perfect to host the Grammy Awards.”

Corden added, “I am truly honored to be hosting The Grammys next year. It’s the biggest, most prestigious award show in music and I feel incredibly lucky to be part of such an incredible night.”

Corden earned stellar reviews for his work hosting the Tony Awards on CBS in June. His “Late Late Show,” which he joined as host in 2015, earned an Emmy Award in September for outstanding interactive program. “Carpool Karaoke,” which features Corden side by side with well-known artists, singing hit songs while driving, has been a record-breaking segment on YouTube, garnering nearly 2 billion views and boosting the show’s YouTube channel to more than 8 million subscribers. Apple in July bought a spinoff series based on the segment to distribute through its Apple Music platform.

“James Corden’s remarkable range of talents makes him a star on any screen and every stage,” said Jack Sussman, executive vice president, specials, music and live events, CBS Entertainment. “We see it every night on CBS, every day on YouTube and audiences are still talking about his acclaimed performance hosting the Tony’s last June. We look forward to bringing James’ exceptional showmanship, infectious energy and his undeniable kinship with music to the Grammy stage. At the same time, everyone involved with the Grammys tips their hats with gratitude and respect to LL Cool J for an outstanding five years as host. LL was a dynamic host who guided our broadcast to great success with charisma, gravitas and poignancy when the moment called for it. His contributions — both on-air and behind-the-scenes as our valued collaborator — will be long remembered and always appreciated.”

Grammys executive producer Ken Ehrlich added, “James Corden is a captivating host, and I have no doubt that his musical background, personal charm and comedic instincts will resonate with our audience. For the past five years, we’ve been fortunate to have had LL Cool J host our show, and I trust that James will bring the same professionalism and charisma to Music’s Biggest Night.”

The Grammys are set to be broadcast live from Staples Center in Los Angeles Sunday, Feb. 12, at 8 p.m. ET, 5 p.m. PT. The telecast is being produced by AEG Ehrlich Ventures for the Recording Academy, with Ehrlich serving as executive producer, Louis J. Horvitz as director, and Ben Winston as a producer. David Wild is serving as a writer with Ehrlich.

Awesome casting news!!

‘Game of Thrones’ star Emilia Clarke tapped for Han Solo Star Wars spinoff

Emilia Clarke has landed a role in the new Han Solo movie.

The Game of Thrones actress has been cast in the as-yet-untitled standalone project, according to the official Star Wars website.

Emilia, who plays the fierce mother of dragons Daenerys Targaryen in the HBO show, was revealed as the latest star to join the “dynamic cast” on Friday.

“(Her) role will round out a cast of characters that Han and Chewie will encounter on their adventures,” the post on the Star Wars site read.

The 30-year-old Brit will star alongside Alden Ehrenreich, who is playing titular character Solo, and Donald Glover, who was recently cast as Lando Calrissian.

Creed star Tessa Thompson, actress and singer Zoe Kravitz, Naomi Scott and Adria Arjona have all been in the running for a part in the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. However, it’s unknown if Emilia has been cast in the female lead role they tested for.

The film is number two of three planned Star Wars prequel anthology films which will be directed by The LEGO Movie duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller – and will show Harrison Ford’s legendary character in his formative years.

Rogue One, the first Star Wars prequel, is released in cinemas next month. It follows a team of rebels who plot to steal plans that go on to create the Death Star.

The Han Solo movie is slated for release in 2018.

I Bet I Think That Song Is About Him

Warren Beatty explains ‘You’re So Vain’ (Sort Of)

Everybody assumed Warren Beatty was at least one of the preening peacocks whom singer Carly Simon skewered in “You’re So Vain,” her 1972 pop hit.

She once dated Beatty, who believed the chorus zinger, “You’re so vain, you probably think this song is about you,” was indeed aimed at him — although he was never inclined to get into specifics about it.

Simon kept mum about her target(s), claiming the “you” in the song referred to men in general. She reversed herself last year when she released her autobiography, Boys in the Trees, admitting that Beatty was referenced in part of the song. She also said that he’d broken her heart.

Asked about this during a Toronto Star interview, Beatty gave a typically complicated answer as he implied that Simon suffers from false memory syndrome. Could we vainly hope this is his definitive response to “You’re So Vain,” Carly Simon and Boys in the Trees?

