Don’t miss ANCHORMAN 2 or FARGO!!

The Couch Potato Report
April 5th, 2014

It has been a long time since there’s been a Keanu Reeves film to review here on The Report. The last time the Toronto raised performer was featured was in November of 2012 when I gave a glowing review to the blu-ray re-release of his 1989 comedy BILL AND TED’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE.

Prior to that, for a new film, we have to go all the way back to 2008 and my mixed review for the remake of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL.

For a while, Reeves was one of the biggest names in Hollywood, with THE MATRIX TRILOGY, SPEED and POINT BREAK among his many hits.

Of late, he’s just been doing smaller films…which is why it was such a surprise last year when it was announced that he had been cast as the lead in the martial arts film 47 RONIN.

A Ronin is a Japanese samurai with no lord or master. A samurai becomes masterless from the death or fall of his master, or after the loss of his master’s favor or privilege.

47 RONIN is a fantasy action film about a real-life group of Ronin in 18th-century Japan who are trying to avenge the murder of their master

47 RONIN cost approximately $175 million and while it grossed close to $150 million worldwide, the movie made less than $39 million in North America and so is viewed as costly box office disaster.

But you know what, with lowered expectations, it isn’t that bad. The effects are very good and 47 RONIN is actually a pretty good martial arts action film.

It’s never as great as any of Keanu Reeves biggest hits, but I enjoyed it enough to give it a mild recommendation.

I also enjoyed, but I highly recommend the sequel to one of the most entertaining, and most quoted films of all time, the 2004 comedy ANCHORMAN – THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY.

This time around in ANCHORMAN 2 – THE LEGEND CONTINUES, Ron Burgandy and his news team get back together and move from San Diego to New York City and the advent of the 24 hour news channel.

Overall ANCHORMAN 2 is not a great movie – most of what happens is just recycled from the first film – but it has some fantastic scenes, some spectacular cameos, and my gosh is it funny.

Plus, the blu-ray comes with a wealth of Special Features AND three different versions of the film: the theatrical, an extended cut, and a Super Sized version that is 2 hours and 23 minutes long that has some all-new storylines, a musical number, and a whole bunch of new jokes.

It is childish, predictable, and very, very stupid at times, but I loved ANCHORMAN 2 – THE LEGEND CONTINUES! It made me laugh out loud and I can’t wait to watch it again!

The Little Rascals – also known as Our Gang – is a series of comedy short films about a group of poor neighborhood children and their adventures.

Created by comedy producer Hal Roach in 1922, the series is noted for showing children behaving in a relatively natural way, and for featuring boys, girls, whites and blacks all together as equals.

The gang was last featured in the 1994 movie, and now we have THE LITTLE RASCALS SAVE THE DAY.

In the film Spanky, Alfalfa, Darla, Buckwheat, Petey the dog and the whole gang are trying to stay out of mischief as they try anything anything and everything to try and raise the money needed to save their grandma’s bakery.

But – as usual – they can’t seem to do anything right!

I grew up watching the original Little Rascals when I was a kid, and they were accessible to kids of all ages, so I love these characters, but THE LITTLE RASCALS – SAVE THE DAY is too predictable and not that funny. It’s just not a great movie, and that is too bad.

But I will still recommend it to young children. Maybe they will love it, and grow up to discover the original Our Gang shorts from the 1920s. There are a lot of laughs to be had with those ones.

And finally, the two-time Academy Award winning film FARGO has been re-released this week in a new remastered version and it looks and sounds better than ever!!

When small-time Minnesota car salesman Jerry Lundegaard hires two less than perfect thugs to kidnap his wife so he can collect the ransom from his wealthy father-in-law everything goes wrong, especially when the very chipper and very pregnant Police Chief Marge Gunderson takes the case.

FARGO has never needed help as far as how great a movie it is, but in it’s various digital releases over the years – from laserdisc to this blu-ray – as it’s gone from studio to studio through different ownership deals, it’s visuals have suffered.

That has now been rectified. Sadly there are no new special features, but the old bonus material is all still included and the packaging now reflects the original theatrical poster.

Should you already own FARGO on blu-ray, you don’t really need to pick this one up, but I’m glad I did. It is a modern day classic and I want to know that I have the best version available.

The remastered edition of the Coen Brothers still great black comedy FARGO; the not great for adults, but okay for kids comedy THE LITTLE RASCALS – SAVE THE DAY; the spectacular fun of ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES; and 47 RONIN starring Keanu Reeves, headlining a movie for the first time in a while, are all available now, either on disc or on demand.

And that’s this week’s COUCH POTATO REPORT.

Enjoy the movies and I’ll see you back here again next time on The Couch!

He could be great!!

