This is very sad news. He was a legend. May he rest in peace.

Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead dead at age 70

Heavy metal band Motörhead’s lead singer Ian (Lemmy) Kilmister has died at the age of 70, the band announced via its official Facebook page Monday night.

The U.K. band stated that the singer, who was commonly known as Lemmy, found out he had cancer on Dec. 26.

The band wrote that Lemmy died at home surrounded by family, while he was sitting in front of his favourite video game.

“We cannot begin to express our shock and sadness, there aren’t words,” Motörhead said in its Facebook posting. “We will say more in the coming days, but for now, please … play Motörhead loud, play Hawkwind loud, play Lemmy’s music LOUD. Have a drink or few.”

Kilmister was known as the growling, whisky-drinking, mutton-chops wearing frontman, famous for turning his amplifiers up to the maximum and for positioning his microphone above his head so that he had to sing looking upward.

Each of the band’s legendary live shows would begin with his loud announcement: “We are Motörhead! We play rock and roll!”

After cutting his teeth in beat bands in the 1960s,he spent time as a roadie for Jimi Hendrix before his first taste of stardom with British space rockers Hawkwind, singing the band’s biggest hit, biker anthem Silver Machine, in 1972.

During his stint in the band, his pummeling bass lines became a stock-in-trade and provided the backbone of the ear-splitting Motörhead, which he formed in 1975 after being thrown out of Hawkwind following a drug bust in Canada.

“I was put on a plane to Toronto – everybody said happy to see you again – did the show, and four o’clock that morning was fired because they thought there might be future legal problems touring America,” Kilmister told Q Magazine in 1991.

He would soon form Motörhead, the name of a song about speed freaks he had written for Hawkwind.

After a bumpy start and early lineup changes, the trio of Lemmy, guitarist “Fast” Eddie Clarke and drummer Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor, tore through a string of albums that fed off the energy of punk rock and helped inspire thrash metal.

Between early 1979 and late 1980, Overkill, Bomber and Ace of Spades sent the band racing toward the upper reaches of the British album charts. In 1981, Motörhead finally hit No. 1 with its live classic No Sleep ’til Hammersmith.

Motörhead would record 22 studio albums in all.

Kilmister took pleasure in the lifestyle of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll, though he railed against heroin after the deaths of people close to him.

He never married.

“I’m still looking in a sort of languorous, morbid way,” he told The Times in 2007. “But I probably missed her while I was on the road or something. It hasn’t changed in 61 years, so it’s probably not going to happen now.”

Kilmister felt a kinship to many punk bands, citing The Ramones as an influence and standing in with The Damned for a handful of gigs in the late 1970s.

Conversely, he was not a fan of the term heavy metal and some of that genre’s bands who cited his music as an influence, once remarking he’d rather listen to The Carpenters at home than Anthrax.

“Slayer? Well … I don’t like ’em, personally,” he told Record Collector on another occasion. “It’s not my kind of music – which, to a layman, might seem to be the same music as ours, but it’s not.”

Lemmy, who was born in England in 1945, spent his recent years in Los Angeles.

The only movie I’ve seen in this week’s Top Five is CREED.

Box office report: In the Heart of the Sea sinks with $11 million opening

Ron Howard’s In the Heart of the Sea ran aground this weekend, debuting to a measly $11 million.

That’s a decidedly dismal start for the whaling epic, which had a production budget just shy of $100 million. The film did earn a B+ CinemaScore, which means that positive word-of-mouth could help it hold up over the next few weeks, but it’s facing a whale of its own next weekend, as Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters after months of anticipation. And no matter how well In the Heart of the Sea holds up, an $11 million opening is a wretched debut for a movie with a $100 million budget. In the Heart of the Sea stars Chris Hemsworth as a real-life 19th-century sailor, who was stranded at sea with his men after a whale destroyed their ship, the Essex. The story is believed to have inspired Herman Melville’s Moby Dick.

In the Heart of the Sea’s debut is more bad news for Warner Bros., and the studio has had a rough year with several pricey flops, including Jupiter Ascending, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., and Pan. While there have been a few bright spots (like Creed), Mad Max: Fury Road and San Andreas are the only WB films to make more than $100 million this year. Warner Bros.’ last release of 2015 will be Point Break, which opens on Dec. 25.

In the Heart of the Sea’s shipwreck cleared the way for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 to top the charts for the fourth weekend in the row, becoming the first movie to do so since Furious 7 all the way back in April. (The Martian spent four non-consecutive weekends at No. 1 in October.) Mockingjay added another $11.3 million to its total this weekend, bringing its domestic gross to $244.5 million.