Take a deep breath and let Beatty explain in his own way:

“All I can tell you is that invented memory is a huge subject now. And I don’t want to be unkind, I think Carly Simon is a very intelligent woman, who was extremely helpful when I was deeply involved in the McGovern campaign, and she was terribly helpful with raising money through the entertainment industry, which we did at that time in an unprecedented way.

“Let me just say that from what I have read that she wrote, and I didn’t read the book, I don’t read these books, there have been close to 15 books written about me, and I will read maybe 10 pages and see how inaccurate they are, and then I think, ‘Well, why would I continue doing this? As some sort of masochistic exercise?’ I’ve never read a full one. And I’ve never co-operated with the writing of a book about me.

“When somebody writes their own book and they invent memory, however flattering it may be to me, I don’t know what to say except, ‘Hi!’

“I’ve been around. I’ve been famous for a long time. So Carly, I don’t know how to respond. I would say there is invention there that is simply not true, but that’s fine. And there’s some small amount of truth there. Not a lot, but that’s just one example of what has happened with me for a number of books. I won’t name the people, but if you name them, I would respond, let’s say.”

I thought it was a movie about DeeJays called FANTASTIC BEATS. My Mistake!!

Box office: Fantastic Beasts devours competition with $75 million debut

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the long-awaited, J.K. Rowling-penned Harry Potter spinoff, conjures magic at the top of the domestic box office, earning a sound $75 million to claim the No. 1 spot five years after the premiere of The Deathly Hallows — Part 2.

With an estimated $75 million, the Eddie Redmayne-fronted fantasy notches the lowest number in the Harry Potter film series, though it does mark career-high openings for stars like Redmayne, Colin Farrell, Jon Voight, and Ezra Miller. The film also impressed audiences, earning a rare A grade on CinemaScore. The $180 million picture additionally rakes in $143.3 million from foreign markets for a global haul of $218.3 million.

Coming in at No. 2 is Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange, which dives a harsh 58.9 percent in Beasts’ wake, making $17.7 million across its third weekend. The film has made $571 million around the world, further elevating parent distributor Disney’s record box office year.

Fox’s Trolls dips 50 percent at No. 3, tallying an estimated $17.5 million after its third weekend in wide release. Paramount’s $47 million Arrival suffers the brunt of the studio’s misleading marketing campaign across its sophomore frame, falling 50 percent to No. 4 with an estimated $11.8 million after registering a middling B grade on CinemaScore last week. Rounding out the top five is the holiday-themed ensemble comedy Almost Christmas, which tumbles 53.5 percent to an estimated $7 million.
Outside the top five, major newcomers The Edge of Seventeen and Bleed for This struggle to make a dent on the domestic chart. The former, directed by Kelly Fremon Craig and starring Hailee Steinfeld, averages $2,481 on 1,945 screens for an estimated $4.8 million opening on a soft $9 million budget. Though the film is sure to make back its production costs, early projections suggested the teen comedy would clear that number over its first three days in theaters.

Bleed for This, which stars Miles Teller as real-life boxer Vinny Pazienza, who refused to quit the sport despite suffering a serious spinal injury, fared worse, pulling in a muted $2.4 million from 1,549 theaters. Like Seventeen, however, the film was produced for a modest number in the $6 million range.

Still, both Seventeen and Bleed for This earned positive reviews from critics and were well-received by polled moviegoers, as both films clock in with an A- grade on CinemaScore.

After scoring uncharacteristically negative reviews for Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, Ang Lee also suffers one of his worst performances at the domestic box office for a wide release, as the drama pulls in a dreary $930,000 after expanding to 1,176 theaters on Friday for a No. 14 finish. The technologically groundbreaking film, presented in 4K HD clarity at 120 frames-per-second (the industry standard is 24 fps), has made approximately $22.6 million from international territories, however, though it’s unlikely to make even a fourth of that total in North America.

At No. 21, Amazon Studios’ and Roadside Attractions’ awards-bound drama Manchester by the Sea earned an estimated $241,230 in limited release, pulling in $60,308 from four locations in New York and Los Angeles — the fourth highest per-screen average of 2016 thus far, and the best in Roadside’s 13-year history.

Tom Ford’s directorial follow-up to his acclaimed Colin Firth drama A Single Man, the Amy Adams/Jake Gyllenhaal neo-noir Nocturnal Animals, averages $13,351 from 37 locations for a weekend estimate of $494,000 at No. 18, while Feng Xiaogang’s festival stunner I Am Not Madame Bovary, which won the FIPRESCI International Critics’ Award at TIFF in September, earns $202,500 from 38 theaters at No. 23.

