The Motion Picture Academy has announced that 248 feature films are eligible for this year’s Oscars. The nominations will be announced February 12, 2002, and winners announced March 24, 2002.

Here are the top 10 movies at the North American box office for the January 4-6, 2002, weekend, according to studio estimates collected Sunday by Reuters. Final data will be issued Tuesday.

Over the weekend “Lord Of The Rings” and “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” passed some Box Office milestones.

TV Guide Online is reporting that ousted Survivor: Africa contestant Kim Powers, the only attractive member of “the tribe”, is in negotiations to pose nude for Playboy.

Meantime, Teresa “T-Bird” Cooper was booted from Thursday’s episode, whittling the tribe down to its Final Four.

COMFORT ME ELMO

Sesame Street kicking off its 33rd season February 4 with a special episode dealing with the horrors of September 11, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The episode will focus on Elmo’s fears after he sees a grease fire break out at a lunch counter. He’ll then get some reassurance from real-life firefighters at a station in Harlem.
