‘The Mindy Project’ hits the break room

“The Mindy Project” will go on a two-month hiatus in 2014, Fox announced in a flurry of winter schedule changes.

The low-rated comedy starring Mindy Kaling will air its winter finale on Tuesday, Jan. 28 and then exit the lineup until April 1, when it returns with two back-to-back episodes.

In its absence, freshman comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” will slide into the 9:30 p.m. timeslot starting Feb. 4, where it will finish out the rest of its season.

Tuesdays will also see “Glee” relocated to the night starting Feb. 25, where it will air at 8 p.m., taking the spot of “Dads.”

Fox has additionally opted to give the second season of “The Following” the same NFL launch it gave “Almost Human” with the first episode of its two-night premiere airing after the NFC Championship Game on Sunday, Jan. 19.

I remain shocked that that unfunny show is still on the air.

‘Family Guy’ Cast Gets Big Salary Boost

The Griffins got a raise! Four “Family Guy” cast members who voice the majority of the characters on the show have negotiated a healthy salary bump for upcoming seasons on the Fox animated show.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the four voice actors who make up the “Family Guy” cast — Alex Borstein, Mila Kunis, Seth Green and Mike Henry — has collectively negotiated a new salary between $175,000 and $225,000 per episode. The pay raises are guaranteed for the next two seasons and can last up to five, and they will go into effect during the 12th season of the series which is currently airing.

One major player missing from contract negotiations was series creator Seth MacFarlane, who voices main character Peter Griffin along with son Stewie and Brian the dog. MacFarlane will negotiate separately because “his deal with 20th TV has several other  components,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The “Family Guy” cast followed in the footsteps of TV’s other favorite animated family, “The Simpsons.” In 2008, the six person cast of “The Simpsons,” who voice almost all of Springfield’s citizens, negotiated a pay raise from $300,000 to $400,000 an episode starting with the show’s 20th season. Three years later in 2011, Fox had to cut the actors’ salaries back to $300,000 in order to keep the animated series on the air. “The Simpsons” is now in its 25th season and Fox has already ordered Season 26.

“Family Guy” has not officially been renewed for another season, but since Fox agreed to the new pay raise, a renewal is all but likely.

“Family Guy” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. EST on Fox.

Is that show still on the air?!

Matthew Perry to reunite with Courteney Cox on ‘Cougar Town’

Did someone call for Mr. and Mrs. Bing? TBS just announced that former Friends stars Matthew Perry and Courteney Cox will be reuniting this winter when Perry guest-stars on Cougar Town.

Details about Perry’s role will be announced soon, but if he wants to fit in with the gang, we’re willing to bet he’s going to drink a little wine and make some inappropriate jokes. At least, that’s what we hope happens.

Cougar Town‘s fifth season premieres Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 10 p.m. on TBS.

Lady Gaga will make her third appearance on “Saturday Night Live” next month… but this time, she won’t just be the musical guest.

The “Applause” singer will pull double-duty as the host and performer of the Nov. 16 episode, following in the footsteps of ambidextrous “SNL” hosts Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber and most recently Miley Cyrus. The appearance will come less than a week after her hotly anticipated

“SNL” also announced that indie-rock sister trio HAIM will be performing on the Nov. 23 episode, when “Hunger Games” star Josh Hutcherson makes his hosting debut. This week’s episode (Nov. 2) will feature host Kerry Washington and musical guest Eminem.

Awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome!!!

‘Sherlock’ season 3 premiere date revealed

The world’s biggest premiere date mystery has been solved. Anythingbut.com has learned the return date for Sherlock, along with some details about how the third season roll-out plan came together.

Sherlock will return to PBS Masterpiece on Jan. 19 at 10 p.m. That means the show will air back-to-back for the first time with that other hugely popular and influential Brit import, Downton Abbey (which returns Jan. 5).

This announcement caps nearly two years of rabid fan speculation about when the third season of the international sensation will premiere. This also marks first time the mystery-thriller’s U.S. air date has been announced before the BBC reveals its UK premiere date (the BBC has the “first window” rights to air the show, so UK fans can at least take heart in knowing they will almost certainly get season 3 sometime before Jan. 19).

Masterpiece executive producer Rebecca Eaton tells EW that this is the best season yet of Sherlock, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the legendary detective and Martin Freeman as his partner Dr. Watson (the first official image of the actors from season 3 is above). “They’re fantastic,” she says of the new episodes. “They are jaw dropping. They are like small movies. Benedict and Martin are so in their Sherlock-Watson groove. They are so comfortable with that relationship it’s like being in the room with them.”

