Twenty-five years…already?!?

At 25, `Tetris’ drops into place as gaming icon
With its scratches and sticky brown beer stains, the “Tetris” arcade machine near the back of a Brooklyn bar called Barcade has seen better days. Which makes sense, given that the machine was made in the 1980s.
Even today, though, it’s not hard to find 20- and 30-somethings plucking away at its ancient controls, flipping shapes made up of four connected squares and fitting them into orderly patterns as they descend, faster and faster as the game goes on.
“You could just play infinitely,” said Michael Pierce, 28, who was playing against Dan Rothfarb, also 28. Both have been fans since they ó and the game ó were young. “Tetris” has its 25th birthday this week.
Pierce recalls playing “Tetris” on a Nintendo Game Boy that was on display in a department store when his family couldn’t afford the unit. Rothfarb played on his Nintendo until the game wouldn’t go any faster.
Completed by a Soviet programmer in 1984, “Tetris” has come a long way from its square roots. It’s played by millions, not just on computers and gaming consoles but now on Facebook and the iPhone as well.
“Tetris” stands out as one of the rare cultural products to come West from the Soviet Union during the Cold War. And the addictive rhythm of its task-by-task race against time was an early sign of our inbox-clearing, Twitter-updating, BlackBerry-thumbing world to come.
In her book “Hamlet on the Holodeck,” Georgia Tech professor Janet Murray called “Tetris” the “perfect enactment of the overtasked lives of Americans.” The game, she wrote, shows the “constant bombardment of tasks that demand our attention and that we must somehow fit into our overcrowded schedules and clear off our desks in order to make room for the next onslaught.”
Many people who grew up with “Tetris” haven’t stopped playing.
“I’d stay up, wait for my parents to go to bed, smuggle my Nintendo into my bedroom, hook it up to my television and play this game until all hours of the morning,” said John Clemente, another player at Barcade. “Tetris,” he says, was the only game to drive him “to the point of insanity.” As a child, he once kicked his Nintendo across the room.
“It was a very love-hate relationship,” he said.
“Tetris” is easy to pick up. Rotate the falling shapes so that you form full lines at the bottom of the screen. Fit the shapes so there are as few open spaces left as possible. Aim for a Tetris: four lines completed in one swoop. Repeat. Watch your score zoom.
But Tetris is hard to master. Because the shapes ó technically known as tetrominoes ó come in a random order, it is hard to predict the best way to organize them so that they can form neat rows.
In fact, in 2002, Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers determined that the potential combinations are so numerous that it would be impossible even for a computer to calculate the best place to put each falling shape. Erik Demaine, an associate professor of computer science, praised the game’s “mathematical elegance,” which perhaps stems from the background of its developer.
Alexey Pajitnov was 29 and working for the Moscow Academy of Sciences when he completed “Tetris” on June 6, 1984, for a Soviet computer system called the Elektronika. A computer programmer by day who researched artificial intelligence and automatic speech recognition, Pajitnov worked on the game in his spare time.
“All my life I liked puzzles, mathematical riddles and diversion,” Pajitnov said in a recent interview from Moscow. “Tetris,” he said, was just one of the games he made back then. The others are mostly long forgotten.
Pajitnov’s creation spread in Moscow through the small community of people who had access to computers. Word filtered through computer circles to the West, where the game drew the interest of entrepreneurs. A company called Spectrum HoloByte managed to obtain PC rights, but another, Mirrorsoft, also released a version. Years of legal wrangling followed, with several companies claiming pieces of the “Tetris” pie ó for handheld systems, computers and arcades.
Complicating matters, the Soviet Union did not allow privately held businesses. The Soviet state held the “Tetris” licensing rights and Pajitnov had no claim to the profits. He didn’t fight it.
“Basically, at the moment I realized I wanted this game to be published, I understood that Soviet power will either help me or never let it happen,” he said.
It wasn’t until 1996 that Pajitnov got licensing rights. Asked whether he made enough money off the game to live comfortably, he says yes, but offers no more details. Today, he is part owner of Tetris Co., which manages the game’s licenses worldwide.
Nintendo Co. was an early and big beneficiary of the game, which stood out from its mid-’80s peers because it had no characters and no shooting.
When Nintendo was preparing to release its Game Boy device in 1989, the company planned to include with it one of the games that are also classics today: “Super Mario,” “Donkey Kong” and “Zelda.” But Nintendo wanted something everyone would play ó a “perfect killer game” that would sell the Game Boy, said Minoru Arakawa, the president of Nintendo of America from 1980 to 2002.
The solution was “Tetris” ó though Nintendo needed help from Henk Rogers, a U.S. entrepreneur.
Rogers had spotted “Tetris” at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and bought the rights to a PC version of the game in Japan from Spectrum HoloByte. In February 1989, he went to Moscow on a tourist visa to try to get the rights for Nintendo. He spent his first day in a taxi with a driver who didn’t speak English, communicating by gestures and trying in vain to find the ministry of software and hardware export. The next morning, he hired an interpreter and things went more smoothly, and “Tetris” got bundled into the first Game Boy.
Since then, “Tetris” has expanded to all kinds of devices and inspired a generation of knockoffs. Tetris Co. says 125 million copies have been sold in various incarnations.
Pajitnov says “Tetris” could stick around another quarter-century.
“I hope so, why not?” he said. “Technology changes a lot, but I can’t say people change a lot.”

