Adele wins big at Brit awards

LONDON (AP) – Soulful songstress Adele capped a momentous year of Grammy Awards triumph and medical woes with a double win at the U.K.’s Brit music awards Tuesday, taking prizes for album of the year and best British female solo artist.

Teen-friendly English troubadour Ed Sheeran won two trophies, including British male solo artist, at an energetic ceremony in London.

It has been a dramatic year for the down-to-earth north London diva Adele, who based her chart-topping songs of heartbreak on a rocky relationship.

Her sophomore album 21 won six Grammys last week and has sold more than 6 million copies in the United States alone. But Adele also had to undergo vocal cord surgery in November to fix a potentially career-threatening throat condition.

She delivered a powerhouse performance of her single Rolling in the Deep to thousands of fans and industry insiders at London’s O2 arena.

“It’s been an amazing year,” Adele said as she received the female artist statuette from petite pop star Kylie Minogue.

“I feel like a drag queen next to you,” joked the winner, who wore a sleek black Burberry gown but towered over Minogue. She thanked her record company “for letting me be the kind of artist I want to be.”

The 23-year-old lost out on the British single prize to boy band One Direction’s What Makes You Beautiful, but took the coveted album of the year award for 21. The statue was presented by singer George Michael, returning to the stage after suffering life-threatening pneumonia in December.

The ceremony also included tributes to two departed divas, Whitney Houston and Amy Winehouse.

Tousle-haired singer-songwriter Sheeran won prizes for solo artist and British breakthrough act.

The red-headed 21-year-old has been panned as bland by some critics, but has amassed legions of young fans through online releases and a relentless calendar of shows.

Sheeran thanked his manager for transforming a “spotty, chubby ginger teenager” into a Brit-winner.

Long derided as dull, the Brits have become a lively celebration of U.K. music and style — and this year’s awards come with British music riding high around the world.

“I’m so, so proud to be British and to be flying our flag,” said Adele, who has the century’s best-selling album so far.

Tuesday’s event — which kicked off with Coldplay performing Charlie Brown and included live turns from Sheeran, Florence and the Machine, Noel Gallagher, Bruno Mars and Rihanna — brought out a host of stars who blended rock ‘n’ roll attitude and fashion finery.

Blur frontman Damon Albarn dressed down for the red carpet in jeans and a flat cap, and former Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher wore a leather jacket. But others struck a snazzier note. Actor Ray Winstone arrived in a pinstriped three-piece suit, complete with watch chain.

Style standouts included Minogue, in a strapless sky blue dress; plump-lipped Internet sensation Lana Del Ray, wearing a floor-length red gown; and Florence and the Machine’s Florence Welch, in a lacy peach dress by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen.

Coldplay won their fourth best British group trophy, while Foo Fighters were voted best international group.

Bruno Mars took the prize for international male solo artist, and Rihanna won the international female prize for a second year.

The Barbadian singer, who has often been in the news for non-musical reasons since her then-boyfriend Chris Brown attacked her at a pre-Grammy Awards party in 2009, thanked her fans.

“At times when I feel misunderstood, my fans always remind me that it’s OK to be myself,” she said.

Lana Del Rey appeared moved to be named international breakthrough act.

“This award means much more to me than you know,” said the singer, who has gone from Internet-fueled buzz to backlash in record time after a disastrous performance last month on Saturday Night Live.

Britpop icons Blur received a special prize for their contribution to music.

The four original members — Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree — performed together for the first time since a series of concerts in 2009, offering versions of 1990s hits including Girls & Boys and Parklife.

Most of the awards are chosen by more than 1,000 musicians, critics and record industry figures, with several decided by public vote.

The Couch Potato Report – February 18th, 2012

Inside this week’s Couch Potato Report is trash, the future, some rum, a lady, a tramp, and Malcolm X.

There is a wide variety of films out this week, and I’ll begin by bringing in the TRASH.

Made-in-Montreal, TRASH is about a former drug abusing street kid who has cleaned up his ways and is now in his forties, running a successful garbage collection business, with a beautiful wife and family.