Sherlock executive producer Sue Vertue added in a statement: “We are hugely excited about this next series of Sherlock, and have worked closely with our partners, Masterpiece and PBS, to bring these episodes to U.S. audiences in January. We promise our fans that Season 3 is worth waiting for.”

Sunday entertainment programming on the Big 4 broadcast networks has been seriously weakening in the ratings this fall. So the British invasion power-pairing of hugely anticipated Downton season 4 and Sherlock season 3 could make PBS a significant player on that night in January. “We love that Sherlock fans are so passionate and eager to see Season 3,” said PBS chief programmer Beth Hoppe in a statement. “The pairing of Downton Abbey and Sherlock in January offers a blockbuster night of British drama only on PBS stations.”

Sherlock season three production was delayed partly due to skyrocketing demand for its two stars, with Cumberbatch landing roles in Star Trek and several other films, while Freeman snagged the lead of Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit films (in which Cumberbatch also plays a small but pivotal role, as the voice of the dragon Smaug in December’s second film in the trilogy — which ought to make the climactic Bilbo-Smaug confrontation rather surreal for Sherlock fans). Sherlock season three production was then split into three chunks over the course of this year rather than being shot continuously like on most shows.

“The first holdup was the boys, of course, and getting all of them together — not just Benedict and Martin but also [creators] Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss,” Eaton says. “They had to break up the production to accommodate all the movies they wanted to make.”

Once production wrapped in August, the BBC and PBS had to plan their respective schedules. Though fans may feel the wait has been endless, Eaton says that, if anything, the scheduling was hastened because of fan interest. “This is about as quickly as we could have possibly got them on the air once they were made,” Eaton says.

Since the BBC date is not yet public, one lingering question is how big of a gap there will be between the UK and U.S. air dates. Cumberbatch and U.S. fans have lobbied for the show to air in both countries on nearly the same date. Such a move would help prevent the stateside audience from getting spoiled on the show’s surprises (mainly: How exactly did Sherlock survive his rooftop plummet at the end of season two?). It’s an issue overseas audiences are all-too-accustomed to facing while waiting for American shows, and one that TV companies have been giving increasing consideration given the rise of online piracy. “There are things fans would like to do we just can’t do,” Eaton says. “But we do pay attention. This isn’t just the fans of Sherlock speaking up, it’s the nature of the shrinking TV world. So we try to manage that with all the intricacies involved. It’s all taken into consideration.”

Obviously we don’t yet know the BBC date. But given that the U.S. fans had to wait three months after the 2010 BBC premiere to see the first season of Sherlock, then had to wait four months for the 2012 second season after its UK debut, no matter when the BBC schedules its season three premiere, the gap is going to be less than before since Jan. 19 is less than three months from now (that sentence was totally convoluted but does make sense).

The first episode is called “The Empty Hearse” and solves the mystery of Sherlock’s death. The second episode is titled “The Sign of Three” and features — spoiler alert if you haven’t been following the online chatter about the new season — Watson getting married to Mary Morstan (played by his real-life partner, Mr. Selfridge actress Amanda Abbington). The third episode is “The Last Vow” and airs Feb. 2. And then the wait for new Sherlock will begin all over again. Season 4 is heavily presumed to be happening, but the BBC has not confirmed this and the company tends to wait until each season of Sherlock airs until announcing the next.

“I think there’s such an appetite for Sherlock because every season we do they’re bites; the season isn’t 13 episodes, which we would love,” Eaton notes. “They’re complicated to make and we can’t do more than that. So you never get quite enough even when you get a new season. Even more than with Downton, because Downton is 10 hours and it comes back regularly once a year. So Sherlock creates an unusual appetite.”

Personally, I enjoyed Season 4 and I want more!!

‘Arrested Development’: Mitch Hurwitz wants a movie, then Season 5

Mitch Hurwitz has big plans for “Arrested Development’s” future. He’s long been talking about an “Arrested Development” movie, but the comedy TV show’s creator explained why he’d like to be a film to be the next step in the series’ journey during a speech at the New York TV Festival keynote.

Of course, there’s no set schedule for when that dreamed of movie will be made. Hurwitz gave his usual logline — “All I’ve been able to say is, I really want to continue with this, and the cast really wants to continue with this” — before explaining why he’s having such trouble following up Season 4.

“What my new thing is, because it might be tough to get the cast together for the four months you would need to make a series, is to try to get them together for four weeks sooner, and do the movie that is the story that we’ve been building up to in this show,” Hurwitz explains, via The Hollywood Reporter. “And then, bring the series back after that. It’s not my decision, but it’s what I want to do. The reason I’m not just saying, let’s go do the series next, is because I’m worried it’ll take two years to make all those deals — a mess of people, a weird tease to all of us and the audience. So my goal is to do a movie for Netflix type thing, and then go into the series.”