Overall numbers are up around 4.6 percent from the same frame last year. Check out the Nov. 18-20 weekend box office estimates below.

1. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – $75 million
2. Doctor Strange – $17.7 million
3. Trolls – $17.5 million
4. Arrival – $11.8 million
5. Almost Christmas – $7 million
6. Hacksaw Ridge – $6.8 million
7. The Edge of Seventeen – $4.8 million
8. Bleed for This – $2.4 million
9. The Accountant – $2.1 million
10. Shut In – $1.6 million

I can see both sides of this. I’m split.

Steven Van Zandt Says ‘Hamilton’ Cast Should Apologize for Setting a ‘Terrible Precedent’

Steven Van Zandt of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, took to Twitter all day Saturday (Nov. 19) calling on the cast of Hamilton to apologize to Vice President-elect Mike Pence for their speech following Friday’s performance.

“A guy comes to a Broadway show for a relaxing night out. Instead he gets a lecture from the stage! Not a level playing field. It’s bullying,” he wrote. “You don’t single out an audience member and embarrass him from the stage. A terrible precedent to set.”

“So because he’s a public figure we should be rude to him and bully him at public events?” he asked.”I’m not the one who couldn’t be more wrong on this.”

To recap, the cast of Hamilton addressed Pence — who was in the audience — after their Friday night curtain call at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway in New York.

“Vice-president elect Mike Pence, we welcome you and truly thank you for joining us at Hamilton American Musical,” Dixon said in the statement, distributed on social media by the show’s producers. “We sir, we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir. We truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us.”

Van Zandt made his first statement early Saturday, writing, “Hamilton made a mistake. Audiences shouldn’t have to worry about being blindsided like that. Theater should be sanctuary for Art to speak. Lin-Manuel is a genius. He has created the greatest play since West Side Story. He is also a role model. This sets a terrible precedent> Completely inappropriate. Theater should be a safe haven for Art to speak. Not the actors. He needs to apologize to Mike Pence @Lin_Manuel.”

When fans started tweeting at Van Zandt in disagreement, he continued to explain his point of view, adding that there is a time and a place to make a statement, saying audience members are in fact “guests.”

“There has never been a more outspoken politically active artist than me. He was their guest. You protect your guests. Don’t embarrass them. When artists perform the venue becomes your home,” he wrote. “The audience are your guests. It is nothing short of the same bullying tactic we rightly>have criticized Trump for in the past. It’s taking unfair advantage of someone who thought they were a protected guest in your home.”

When comic Richard Belzer stepped into the debate, telling Van Zandt to “stop going through ethical gymnastics to justify your way too thin logic,” Van Zandt shot back. ” love you Richard. You want to do this in public? We can. The Broadway Community and its Art need to be protected. My logic is impeccable.Nobody on this planet disagrees more with everything Pence represents. But I don’t tolerate bullying in any form. Even the respectful kind.”

When fan Lauren Yurick wrote that Springsteen often brings up politics “mid-set” and asked “What’s the difference? This was done post show,” Van Zandt explained that rock shows and theater are different venues.

“You don’t single out an audience member and embarrass him from the stage. A terrible precedent to set,” he wrote. “That’s the difference between Rock and Theater. Different art forms. Different expectations. Different protocols as to what’s appropriate.”

Van Zandt was clear in his opposition to Pence politically, defending his views and pointing out the E Street Band’s stand against North Carolina’s controversial bathroom law and defense of the LGBT community when one fan wrote, “if you cared about your Broadway family, you’d be outspoken on this assault against gay rights. Don’t be a coward.”

“What are you like 10? I’ve spent my life defending human rights including LGBT. Remember us boycotting North Carolina? Were you born yet?” he asked.

“Please don’t misunderstand. Everyone who is sane disagrees with his policies. This was not the time or place to do it is all I’m saying,” he wrote. “The cast was not intentionally rude. The speech was heartfelt with content shared by all of us. Given at the wrong place at the wrong time.”

E Street Band member Nils Lofgren also took to Twitter in defense of Brandon Victor Dixon’s statement, writing, “I don’t see any (bullying) here. Bravo. It is ok to disagree. The audience had the freedom to boo. The statement was truth to power. Any chance you get to speak truth to power right now, you have to take it.”