One night, while out trying to keep his neighbourhood safe, he finds a drug addicted prostitute – in the trash – and decides to make it his mission to help her…no matter what it costs him…his business, his family, his life…whatever it costs.

TRASH really held my interest for the first hour, but the last part of it – as our hero’s downward spiral goes on and on and on – lost me, and that is why I can’t strongly recommend it…but I did think it was pretty good.

So, call that a mild recommendation.

We are off to Calgary now, where the majority of the wannabe intellectual drama THE FUTURE IS NOW was shot.

This one has good intentions, as it features several artists sharing their creative views on the world while it asks about the importance of art and culture in society.

But what ultimately dooms it is the premise used to get us into the story – an female journalist – who isn’t likeable – meets an man who, while also unlikeable is a responsible citizen, but he’s disengaged from greater society. He believes once he’s dead nothing more matters. So, as an experiment to see if she can turn his pessimistic views around, she sends him on a journey…which is where he meets the philosophers, art creators and others he talks to.

Since the two lead characters – both played by actors – are people you don’t care about, and are just not likeable, that ultimately makes their actions, motivations, and conclusions moot.

Now, when THE FUTURE IS NOW goes away from the two leads, and lets the architect, activist, poet and other people speak, then it has something to offer. Not enough to make me recommend it, but something.

I really didn’t like THE FUTURE IS NOW…and I couldn’t wait for it to end. That isn’t me being pessimistic, this movie is just a waste of time.

Dear diary…this week I watched a film that I really wanted to like…one called THE RUM DIARY that was based on a novel by the great writer Hunter S. Thompson – who I love – and starring Johnny Depp – an actor whose work I usually love…and you know what diary? I did, I really liked it. It was never great, but it was very smart, very funny at times, and ultimately very good. I am glad I saw it, diary…and I will see you again tomorrow.

Depp stars in THE RUM DIARY as a man who travels to Puerto Rico to write for a run-down local newspaper. He quickly learns to like the rum soaked life the Island offers, and the beautiful fiancé of a relocated American entrepreneur.

THE RUM DIARY – not unlike FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS – is really meant for true Hunter S. Thompson aficionados…and it is to you whom I highly recommend it! To everyone else, know going in that this is not a movie for everyone…and if you like it, make sure you read everything Thompson ever wrote…it will open your mind!

William Shakespeare is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s pre-eminent dramatist. He has given us lines such as: “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?”; “O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?”; “Now is the winter of our discontent.”; “If you prick us, do we not bleed? if you tickle us, do we not laugh? if you poison us, do we not die? and if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?”; “This above all: to thine own self be true.”; and – of course – “To be, or not to be: that is the question”.

But…what if he didn’t write those lines…what if someone other than William Shakespeare wrote them, and the works attributed to him?

What if Shakespeare of Stratford was a front to shield the identity of the real author or authors, who for some reason did not want or could not accept public credit?

That is the premise for the film ANONYMOUS.

ANONYMOUS is as pseudo-historical drama that is a fictionalized version of the life of Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford, a playwright, poet and patron of the arts.

It presents him as the true author of Shakespeare’s plays, and also tells the story of the succession of Queen Elizabeth and the Essex Rebellion against her.

ANONYMOUS works best when it focuses on the Shakespeare authorship question, and whether the Queen declares that de Vere will never be known as the author of his plays and poems. That stuff I really, really enjoyed.

The other stuff…the attempt to make it a political thriller…didn’t appeal to me as much, but I still enjoyed the film.

It has a great cast – including Rhys Ifans, Vanessa Redgrave, Joely Richardson and David Thewlis – the costumes and sets are very good…and it also features Shakespeare’s timeless words.

ANONYMOUS is not an exceptional film…but it is very good. I enjoyed it, and I easily recommend it.

Something else I also recommend is THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL!

In celebration of the 25th Anniversary of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical a lavish production was undertaken and filmed, inspired by the original staging. This fully-staged production features most of what you’ll remember from the well-known versions that have traveled the world, but the main difference is that is set in London’s legendary Royal Albert Hall.

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL features a cast and orchestra of over 200, plus some very special guest appearances, and if you love this show it is a must own!!