Of what he learned about making “Arrested Development” Season 4, he admits, “What I came to realize is that some perfect version of ‘Arrested Development’ as it exists for me and the actors and the audience and everybody together probably doesn’t exist.”

There was some backlash to the new form Hurwitz experimented with in Season 4, which largely came because it was impossible for the actors’ schedules to align. But Hurwitz takes full responsibility for, as he explains it, not preparing the audience enough for the change of pace in Season 4.

“I felt in many ways, I did not prepare the audience for this,” he says. “Right before the show came out, I thought, I’ve really not said what this is, and what it had become was a novel. I had this unique opportunity here – people are going to get to watch eight hours of this, they’re not gonna spend the next six months of having it doled out to them … so the storytelling changed. That first episode became much more like chapter one of a novel than episode one of a series. And I didn’t prep you guys — I’m really sorry about that.”

Community is back, y’all!!

NBC Pulls ‘Welcome to the Family,’ ‘Ironside,’ Sets ‘Community’ Return

‘Community’ to begin new season with back-to-back episodes

NBC has removed “Welcome to the Family” and “Ironside” from its schedule and set a Jan. 2 return date for “Community.”

The Peacock also said that “Chicago Fire” spinoff “Chicago P.D.” will premiere Jan. 8 in the former 10 p.m. Wednesday timeslot of its forerunner, which now airs on Tuesdays.

“Ironside,” starring Blair Underwood, will vacate that time period after its fourth episode airs Oct. 23, in favor of editions of “Dateline” and various specials (including “Saturday Night Live”-themed specials, as well as consecutive holiday outings for Kelly Clarkson and Michael Buble in December) through the end of 2013.

Meanwhile, “Welcome to the Family” is being axed immediately after three episodes. An encore episode of “The Voice” will air on Thursday for NBC next week, with an “SNL Halloween” special a week later. Then, a live episode of “The Voice” will air Nov. 7, before “Parks and Recreation” returns with back-to-back episodes on Nov. 14 and again on Nov. 21.

“Community” will begin its fifth season and first after a year’s hiatus for showrunner Dan Harmon with back-to-back episodes before settling into an 8 p.m. timeslot on Jan. 9, bumping “Parks and Recreation” to 8:30 p.m.

NBC’s Thursday programming has been struggling since the start of the fall season, and even though “Family” showed a slight gain in its most recent airing, the newcomer remained stuck with a sub-1.0 rating among adults 18-49. A night earlier, “Ironside” fared little better with a 1.1 rating.

Next week’s “Voice” airing might provide a small boost to remaining Thursday freshman “Sean Saves the World” and “The Michael J. Fox Show,” which drew demo ratings of 1.1 and 1.2 this week, respectively.

Please…do this right!!!

NBC developing Johnny Carson miniseries

Johnny Carson is returning to NBC — sort of.

NBC is developing a miniseries based on the life of the legendary Tonight Show host.

The project is based on the upcoming biography Carson the Magnificent: An Intimate Portrait by Bill Zehme. The story will cover Carson’s childhood growing up in Nebraska and his 30-year run as Tonight host, which concluded in 1992. The miniseries will also touch on “his often secluded off-camera life and friendships he made throughout his career as one of the most beloved TV personalities of all time,” NBC says.

The role of Carson, who passed away in 2005, has not yet been cast. The project will be executive produced by Zehme and John Davies.

If they do it, they had better cast Hayley!!

Marvel Working On ‘Agent Carter’ TV Series

Pretty soon, all your media will belong to Marvel. With comic studio conquering the multiplex, and establishing that for the next few years, barely six months will go by without another superhero movie to promote or release, they are now turning their sights to TV. Next week, “Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.” will kick off on ABC, and it seems that’s just the tipping point of what could be much more serialized adventures.

Deadline reveals Peggy Carter, already given an extended life thanks to the straight-to-DVD short “Marvel One Shot: Agent Carter,” is now being eyed for her own series. And that’s about it, really. Details are scarce as the show is still in very early stages, but presumably it’ll follow the same post-“Captain America: The First Avenger” timeline, with Peggy turning secret agent and kicking ass. More crucially, it’s unknown if Hayley Atwell will reprise her part for the series, although our sources tell us she will be back, with shooting to take place next year.

And really, this is a pretty good idea and we could see this being indicative of how Marvel rolls out some of their B level and C level characters. Introduce them in the feature movies, see if they work and resonate, and if so, build them out further on TV, where you can given them the space to develop further.

So we’ll see how this goes, but a pulpy, period-set Marvel spy series? Yeah, that could be pretty fun.