Beatles Reveal ‘Rock Band’ Details At E3
The surviving members of the Beatles unveiled new details about their upcoming “Rock Band” videogame at the E3 videogame conference in Los Angeles.
Joined by Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr disclosed 10 of the 45 songs expected in “The Beatles: Rock Band” when it comes out Sept. 9.
The tracks are “I Saw Her Standing There,” “I Want To Hold Your Hand,” “I Feel Fine,” “Taxman,” “Day Tripper,” “Back In The USSR,” “I Am The Walrus,” “Octopus’s Garden,” “Here Comes The Sun” and “Get Back.”
Additionally, they said the entire “Abbey Road” album will be available for purchase and download, as will other tracks from the band’s catalog, after the game’s release, and “All You Need Is Love” will be released exclusively for Xbox 360 users as a downloadable song the day the game hits retail shelves. The proceeds of the single will be donated to Doctors Without Boarders.
Different venues played by the Beatles will be recreated for the game, including the Cavern Club in Liverpool (where they got their start), the Ed Sullivan Show, Shea Stadium and the Budokan in Japan.
The game will take fans into the studio experience after the band stopped touring through “artistic visual expressions known as Dreamscapes, intended to transport players to the imaginative environments that capture the essence of The Beatles’ genre-busting musical and fashion transformations during their later years,” according to the release.
From a gameplay perspective, the release will break from existing music-based games that allow for only one singer, and add three-part vocal harmonies. Content will also include previously unreleased recordings of the bandmates talking between takes during studio sessions recorded at Abbey Road.
A demo version of the game is available for attendees of the E3 conference to play.

Jay-Z and Eminem spin a musical game out of ‘DJ Hero’
The upcoming DJ Hero video game just landed two heavy hitters as MCs: Jay-Z and Eminem.
Both rappers are bringing their music to the newest offshoot of Activision’s successful $2 billion Guitar Hero franchise. The game, played with a turntable-shaped controller, is due out this fall for PlayStation 3, PS2, Xbox 360 and Wii (no price or rating yet).
A special edition comes with the rappers’ new greatest-hits CDs, possibly including previously unreleased tracks, plus an advanced version of the controller, a DJ stand and metal traveling case. Jay-Z and Eminem will serve as consultants to Activision and the game’s developer, FreeStyleGames.
The complete list of tracks the rappers are providing is still being worked out. Jay-Z plans on including Izzo (H.O.V.A.) and Dirt Off Your Shoulder for sure. Also possible: tracks from his in-the-works Blueprint 3 album. “I have a ton of content, I just need the pipeline,” he says. “I love the freedom of (DJ Hero). I could wake up tomorrow morning with the idea for a song and call the guys at Activision and start working on getting it out.”
Eminem is more cryptic about his contributions. “I don’t want to give away any surprises yet,” he says in an e-mail interview. “DJ Hero will include my music, and I’ll be providing additional material as downloadable content by the end of the year.”
Players use the features on the game’s controller ó a rotating record platter, sampling buttons, an effects dial and a cross fader ó to match streams of song tracks, create effects and add personal touches to score points.
“You actually get lost doing it,” says Jay-Z, who has played the game. It creates “a DJ’s universe,” he says.
In addition to single-DJ action, two players can compete or play cooperatively. Special mixes will let players use the Guitar Hero controller. The game spans hip-hop, electronica, R&B, soul and pop/rock with songs by 50 Cent, Beastie Boys, KRS-One, Blondie, N.E.R.D., Gorillaz and David Bowie. Superstar DJs such as DJ Shadow, DJ Z-Trip and DJ AM will contribute, too.
“You are going to get over 100 songs from 80 artists and 80 brand-new mixes that have never been heard before, including one with Eminem and Jay-Z (together),” says Guitar Hero president and CEO Dan Rosensweig.
“This is a game I can see myself actually playing,” Eminem says. “DJ’ing is fundamental to rap music, so it’s a great fit.”

