Report: Guns N’ Roses announcing reunion, classic lineup to tour

These days, it’s difficult to conceive how truly enormous Guns N’ Roses was in their prime. Roaring out of Los Angeles in the late ’80s, they sold millions of albums, released one hit after another, burned bright and then flamed out. Much to the dismay of their fans, Axl Rose and Slash haven’t shared a stage since 1993.

Now, after decades of accusations and in-fighting, the impossible is happening: According to reports, Guns N’ Roses are reuniting.

The evidence seems to have begun mounting two weeks ago, when a Portuguese news outlet said that the classic Guns N’ Roses lineup had been contracted to play a two-hour show. Sometime after that, the band’s official Twitter feed posted some mysterious messages that could be interpreted as reunion buzz. “Whatever happened to no news is good news?” the account wrote on Monday (Nov. 9), before adding: “Of course today everyone is a journalist … If only they could read lips … Surely they’ll read between the lines.” Even Duff McKagan’s wife’s friend is being quoted as saying that there is an imminent return to Paradise City.

Somewhere in the middle of all that, rocker Scott Weiland — formerly of Stone Temple Pilots and Slash’s band Velvet Revolver — gave an interview to Alternative Nation where he said: “I think that Guns N’ Roses are getting back together.”

“It was probably way overdue,” he added. “But it’s very cool at this point. You know, let some of that, sort of, negative … dispel some of that negative stuff that was going on for so long.”

Now, the site Dish Nation is reporting that Guns N’ Roses are “days away” from announcing a worldwide reunion tour. “Slash has confirmed that he and lead singer Axl Rose have reconciled after almost a decade of arguments,” reads the article. “And now Los Angeles music insiders close to the band say they have tentatively agreed to perform together again in 2016.”

The timing of the tour would coincide with the band’s 30th anniversary — although technically, GN’R took twenty-two of those years off. Quoting “a music insider,” Dish says: “Promoters are quietly working away to land opportunities. Details of the reunion are expected to leak out in the next few days. Everyone is expecting huge demand for tickets.”

If the report is true, that would likely be the result. Although grunge was signaling the end for metal circa 1993, Guns N’ Roses are one of the few bands who truly did dissolve at the top of the music heap. Their last proper albums, 1991’s “Use Your Illusion” I and II, debuted in the top two spots on the Billboard charts and each were certified 7 times platinum.

The mercurial Rose, however, soon dissolved the band and has spent the last several decades going into hiding, replacing band members and working obsessively on the long-in-development, poorly-received “Chinese Democracy” album. If he were to finally reunite with guitarist Slash, rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin, bassist Duff McKagen and drummer Steven Adler, the tickets would seem to sell themselves — and social media is responding to the swelling rumors as such.

I saw SPECTRE and really enjoyed it!!

Box office report: Spectre earns second highest Bond opening of all time

After a few lackluster weekends in a row, James Bond helped to shake (and stir) the box office, opening to an estimated $73 million for the second biggest Bond debut of all time.

Opening in 3,972 theaters, the widest release ever for a Bond movie, Spectre fell short of Skyfall’s $88.4 million record from November 2012. Still, Spectre’s launch makes it the seventh biggest opening of the year, and it bested Quantum of Solace’s $67.5 million to secure second place on list of best-ever Bond openings. Plus, Spectre has already broken a slew of international records, most notably beating out Skyfall to earn the biggest seven-day U.K. opening of all time.

Spectre, which reunites Skyfall director Sam Mendes and Daniel Craig as 007, also snagged an A- CinemaScore, despite so-so reviews, which suggests that positive word-of-mouth could help give it long legs.

The Peanuts Movie also made a solid debut, bringing in an estimated $45 million. The big-screen retelling of Charles M. Schulz’s classic comic strip earned a stellar A CinemaScore, and Peanuts’ big debut may have eaten into Spectre’s audience. When Skyfall opened in November 2012, it did so unopposed.

Holdovers The Martian, Goosebumps, and Bridge of Spies rounded out the top five, and The Martian held up even better than expected in its sixth weekend, falling only about 21 percent for an estimated $9.3 million. Its domestic total is now at $197.1 million, surpassing Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation to become the seventh biggest movie of the year. The family-friendly Goosebumps earned an estimated $7 million in its fourth weekend for a domestic total of $66.5 million, and Bridge of Spies made $6.1 million, also in its fourth weekend, for a $55 million domestic total.

At the specialty box office, a trio of new movies made their debuts in limited release, with Spotlight, the drama about the Boston Globe’s exposé on sex abuse in the Catholic Church, performing the best, earning $302,276 in five theaters, for a per-theater average of more than $60,000. Brooklyn, which stars Saiorse Ronan as an Irish immigrant in 1950s New York, also debuted in five theaters, earning $181,00 for a per-location average of $36,200. Meanwhile, Trumbo, starring Bryan Cranston as the blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter, opened to $77,229 with an average of $15,445.