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL and ANONYMOUS are both very entertaining releases.

And – for different reasons – so is VOLUME 4 of Mike Judge’s animated series BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD.

Beavis and Butthead are two socially awkward, metal loving teenage delinquents who were the stars of an animated show that originally aired from March of 1993 to November 1997. In addition to stories about their lives and mis-adventures, their show also featured them commenting on music videos…and being very, very funny in the process…and after too many years away, they are back!!

New episodes began airing last October 27, and those episode make up VOLUME 4.

The boys no longer make fun of just music videos, they – and their show – also mock reality shows like 16 AND PREGNANT and JERSEY SHOW, among others.

Times have changed since BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD first aired, so the new stuff doesn’t feel as clever or fresh as it did in the old days…but it is still funny, laugh out loud funny at times…and VOLUME 4 is for those who enjoy a good, cheap laugh.

One television show that feels just as fresh – to me – as it did when it first aired – because I remember seeing it when I was a kid – is Dr. Seuss’ THE LORAX…based on his book of the same name.

This 1972 television special has been released ahead of the new theatrical film based on Dr. Seuss’ book that will be released March 2nd, and while a whole new generation will discover the story of a useless but versatile fashion product made from trees that kills a forest, the new one has a lot to live up to, as this original version is still amazing to watch.

I love THE LORAX…he speaks for the trees!

It is worst release of the week time!! This week that “honour” goes to a failed crime drama called TEXAS KILLING FIELDS. In this movie – totally devoid of tension or drama – a Texas homicide detective teams up with a cop from New York City to investigate a series of unsolved murders….and you…won’t…care.

TEXAS KILLING FIELDS has a great cast that includes Sam Worthington, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chloë Grace Moretz, and Jessica Chastain from THE HELP, but they can’t help this boring movie, which was inspired by true events.

Skip this one…it is a complete waste of your time.

We have arrived at STORAGE WARS now…the reality television series about some guys – and a woman – who travel throughout California to buy storage lockers…because when rent is not paid on a storage locker for three months in California, the contents are sold by an auctioneer. You get the whole thing, no matter what is in it…and there can be good and bad.

The people on the show are professional buyers, and they are very good at what they do. Their goal is to turn a profit on the merchandise they buy, and they usually do that…and when the show is about the lockers and the stuff they find, I enjoy STORAGE WARS.

Why I didn’t recommend SEASON ONE when it was released last year was because – quite often – these “professional buyers” are awful human beings…even complete jerks on occasion.

But the reason I will now recommend SEASON TWO is because the producers seem to have realized that their cast of characters were too unlikable, and so they have produced a more likeable series of shows.

STORAGE WARS – SEASON TWO is very entertaining, and I recommend you check it out. Skip SEASON ONE, but this one is great!!

Hey…do you remember the classic movie scene where the dogs named Lady and The Tramp are eating spaghetti and meatballs in a back alley? It is a classic scene, and Walt Disney’s 1955 film LADY AND THE TRAMP looks and sounds better than ever now, with its release on blu-ray.

This romantic tale of an uptown Cocker Spaniel who falls for a streetwise downtown Mutt comes with a wealth of special features, but the primary reason to pick it up is for the timeless film itself.

I love LADY AND THE TRAMP, always have, and I always will.

Finally this week, Spike Lee’s masterful 1992 film about the life of controversial and influential Muslim minister and human rights activist MALCOLM X.

Denzel Washington gives a great performance in this film, and it is a spectacular piece of work, and the new blu-ray comes housed in a 40-page book containing production photos from and information on the film. It also includes the Academy Award nominated 1972 documentary…also called MALCOLM X.

Both films are worthy of your time, and I easily recommend you pick up this tremendous package!

Spike Lee’s still impressive biopic MALCOM X, the Disney classic LADY AND THE TRAMP, the very entertaining SEASON TWO of the show STORAGE WARS, the useless TEXAS KILLING FIELDS, Dr. Seuss’ fun 1970’s television special THE LORAX, VOLUME 4 of the insightful and funny BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD, the performance film THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL, the entertaining ANONYMOUS, Johnny Depp’s very good Hunter S. Thompson inspired THE RUM DIARY, the awful partially-filmed-in-Alberta pseudo-documentary THE FUTURE IS NOW, and the pretty good made-in-Montreal film TRASH are all available now, either on disc or on demand.