ìGuitar Hero 5″ Exclusive: 10 Bands in September 1st Game
The rock video game war will heat up again in the fall: both of the industryís flagship series are hitting consumers with tantalizing titles in 9/09. Harmonixís The Beatles: Rock Band arrives September 9th, and now Activision has confirmed Guitar Hero 5 is due September 1st. The game will boast 85 brand-new master recordings, and this week Activision is announcing the band lineup in a series of scavenger hunt-like stories; fans who track down all the featured artists can enter a sweepstakes to win five tickets to concerts at a venue of their choice.
Rolling Stone has revealed that tracks from Queen & David Bowie (presumably ìUnder Pressureî), Kings of Leon, Santana, Sonic Youth and A Perfect Circle will appear in the game. The title will also come equipped with tunes by Weezer, Bon Jovi, Billy Idol, Elliott Smith and the Bronx.
According to information posted on the gameís official Website, the entire set list will be available for play immediately, and for the first time home rockers will be able to select any combination of instruments ó so multiple guitarists, bassists, drummers or vocalists will be able to play at the same time (the perfect use for that army of plastic instruments cluttering your living room). Thereís also a new Play Party Mode, which allows instruments to join and drop out of a song without interrupting or ending the track; players need to just pick up an instrument and hit a button to join the action without navigating any menus. Gamespot reports that thereís a new series of competitive modes called RockFest, which include Momentum (difficulty level shifts mid-play) and Streakers (bonus for nailing 10-plus perfect notes). A new Revival Meter allows band members to save a weaker player who has failed out.
CNET adds that Guitar Hero 5ís new features and downloadable content will be compatible with Guitar Hero World Tour. The Rolling Stonesí ìSympathy for the Devil,î Bob Dylanís ìAll Along the Watchtower,î Johnny Cashís ìRing of Fire,î Tom Pettyís ìRunniní Down a Dreamî and the White Stripesí ìBlue Orchidî will also appear on the gameís set list, along with songs by Blur, Blink-182, Kiss, Band of Horses and Iron Maiden.

Lego Rock Band Coming to PS3, Wii and Xbox 360
There is no typo in that headline. Lego and Rock Band are joining forces in Lego Rock Band which is currently in development at TT Games in partnership with Harmonix for PS3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii.
Lego Rock Band is targeting younger and family-centric audiences who might have shied away from big brother Rock Band.
The use of Lego in Rock Band will allow players to “build” their band from their own personal avatar to the manager, crew and even roadies. Expect Lego’s trademark humor found in previously licensed properties to make an appearance as well.
The first screens are below so please click to enlarge for high-res versions. Look for Lego Rock Band in stores this fall.

Beatles edition of `Rock Band’ video game planned
NEW YORK ñ Rock Band is getting the perhaps greatest rock group of all time: The Beatles.
The Beatles’ management said Thursday that a Beatles version of the Rock Band video game will debut Sept. 9. In addition, they’ll sell accompanying instruments modeled after the ones used by the band.
This is the first time Rock Band has based a game on one group, according to MTV Games. It has not yet been determined what Beatles songs will be included in the edition, available for Xbox360, Playstation 3, and Wii video game consoles.
Representatives of the Beatles and Rock Band had been planning a collaboration for months, but initially, the final project was not supposed to be a Rock Band game, but another type of game compatible with the instruments used for the popular series.
But MTV Games said in a statement: “As we moved through the creative process, it just seemed to make sense to clearly highlight the association between The Beatles game and the critically acclaimed Rock Band franchise. The game is being developed by Harmonix and will utilize and build upon the core foundation of Rock Band to create a brand new and innovative Beatles experience.”
Giles Martin, son of Beatles producer George Martin, is developing the product. The Beatles, who broke up nearly four decades ago, have been slow in embracing new technology: their music is still not available for sale on iTunes.
The band’s management, Apple Corps Ltd., is partners in the project with MTV Games and Harmonix.