All together, this weekend brought in an estimated $163 million, more than double last weekend’s dismal Halloween total. Here are this weekend’s top five at the box office:

1. Spectre — $73 million
2. The Peanuts Movie — $45 million
3. The Martian — $9.3 million
4. Goosebumps — $7 million
5. Bridge of Spies — $6.1 million

Disney fulfills dying fan’s wish with early screening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Disney has fulfilled the wish of a terminally ill Star Wars fan with a private screening of The Force Awakens ahead of its December 18th release. Daniel Fleetwood, 32, was diagnosed with spindle cell sarcoma, a rare connective tissue cancer, in 2012. The disease has subsequently spread to the point where doctors gave him two months to live as of September 2nd.

When Star Wars fans learned of Daniel’s story, they launched a Twitter campaign urging Disney to show him an early screening of the film. Star Wars actors Mark Hamill, John Boyega, and Carrie Fisher all threw their support behind the #ForceforDaniel campaign, and today, Daniel’s wish was fulfilled.

According to Daniel’s wife Ashley, Daniel watched an unedited version of The Force Awakens from the comfort of his home, and also received a phone call from its director, J.J. Abrams.

This is very sad news. May she rest in peace.

‘E.T.’ screenwriter Melissa Mathison dies, aged 65

Screenwriter Melissa Mathison has passed away at the age of 65.

Mathison received an Oscar nomination for her original screenplay to Steven Spielberg’s 1982 classic E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial, which was partly inspired by the divorce of the director’s parents. “Melissa had a heart that shined with generosity and love and burned as bright as the heart she gave E.T.,” Spielberg said in a statement yesterday.

Mathison’s other screenwriting credits include 1997’s Kundun, a film about the 14th Dalai Lama directed by Martin Scorsese. Mathison forged a friendship with the Dalai Lama while working on the film’s screenplay and later became an activist for Tibet freedom.

Her other screenplays included 1979’s The Black Stallion and 1995’s The Indian In The Cupboard. She also wrote the screenplay to Steven Spielberg’s forthcoming adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The BFG, which will open in cinemas next year.

Mathison was married to Harrison Ford from 1983 to 2004 and is survived by their two children. Her brother confirmed she had died yesterday following a battle with neuroendocrine cancer.

They would have been great!!

Outkast Turned Down Super Bowl Halftime Show, Big Boi Says

During an appearance on ESPN’s The Dan Le Betard Show on Thursday (Nov. 5), Big Boi revealed that Outkast nearly performed at a Super Bowl halftime show.

The set-that-could-have-been never came to fruition because NFL organizers offered the duo limited stage time, while Andre 3000 allegedly wanted to perform their hits “Hey Ya!” and “The Way You Move” in their entirety.

“[Andre] didn’t want to cut the songs; he wanted to do the full songs,” Big Boi revealed. “He said, ‘Nah, can’t do it.'”

Sir Lucius Left Foot added that he tried “a lot” to change Andre’s mind but didn’t rule out the opportunity possibly presenting itself in the future. “Hopefully, they invite us back,” he said.

As Pitchfork points out, Big Boi implied that the performance was slated for the 2004 Super Bowl, the halftime show that brought the world Janet Jackson’s infamous wardrobe malfunction.

Last year, Outkast played 40 festivals for their #ATLast reunion tour, celebrating the 20th anniversary of their 1994 debut, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik.

Interesting casting choice.

Noomi Rapace to Play Amy Winehouse in a Biopic

Every music icon whose life ended in tragedy is obligated to receive a biopic, so it’s not surprising to learn that there’s an Amy Winehouse movie in the works. What might be a bit surprising is who they’re casting in the role.

According to Screen Daily, Subotica Films, which previously produced the Jimi Hendrix biopic Jimi: All Is By My Side, is in talks with Swedish actress Noomi Rapace (Prometheus) to portray the Grammy-winning singer. Interestingly, Rapace is about to turn 36, while Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning at age 27.

It’s not too uncommon for biopics to cast actors of inauthentic ages. At 45, Kevin Spacey played Bobby Darin, who died at age 35, in Beyond the Sea. And until a lawsuit halted its development, a Janis Joplin biopic was set to star 41-year-old Amy Adams despite the fact that Joplin also died at age 27.

The Winehouse biopic is tentatively titled Amy Winehouse. Irish filmmaker Kirsten Sheridan, who received an Oscar nomination for co-writing In America with her dad, Jim Sheridan, has already scripted the movie, which she’s also expected to direct. Her previous directorial efforts include the musical drama August Rush.

Every biopic needs competition, of course, and this one may not be an exception. Slashfilm points out that another Winehouse film is reportedly in the works from the singer’s own father, Mitch. But that won’t be a biopic and is actually in response to this year’s hit documentary Amy, which Mitch Winehouse claims is not a truthful representation.