Van Zandt, who called the statement beautiful, disagreed, saying the proper place for such a statement is in the art of the play itself.

“How about IN THE PLAY! For starters. Just as Lin-Manuel Miranda (the creator of ‘Hamilton’) is already brilliantly doing,” Van Zandt tweeted. “And oh yeah, elections.”

Super Mario Run hits iPhone, iPad on December 15th

Nintendo announced a release date and price for Super Mario Run, the company’s first mobile app to feature its marquee mascot, on Tuesday morning.

Super Mario Run will launch on iOS devices Dec. 15 as a free download to “try elements of the game’s three modes.”

Unlocking the full game will cost $13.99 in Canada. The game will be available on Android devices at a later, as-yet unannounced date.

A new video gives a brief explanation of how the game works with an iPhone or iPad’s touch interface. Mario runs through levels automatically and tapping the screen makes him jump.

The main mode, called World Tour, consists of 24 levels. Toad Rally challenges you to race against other players, hoping to earn the cheers of the diminutive Toad characters commonly found in Mario games. Kingdom Builder allows players to decorate an area of the Mushroom Kingdom with buildings and other in-game items.

Nintendo is partnering with Japanese mobile app company DeNA in developing Super Mario Run under the direction of Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto.

DeNA is also working on upcoming mobile apps based on the popular Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem series of Nintendo games, due out next year.

Apple surprised tech and gaming analysts when it announced Super Mario Run iOS devices at its iPhone 7 event in September.

Until relatively recently, Nintendo has kept its games on its own hardware. The Super Mario Run news comes following the surprise success of Pokemon GO, developed by Niantic, this past summer.

Gord Downie to play Halifax concert for Secret Path project

Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie will be performing in Halifax on Nov. 29 on the heels of his recently released Secret Path project.

The album is a set of songs and a graphic novel honouring Chanie Wenjack, a 12-year-old Ojibway boy who died from hunger and exposure after trying to find his way home from a residential school near Kenora, Ont., 50 years ago.

It was announced in May that Downie had been diagnosed with glioblastoma, a relatively rare but aggressive and incurable form of brain cancer.

The singer-songwriter then embarked on a cross-country tour with the Tragically Hip this past summer, which culminated in a show broadcast by CBC that had almost 12 million viewers.

The Halifax show, announced Tuesday by promoter Sonic Concerts, will be held at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium. Tickets will go on sale on Thursday at noon through the Dalhousie Arts Centre and Sonic Concerts’ website. Tickets cost $61, including fees.

Secret Path originated from a collection of poems written by Downie, which evolved into songs. The album, recorded in 2013, was produced by Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew and Dave Hamelin, known for his work with indie rock group the Stills.

‘Corner Gas’ star Janet Wright dead at 71

Award-winning stage and screen actress Janet Wright, best known for her portrayal of the long-suffering matriarch on “Corner Gas,” has died, according to CTV, which aired the long-running sitcom.

Wright played Emma Leroy on the hit Canadian series, which ended its six-season run in 2009 and returned with a big-screen adaptation in 2014.

Wright’s character Emma was the wife of Oscar Leroy, played by Eric Peterson, and mother to Brent, portrayed by series creator and star Brent Butt.

“Janet was like no other person I’ve ever met,” Butt said in a statement.

“She had a giant wit, a giant heart, and was one of the strongest human beings to ever stride around this planet.”

The series won the 2007 Gemini for best ensemble comedy performance.

Born in England on March 8, 1945, Wright and her family relocated to Canada and eventually settled in Saskatoon at a young age.

She had been affiliated with the Vancouver Arts Club Theater since the early 1970s, and also directed for many major theatre companies across Canada, including productions at Ontario’s Stratford Festival.

“Janet was an artist on an uncompromising search for the truth in all its unvarnished beauty,” said Stratford Festival artistic director Antoni Cimolino, who directed Wright as Ma Joad in the 2011 production of “The Grapes of Wrath.”

“She was a profoundly talented actress, director and champion for the importance of the arts. I will never forget her passion and forever be inspired by her commitment to our work.”

She won the best actress Genie Award in 1992 for “Bordertown Cafe,” and won the best supporting actress in a dramatic program or miniseries award in 2003 for “Betrayed.”

Her film credits include “The Perfect Storm,” opposite George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg, and TV appearances on series “Dark Angel,” “The King of Kensington” and “The Beachcombers.