Coming up inside the next Couch Potato Report

The punk rock movie THE OTHER F WORD, the Academy Award nominated PUSS IN BOOTS, the failed TOWER HEIST and Clint Eastwood’s J. EDGAR and UNFORGIVEN.

I’m Dan Reynish. I’ll have more on those, and some other releases, in seven days.

For now, that’s this week’s COUCH POTATO REPORT.

Enjoy the movies and I’ll see you back here again next time on The Couch!

‘Safe House,’ ‘The Vow’ beat out new ‘Ghost Rider’

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The President’s Day holiday weekend box office was too close to call as the action tale “Safe House” and the love story “The Vow” competed for the No. 1 spot.

Based on Sunday’s studio estimates, Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds’ “Safe House” had a slim lead with $24 million from Friday to Sunday. That put it a fraction ahead of Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum’s “The Vow” with $23.6 million.

The winner won’t be known for certain until Tuesday, when studios will report final numbers for the long holiday weekend. Final numbers often vary from weekend projections, which include estimates for the size of Sunday’s audiences.

No matter which one finishes on top, the movie business remains unusually brisk for winter, typically a slow season at theaters. The business uptick comes after Hollywood lumbered through a humdrum holiday season at the end of last year, when audiences were apathetic about most new releases.

“I still think people don’t want to stay home, and if you give them good choices, you get them out,” said Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for Universal Pictures, which released “Safe House.”

The top-five movies were bunched up tightly, with Nicolas Cage’s sequel “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” opening a close No. 3 with $22 million.

Dwayne Johnson’s family action tale “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” was No. 4 with $20.1 million. Reese Witherspoon’s love-triangle comedy “This Means War” debuted at No. 5 with $17.6 million.

Starring Washington as a CIA traitor on the run, “Safe House” raised its domestic total to $78.2 million. Sony Screen Gems’ “The Vow,” which features McAdams as an amnesiac car-accident victim becoming reacquainted with her husband (Tatum), lifted its total to $85.5 million.

While “Safe House” and “The Vow” held up well, Sony’s “Ghost Rider” follow-up came in below industry expectations, doing a bit less than half the $45 million the first one pulled in with its 2007 debut.

In “Spirit of Vengeance,” Cage reprises his Marvel Comics role as Satan’s bounty hunter, this time trying to save a child from the devil.

Released by Warner Bros., “Journey 2″ is a modern take on Jules Verne’s “The Mysterious Island.” It padded its total to $53.2 million.

In 20th Century Fox’s “This Means War,” Witherspoon plays a woman who captures the hearts of two CIA agents (Chris Pine and Tom Hardy), the spy guys going from best pals to rivals as they pursue her.

Disney’s English-language version of the Japanese animated hit “The Secret World of Arrietty” opened in narrower release and came in at No. 9 with $6.4 million. Based on Mary Norton’s children’s novel “The Borrowers,” about tiny people living beneath the floorboards of a house, the film features a voice cast that includes Carol Burnett, Amy Poehler and Will Arnett.

The weekend’s overall domestic revenues totaled $160 million, up 10.7 percent from the same weekend last year, when “Unknown” led with a $21.9 million debut, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

So far this year, revenues have soared to $1.42 billion, a 19 percent increase from 2011′s receipts.

“Every weekend this year has been up vs. the comparable weekend a year ago, so Hollywood is definitely on a roll right now,” said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian.

Here are the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Final domestic figures will be released Tuesday.

1. “Safe House,” $24 million.
2. “The Vow,” $23.6 million.
3. “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance,” $22 million.
4. “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,” $20.1 million.
5. “This Means War,” $17.6 million.
6. “Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace” in 3-D, $7.9 million.
7. “Chronicle,” $7.5 million.
8. “The Woman in Black,” $6.6 million.
9. “The Secret World of Arrietty,” $6.4 million.
10. “The Grey,” $3 million.