Regardless of what he thinks of it, Amy is still a brilliantly constructed portrait, and also a deeply sad one. The documentary, which has grossed a whopping $8.4 million in the U.S. alone, should be seen while you wait for Sheridan’s take on the troubled artist’s life. If it’s not still playing in a theater near you, check it out now on iTunes and VOD.

I just hope he’s resting in peace.

Robin Williams had multiple afflictions, widow says

Robin Williams’ widow says his medical afflictions would have claimed his life within three years — “hard years” — and that she doesn’t blame him for his suicide.

Susan Williams said the actor-comedian had not only been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a progressive movement disorder, a few months before his death, but also that a coroner’s report found signs of Lewy body dementia, a difficult-to-diagnose condition that leads to a decline in thinking and reasoning abilities.

That may have contributed to the anxiety and depression for which he was treated in his last months, and that likely played a role in his August 2014 suicide by hanging.

Though there were many reasons why he ended his life, she said, it may have all come down to one: “I think he was just saying, ‘No.’ And I don’t blame him one bit.”

She called him “the bravest man I’ve ever known.”

Williams’ symptoms began in November 2013, she said in an interview that aired Tuesday on ABC’s Good Morning America. They included stomach pain, constipation, urinary trouble and sleeplessness.

By the following May, he was suffering from stiffness, slumping, a shuffling gait and “losing his ability in his voice,” she said.

“It’s one minute, totally lucid,” she recalled. “And then, five minutes later, he would say something that wasn’t — it didn’t match.”

In what would be the final week of his life, doctors were planning to check him into a facility for neurocognitive testing. But in those last weeks, he was “disintegrating before my eyes,” she said.

Robin Williams, found dead of an apparent suicide in California, leaves behind a decades-long career in which he portrayed a range of beloved characters both in dramatic and comedic roles.

Williams, who had battled substance addiction in the past, was clean and sober when he died, she said, having recently marked eight years of sobriety.

The couple had been together for seven years and had been wed for three years. She described her husband as “just a dream” and their relationship “the best love I ever dreamed of.”

Additional segments from the interview were scheduled to air Tuesday on World News Tonight and Nightline and Friday on The View.

I’m back from vacation and I’ve now seen everything, except OUR BRAND IS CRISIS And BURNT, which I have no interest in!!

Box office report: Our Brand Is Crisis, Burnt bomb over scary Halloween weekend

The same three holdovers topped the box office again this weekend over what proved to be a very scary Halloween for new releases. Thanks to a trio of weak debuts and Halloween falling on a Saturday, this weekend brought in about $74 million in total, taking the title of the worst weekend of the entire year.

Our Brand Is Crisis, Burnt, and Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse all opened below expectations. Our Brand Is Crisis, which stars Sandra Bullock as an American political strategist working on a Bolivian presidential election, earned a dismal C+ CinemaScore and clocks in as the worst wide release of Bullock’s career, just below the rom-com Two If By Sea, which debuted to $4.7 million in 1996. Directed by David Gordon Green, Our Brand Is Crisis earned an estimated $3.4 million in 2,202 locations, placing eighth for the weekend.

John Wells’ Burnt, starring Bradley Cooper, also marked one of the worst wide releases of Cooper’s career, earning $5 million in 3,003 theaters. Featuring Cooper as a chef angling to make his comeback in the culinary world, Burnt earned a B- CinemaScore.

This weekend’s third new wide-release didn’t even manage to crack the top 10, as the R-rated zombie comedy Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse debuted to an estimated $1.8 million in 1,509 theaters. Earning a B- CinemaScore, Scouts Guide is the second film to be released as part of Paramount’s new flexible distribution plan, which allows the studio to release a film digitally only a few weeks after its theatrical debut. In exchange for shortening the window between a movie’s theatrical release and its home entertainment release, Paramount will give theater chains who agree to the deal a cut of the digital revenue. Because many major theater chains opted out, films like Scouts Guide and last weekend’s Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension debuted in far fewer theaters.

The new releases’ failure to hit double digits cleared the way for holdovers like The Martian to once again top the box office. Ridley Scott’s sci-fi flick has held at No. 1 four out of the last five weekends, and after earning an estimated $11.4 million this weekend, its domestic total is now at a whopping $182.8 million. The Martian is expected to soon surpass Gladiator’s $187.7 million total to become the biggest movie of Scott’s career (not adjusted for inflation).

The PG-rated Goosebumps earned $10.2 million for second place, bringing its domestic total to $57.1 million. Bridge of Spies, which reunites Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, took third again with an estimated $8.1 million and a domestic total of $45.2 million. Hotel Transylvania 2 placed fourth, earning $5.8 million in its sixth weekend for a domestic total of $156 million.

Here are this weekend’s top five:

1. The Martian — $11.4 million
2. Goosebumps — $10.2 million
3. Bridge of Spies — $8.1 million
4. Hotel Transylvania 2 — $5.8 million
5. Burnt — $5 million