Bond 24 Looking At Chiwetel Ejiofor To Play The Villain

Whoever ends up playing the next 007 villain in Sam Mendes’ untitled Bond 24 has some serious shoes to fill. In his performance as the ex-MI6 terrorist Silva, Javier Bardem created not only an amazing antagonist, but one of the greatest baddies in the history of the franchise. Whoever gets the gig will undoubtedly have to deal with a lot of comparisons – but perhaps that’s the reason why fellow Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor may be the perfect choice for the challenge.

Variety’s sources have learned that MGM and Sony are heavily considering the 12 Years A Slave actor to play the next great James Bond villain. At this point the studios have not yet made an offer, but Ejiofor is reportedly the frontrunner for the gig. Obviously we don’t know anything about the character he would be portraying just yet, but should the actor sign on he would join a cast that includes Daniel Craig (who will be playing Bond for the fourth time), Ralph Fiennes (as the new M), Ben Whishaw (as Q) and Naomie Harris (as Miss Moneypenny). John Logan, who wrote the script for Skyfall as well as screenplays for other hit movies like Hugo, Rango, and Gladiator, is currently scripting Bond 24.

So why would Chiwetel Ejiofor potentially make a terrific James Bond villain? Not only is the guy incredibly talented – as demonstrated across multiple genres – he has also had some experience playing a fantastic villain in Joss Whedon’s Serenity (a.k.a. Firefly: The Movie).

Scheduling is something that the actor would definitely have to work out with the studio. Thanks to the acclaim he has received for his role in 12 Years A Slave, the guy is more in-demand than he has ever been, but perhaps he is a big enough Bond fan that he could find a way to do it. On the horizon for him is the Craig Zobel-directed sci-fi movie Z for Zachariah with Chris Pine and Margot Robbie, and then he will be a part of the massive ensemble featured in John Hillcoat’s Triple Nine.

Bond 24 will go into production this year in target of a November 6, 2015 release date.

I hope to see CAPTAIN AMERICA 2 next week!!

Box office report: ‘Captain America’ soars with $96.2 million weekend

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is yet another piece of evidence that Marvel’s formula for its behemoth superhero franchise is exactly what audiences want.

The sequel to the 2011 original starring Chris Evans as the Super Soldier grossed an estimated $96.2 million this opening weekend, setting a record for best April opening and earning an A CinemaScore from its audiences.

Its opening is all the more impressive when you consider that while it falls beneath The Avengers and Iron Man 3 and 2, it outranks many of the stand-along Marvel character openings, including both Thor films and the original Captain America, which it outgrossed by 48%. (It nabbed an additional $110 million from audiences overseas.)

And while its not surprising that more men than women showed up to watch the latest episode of Marvel’s team of superheroes, more couples were in the audience than families with the majority of the audience between 18-49.

Noah’s audience was eclipsed dramatically by Captain America and it had the drop to prove it. The Darren Aronofsky-directed biblical tale fell a steep 61% this weekend with $17 million, putting its new total at $72.3 million. With a budget of at least $125 million, it’s going to be tough for this controversial tale to end up in the green.

That certainly won’t be the case for the YA hit Divergent from Summit Entertainment. Actress Shailene Woodley and Co. are now members of the $100 million club with the adaptation of Veronica Roth’s novel grossing $13 million this three-day period, a 49% drop that puts its domestic earnings at $114 million.

God’s Not Dead continues to surprise at the box office. The Freestyle Releasing film about one Christian college student’s quest to defend his faith grossed an additional $7.7 million with an additional 580 theaters added to its release. Now in its third weekend in theaters, the the film from director Harold Cronk stands with an impressive $33 million to its name.

Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel rounds out the top five this weekend, earning $6.3 million for the weekend for a total cume of $33.4 million. From Fox Searchlight, the dark comedy starring Ralph Fiennes as an octogenarian-loving hotel concierge is performing well in its wide release. Whether it can outgross Anderson’s most commercially successful films Moonrise Kingdom ($45 million) and The Royal Tenenbaums ($52 million) remains to be seen.

Scarlett Johansson had a busy weekend at the box office, co-starring in Captain America and headlining the R-rated indie from writer/director Jonathan Glazer: Under the Skin. The film, which opened in four locations in New York and Los Angeles earned an estimated $140,000 for a per-screen average of $35,000. It was a far better outcome then Halle Berry experienced in this three-day frame.

Below is the box office Top 5. Tune back in next weekend when the animated sequel Rio 2 opens against Kevin Costner in Draft Day.

Captain America–$96.2 million
Noah–$17 million, cume $72.3 million
Divergent–$13 million, cume $114 million
God’s Not Dead–$7.7 million, cume $32.5 million
Grand Budapest Hotel–$6.3 million, $33.4 million