As In the Heart of the Sea was this weekend’s only major new wide release, holdovers rounded out the top five. Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur picked up third place, earning $10.5 million for a domestic total of $89.7 million, while Creed was close behind with $10.1 million. Its domestic total is now at $79.3 million. And Krampus fell to fifth in its second weekend, dropping just over 50 percent to $8 million. To date, the Christmas-themed horror movie’s domestic total is now at $28.2 million.

But the biggest success of the weekend came from the specialty box office, where The Big Short bagged $720,000 in just eight locations. That’s a per-theater average of $90,000, one of the best of the year and second only to Steve Jobs’ $130,381. Adam McKay’s film earned a fantastic A CinemaScore and racked up four Golden Globe nominations this weekend, and it will open nationwide on Dec. 23.

Here are this weekend’s top five at the box office:

1. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 — 11.3 million
2. In the Heart of the Sea — $11 million
3. The Good Dinosaur — $10.5 million
4. Creed — $10.1 million
5. Krampus — $8 million

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet news!!!

Pearl Jam confirm 2016 tour, promise 25th anniversary festivities

On Friday afternoon, Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament and manager Kelly Curtis took part in a Twitter Q&A, revealing some of their plans for 2016, as Alternative Nation points out.

Curtis confirmed that Pearl Jam will tour in 2016, with the first batch of dates to be announced at the beginning of the year. Additionally, he said the band has something planned to mark their 25th anniversary, but couldn’t share any specifics. If you recall, Pearl Jam celebrated their 20th anniversary with a three-day music festival.

Asked about the prospects of a new album, Curtis said Pearl Jam are “always in and out of the studio and constantly writing.” However, Ament said nothing has been recorded. Pearl Jam’s last album came in the form of 2013’s Lightning Bolt.

Curtis was asked if Pearl Jam would ever be interested in headlining a Super Bowl Halftime show, to which he responded, “Ask me in 10 years OR if the Superbowl is ever in Seattle.”

Awesome news! I need more!!

Ron Howard Provides Promising Update On ‘Arrested Development’ Season 5

During his press tour for his latest film In the Heart of the Sea, Ron Howard stopped by Good Morning America today and spoke with Amy Robach, who asked the Oscar-winning director about the status of Arrested Development‘s Season 5.

“Well, Mitch Hurwitz the creator of the show is working with writers now,” Howard informed, “Netflix is behind it, 20th Century Fox is behind it.”

Beamed Robach, “That sounds like a yes!”

Howard replied: “It’s hopeful. What has happened is that the cast has become so freakin’ in demand and busy. Everyone wants to do it. Fans want it. I would be saddened if we didn’t achieve it. I’m the announcer and the narrator, and I have to get back to that microphone.” Howard also serves as EP on the show, and his Imagine Entertainment label produces it.

At last summer’s TCA, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos told the press corps that another season was underway: “We are plugging along,” he said. “It’s a long, complex deal to make; talent is very busy. … The intent to have a new season of Arrested Development, and all negotiations are underway.”

Netflix said in November 2011 that it had picked up a fourth season of the comedy, which originally aired from 2003-06 on Fox. The 15-episode Season 4 went live on the streaming service on May 2013, and the notion of a fifth season has bandied about pretty much since then. Creator Mitch Hurwitz inked a multiyear deal with Netflix in April 2014, and talk of more Arrested Development heated up again this year. Series co-creator/co-executive producer Brian Grazer said in June that a 17-episode fifth season would premiere in 2016.

Love this!!

Star Wars’ Awesome Tribute To The Beastie Boys

Star Wars: The Force Awakens hasn’t even hit theaters yet and it’s already experienced more dissection and examination than most films could ever hope for. We can’t exactly say that we’re surprised, as few movies have ever developed as much hype as the upcoming continuation to the Star Wars saga. While J.J. Abrams has successfully maintained a great deal of secrecy around the film, he has confirmed one Easter egg in The Force Awakens, and it is a direct reference to the Beastie Boys.

A new report from Yahoo! Movies indicates that the character of Ello Asty from The Force Awakens is in fact a reference to the 1989 Beastie Boys album “Hello Nasty.” Check out Abrams’ full quote on the matter below and see for yourself:

“It is for me. But I’d be lying if I said I came up with that name. It was suggested to me from the creature department. And I loved it for that reason, because it referenced the album, and also because it spells out Lost. And so both of those felt like, they were funny reasons to approve that name. Some names came from the creature department; some came from us, from me, from other people I’m working with. But it was one of the things that just felt like something funny that people might smile at.”

In the film Ello Asty is a reptilian looking X-Wing fighter pilot who fights for the Rebellion against the TIE fighters of the First Order. Think Wedge Antilles only with way more connections to late 1990’s hip-hop. It’s an awesome reference as a well as a reminder that as science-fiction adventure, Star Wars: The Force Awakens will not take itself overly seriously, which likely is a lesson that was learned from the overly dramatic prequel trilogy.