NEW YORK (AP) — Lindsay Lohan’s comeback trail is leading her to “Saturday Night Live.”
NBC says the troubled actress, whose career in recent years has been upstaged by legal and personal problems, will serve as guest host of “SNL” on March 3. The network said Sunday that the musical guest that night will be Jack White.

It will be Lohan’s fourth turn as host of the late-night comedy show. She presided in 2004, 2005 and 2006, before her career faltered. In recent years, she has mostly been in the public eye in connection with her multiple arrests and episodes of substance abuse. In December, she appeared in Playboy magazine in a mostly nude pictorial.

‘The Colbert Report’ to return Monday after absence

NEW YORK (AP) — A representative for Stephen Colbert says “The Colbert Report” will return Monday after a sudden break due to the ailing health of the star’s mother.

The Comedy Central show last week substituted repeats for scheduled shows on Wednesday and Thursday. At the time, the network said only that the cancellations were because of “unforeseen circumstances.”

Colbert is expected to address his absence on Monday. His 91-year-old mother, Lorna Colbert, is ill.

Earlier on Twitter, Colbert thanked those who had offered “thoughts and prayers.”

Colbert’s father, James Colbert, and two of his brothers were killed in an airplane crash in 1974.

Grohl defends Grammy speech

LOS ANGELES – Foo Fighters’ frontman Dave Grohl was forced to defend his Grammy acceptance speech on Friday after numerous fans and critics interpreted his words as a critique of modern pop music.

“I love music. I love ALL kinds of music…Electronic or acoustic, it doesn’t matter to me,” Grohl said.

“The simple act of creating music is a beautiful gift that ALL human beings are blessed with. And the diversity of one musician’s personality to the next is what makes music so exciting and … human,” added the “Walk” singer.

While the Foo Fighters won five awards at last Sunday’s Grammy Awards, it was Grohl’s acceptance speech for their best rock performance win that stirred viewers after the singer/songwriter said their latest album, “Wasting Light,” ”shows that the human element of music is what’s important.”

“Singing into a microphone and learning to play an instrument and learning to do your craft, that’s the most important thing for people to do. It’s not about being perfect, it’s not about sounding absolutely correct, it’s not about what goes on in a computer. It’s about what goes on in here pointing to his heart and what goes on in here pointing to his head,” the singer had said on Sunday.

Critics slammed Grohl’s comments with LA Weekly’s Dennis Romero calling them “wrong on so many levels,” citing the singer’s former band, Nirvana’s “decidedly retro style … endeared it to pop writers and music executives.”

Grohl, who performed with electronica-dance DJ Deadmau5 at the Grammys on Sunday, defended his comments saying he was criticizing the digital enhancement of fixing or perfecting music as removing “the human element” and not the pop or electronic-dance music genres.

“That thing that happens when a song speeds up slightly, or a vocal goes a little sharp. That thing that makes people sound like PEOPLE. Somewhere along the line those things became “bad” things, and with the great advances in digital recording technology over the years they became easily “fixed,” said the singer on Friday.

“A lot of music that sounds perfect, but lacks personality. The one thing that makes music so exciting in the first place.”

Exclusive: Bruce Springsteen Explains His Experimental New Album

‘This is as direct a record as I ever made,’ he says

Two years ago Bruce Springsteen told Rolling Stone that he had just written his first song about a “guy that wears a tie.” The songwriter had spent much of his career writing about characters struggling in tough economic times, but the financial crisis convinced him it was time to write about the people and forces that brought America to this ugly point.

The result was Wrecking Ball, a scathing indictment of Wall Street greed and corruption and a look into the devastation it has wrought. “This is as direct a record as I ever made,” Springsteen tells Rolling Stone. “That’s with the possible exception of Nebraska, which this record has a lot in common with.”

The stark subject matter is paired with an experimental sonic palette that Springsteen created with producer Ron Aniello. “The record basically started out as folk music – just me and a guitar singing these songs,” says Springsteen. “Then Ron brought a large library of sound that allowed me to explore – like maybe a hip-hop drum loop or country-blues stomp loop. The actual drums came later. There was no preconceived set of instruments that needed to be used, I could go anywhere, do anything, use anything. It was very wide open.”