‘Guitar Hero: Metallica’ Offers New Twists
Several new gameplay twists emerge for the first time on “Guitar Hero: Metallica,” which arrives in stores March 29 from Activision.
Players have a double bass option on drums for the difficult and expert levels, which can be enabled by using a splitter and an additional pedal for the kick drum. In addition, all of the songs will be “unlocked” from the beginning of the game as opposed to them not being available until players reach certain levels, as in previous versions of “Guitar Hero.”
“It was time to change it up a bit,” Neversoft lead designer Alan Flores says. “Guitar Hero: Metallica” will be available for Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2. Aerosmith was the first artist to star in its own version of the game, which was released last summer.
This time around, in Career Mode, instead of taking players through the band’s career chronologically like in “Guitar Hero: Aerosmith,” gamers take on the role of a band that rocks its way onto a Metallica tour as the opening act, a premise based on a true story as relayed by frontman James Hetfield.
As would be expected with the high-octane music, the game’s visuals are rich with pyrotechnics. Metallica also specifically requested that the concert hall views be rendered “in the round,” like its most recent arena shows. Venues include the Los Angeles Forum and Moscow’s Tushino Airport, where Metallica played before 1.6 million fans in 1991 as part of the Monsters of Rock tour.
There are 28 Metallica classics on “Guitar Hero: Metallica,” as well as 21 songs from other bands hand-picked by Hetfield, drummer Lars Ulrich, guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo. Rare live concert videos and vintage show flyers round out the gameplay experience.
Metallica begins a European tour Feb. 25 in Nottingham, England.

Timberlake, Pitt spoofed in upcoming Wii game
LOS ANGELES ñ Justin Timberlake and David Beckham don’t have any real-life beef with each other, but cartoony characters resembling the famous crooner and soccer player will face off ó along with 16 other A-list impersonators ó in the upcoming Wii boxing game “Ready 2 Rumble Revolution” from publisher Atari and developer AKI.
Besides the Timberlake and Beckham copycats, players can don boxing gloves as a lanky Brad Pitt ringer named Fight Clubber or a flabby John Travolta lookalike dubbed Fever Friction. Other characters resemble such famous faces as Sylvester Stallone, David Hasselhoff, James Brown, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Shaun White, Simon Cowell and Antonio Banderas.
“We went with a decent mix of mostly modern, mainstream people that I think much of the younger generation will recognize and know, but then we also went to the other end and grabbed characters that we think some of the older people will recognize as well,” said “Ready 2 Rumble Revolution” producer Todd Slepian of the game’s casting choices.
Unlike previous “Ready 2 Rumble” games, which only offered a handful of unlockable famous stand-ins, the producers opted to fill the ring with celebs for the series’ first outing on the Wii ó although gamers will be able to create their own customizable boxers from scratch. Slepian insists the celebrity-inspired characters are meant as parodies, not clones.
“We wanted to reach out to a broader audience, make it a little bit more mass market and add an element of humor,” said Slepian. “All of these characters are funny and over the top. We thought it lent itself to the ‘Ready 2 Rumble’ brand. All of the old character parodies were received pretty well, so we figured we’d take it to the next level.”

Metallica gets ‘Guitar Hero’ treatment
Next up on the Guitar Hero stage Ö enter Metallica.
The legendary hard rockers are providing the latest riff on Guitar Hero, with a game based on their music expected in stores during the first half of 2009 for Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 3 and PS2. No price or rating has been set, but past GH games have sold for $40 to $50 and have been rated T for ages 13-up.
“Us being a pretty guitar-oriented band, I think we were pretty much destined to do something with Guitar Hero,” says guitarist Kirk Hammett. “It’s a natural sort of relationship. We jumped at the chance.”
Guitar Hero: Metallica plays out differently from Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, the first GH game based on one band (released in June). “There’s a historical element involving some memorable gigs we have played, but it’s not something that follows a chronological timeline to a T,” says drummer Lars Ulrich. “We kind of wanted it to be a little bit more about who we are now than a who-we-were-in-1986 type of thing.”
After an opening set of two Metallica songs ó complete with the 3-D animated band on-screen ó players take the role of a fledgling group of rockers inspired to create their own band. The story line, Ulrich says, “is about helping out a bunch of young dudes to put a band together to come on the road with us.”
Metallica is one of the few bands worthy of a solo title, says Luke Plunkett of game news site Kotaku.com, “because they’re one of the few popular enough ó and with a large enough back catalog ó to make it a worthwhile endeavor. A lot of their biggest songs are built on fast drums, fast guitars and epic solos, which should make them more enjoyable to play.”
Band members Hammett, Ulrich, singer James Hetfield and bassist Robert Trujillo had a motion-capture performance session to bring their 3-D characters to life. About 40% of the 45-plus songs will be from artists that influenced Metallica, played concerts with them or appeared on 1998 covers album Garage Inc. Among them: Queen, the Foo Fighters, Alice in Chains, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Seger, Kyuss and Samhain.
“That is another cool facet of Guitar Hero,” Hammett says. “Younger kids are exposed to all this great rock and heavy metal they’d never be exposed to otherwise.”
You can play solo or with up to four ó two guitarists, singer and drums ó using current game controllers. You also can add a second pedal (sold separately) to propel double bass drums as Ulrich does. The game takes its cue from Metallica’s ferocity. “It’s a couple grades harder than Guitar Hero World Tour,” says lead designer Alan Flores.