I’m so excited to see him again!!!

Bruce Springsteen Talks ‘The River’ Tour & New Album Plans

The forthcoming record is “more of a solo project,” Springsteen tells E Street Radio.

Bruce Springsteen won’t be retiring anytime soon. As if a box set, Saturday Night Live appearance and full tour weren’t enough to do, the musician announced Wednesday morning (Dec. 9) that he has plans to release a new solo album.

“The project I’ve been working on is more of a solo project,” he told E Street Radio. “It wasn’t a project I was going to probably take the band out on. So I said, ‘Gee, that’s going to push the band playing again until a ways in the future.’ It’ll be nice to get some playing in so you don’t wind up being two or three years between E Street tours. This will give us a chance to get out there and stretch our muscles a little bit.”

Springsteen admitted at first he had no plans to tour after releasing the box set, but “missed playing with the guys” and “playing, period.”

The last time Springsteen played The River from top to bottom was at Madison Square Garden in 2009, and now he’s planning to do it again.

“My recollection was that it was a very good night of music when we played it at the Garden,” he said. “It’s something that we haven’t done, something unique for the fans.”

After giving it some thought, he thought the time was right to hit the road. “Then we felt, ‘Maybe we should do a show just to raise the flag and have some fun and make it a little more exciting,” he said. “I said, ‘OK, maybe we’ll do a show in New York.’ Then that went quick to, ‘Maybe we should do a couple of shows.’ Then it turns into, ‘Maybe we should do a small series of shows, basically one-nighters, with maybe a little bit around the country.'”

Although he concedes that the decision to play The River from beginning to end will take most of the “guessing out of the evening,” he said he will find room to work some other material into the set.

“Maybe we’ll make up for some of that in the encores. We plan on picking out some of the best of our outtakes for the end of the show, and there will obviously be some fan favorites,” he said. “I don’t know myself how it will play out. It should be interesting and a lot of fun for the fans.

“If you were ever curious to hear it played in concert, this is a shot for you to hear it,” he said.

I saw CREED this weekend and it is amazing!!

Box office report: Katniss and Krampus win the weekend

The odds were once again in The Hunger Games’ favor, as Mockingjay – Part 2 won the box office for the third weekend in a row.

Mockingjay topped the otherwise quiet post-Thanksgiving box office with an estimated $18.6 million, bringing its domestic total to $227.1 million and its global total to $523.9 million. The fourth installment in the Hunger Games franchise is the first film to pull a threepeat since Straight Outta Compton in August. (The Martian was No. 1 in four out of five weekends after its release in October.)

The weekend after Thanksgiving tends to be one of the slowest of the year, and as a result, Krampus was the only major wide release scheduled. Still, Krampus actually bested expectations to pull in a solid $16 million, and although it was widely expected to open in the low teens, the Christmas-themed horror comedy took second place. Starring Adam Scott and Toni Collette, Krampus opened in 2,902 theaters and earned a B- grade from CinemaScore.

While Krampus was expected to take fourth, it actually managed to best holdovers Creed and The Good Dinosaur. Creed notched a decent second weekend, edging past The Good Dinosaur to take third place. (Although it’s close enough that things could change when final numbers are released on Monday.) After breaking records to become the biggest Rocky debut of all time, Creed pulled in $15.54 million in its second weekend for a domestic total of $65.1 million.

The Good Dinosaur, on the other hand, took a fairly steep tumble in its second weekend, dropping 60 percent to earn $15.51 million. Although Pixar’s latest film was expected to challenge Mockingjay for first place this weekend, it actually ended up in fourth. As a result, it looks like The Good Dinosaur will become the first-ever Pixar film to not hit No. 1. (Earlier this year, Inside Out opened in second place but eventually dethroned Jurassic World.)

James Bond rounded out the top five in his fifth weekend, as Spectre grossed $5.4 million for a domestic total of $184.5 million. Globally, Spectre has raked in more than $792 million.

The Mother Teresa biopic The Letters was this weekend’s other nationwide release, and it debuted to only $802,000 in 886 theaters. The Letters, which stars Juliet Stevenson, was handily beat by Spike Lee’s Chi-Raq, which only opened in 305 locations but still earned $1.3 million.

The Michael Caine-starring Youth also debuted in four theaters, earning $80,000 for a per-theater average of $20,000. Macbeth, starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, also opened to $67,868 in five theaters, for a location average of $13,574.

Here are this weekend’s top five at the box office:

1. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 — $18.6 million
2. Krampus — $16 million
3. Creed — $15.5 million
4. The Good Dinosaur — $15.5 million
5. Spectre — $5.4 million