Album opener “We Take Care of Our Own” poses a question: Do Americans take care of their own? The songs that follow make the answer clear: The narrator of the slow waltz “Jack of All Trades” struggles to find work, while the anti-hero of the country-folk stomper “Easy Money” decides to imitate “all them fat cats” on Wall Street by turning to crime. The similarly uptempo “Shackled and Drawn,” meanwhile, offers a political analysis worthy of Woody Guthrie: “Gambling man rolls the dice, workingman pays the bill/ It’s still fat and easy up on banker’s hill/ Up on banker’s hill, the party’s going strong/ Down here below we’re shackled and drawn.”

The album’s themes shift midway through, as economic despair gives way to a quest for spiritual redemption. It ends on a hopeful note with the ambitious “We Are Alive.” The song takes on an Irish-wake feel, as Springsteen celebrates Americans (and aspiring ones) who died fighting for progress: “I was killed in Maryland in 1877/ When the railroad workers made their stand/ I was killed in 1963 one Sunday morning in Birmingham/ I died last year crossing the Southern desert my children left behind in San Pablo… We are alive/ And though we lie alone here in the dark/ Our souls will rise/ To carry the fire and light the spark/ To fight shoulder to shoulder and heart to heart.”

There are genuine musical surprises throughout. The cinematic “Rocky Ground” expands on the hip-hop-inspired vibe of “Streets of Philadelphia,” while prominently featuring the voice of gospel singer Michelle Moore, who even delivers a brief, apparently Springsteen-penned rap. “Death To My Hometown” is a Celtic-influenced foot-stomper that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Dropkick Murphys album. “We Are Alive” borrows the horn riff from Johnny Cash’s “Ring Of Fire,” while “Land Of Hope And Dreams” (originally written and played live with the E Street Band in 1999) has been re-worked with electronic drums and a gospel choir.

“Hope and Dreams” also has a saxophone solo by the late Clarence Clemons. The Big Man’s sax can also be heard on “Wrecking Ball,” alongside trumpeter Curt Ramm – who will be in the five-piece horn section (which also includes Clemons’ nephew Jake) that will be hitting the road with Springsteen on his upcoming tour.

Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy will present at the Oscars

All those Twitter campaigns and pleads to the Academy to choose The Muppets as the hosts of this year’s Oscar telecast have paid off, sort of. The Muppets may not be hosting the Oscars (it’s still Billy Crystal), but Hollywood’s premier power couple — Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy — will appear onstage together to present an award.

They join the company of such previously announced presenters as Tom Cruise, Halle Berry, Ben Stiller, Emma Stone, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lopez, Chris Rock, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Bradley Cooper and the cast of “Bridesmaids.”

Oscar nominee Bret McKenzie jokes Miss Piggy might pull a ‘Kanye’ if Sergio Mendes wins best original song

Stars of the original “Muppet Show” and multiple films, Kermit and Piggy’s careers were rejuvenated this year with the commercial and critical favorite “The Muppets,” co-starring Amy Adams, Chris Cooper and co-writer Jason Segel (“How I Met Your Mother”).

The film has one Oscar nomination, in the Original Song category — and since there are only two nominees (the other is “Real in Rio” from “Rio”), it has a good chance of winning. However, we won’t be seeing the gang sing “Man or Muppet” this year, as the show no longer features performances of the nominated songs. Which is a great shame, as it would have been pretty awesome to see the Muppets perform the tune with songwriter/”Flight of the Conchords” star Bret McKenzie.

The Academy Awards air live Sunday, February 26 on ABC.

NEW YORK (AP) — Comedy Central’s “Colbert Report” is off the air and it’s a mystery why.

An expected new episode of the show was replaced by a repeat on Wednesday. Comedy Central said Thursday’s live show will be off, too.

The network said it was airing the repeats “due to unforeseen circumstances,” but offered no other explanation. A person close to the show, who wasn’t authorized to speak publically on the matter, told The Associated Press that new episodes are expected to return soon.

A publicist for Colbert declined to comment.

Colbert’s popular “fake commentary” program airs Monday through Thursday, following “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart.
