Lightfoot announces fall tour
TORONTO (CP) – A few years ago, fans of Gordon Lightfoot were wondering whether the music legend would ever be able to perform again.
But after a long stay in hospital due to a burst blood vessel in his abdomen, Lightfoot eventually returned to the stage. Last year, he played more than 40 concerts, including the Live 8 concert in Barrie, Ont., and a stint at a Las Vegas casino.
On Monday, Lightfoot announced an 11-city fall tour that will take him to six provinces.
It’s the first cross-country tour the 67-year-old troubadour has undertaken in seven years.
“The pure pleasure of playing live never wears off, even after 40 years in the business,” Lightfoot said in a statement.
“I am overjoyed to once again tour this great country.”
The concerts will kick off October 3 in Vancouver, followed by shows in Montreal, Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Ont., and Ottawa. He’ll complete his travels with a three-night stop at Toronto’s Massey Hall.
Tickets for select cities are already on sale.

Rocker Bryan Adams in Pakistan for quake relief gig
KARACHI (Reuters) – Canadian rocker Bryan Adams thrilled 10,000 fans at a concert in Karachi on Sunday, the first big show by a Western singer in Pakistan in decades, to help students affected by country’s October 8 earthquake.
Adams, who performed most of his hits and moved the audience with “Summer of 69,” said he was glad to discover new fans in Pakistan.
“I am here because this city has a special love for music,” the singer greeted his fans at the Arabian Sea Club on the outskirts of Karachi, as hundreds of Pakistani police guarded roads and checked vehicles leading to the venue.
The Canadian rocker said before the show that he was excited to help the victims of the earthquake in northern Pakistan.
“The whole idea of coming to Pakistan is very exciting on many levels … we are the first Western artists to come and play a big concert here,” he singer told a news conference.
“We are going to raise a lot of money hopefully to help rebuild some schools in the areas that have been devastated.”
Over 17,000 of the more than 73,000 killed in the quake were children who died in schools destroyed in the quake. About 3 million people were left homeless by the disaster.
Adams, who will meet President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz in Islamabad on Monday, said he had no worries about coming to Pakistan.
Musharraf was instrumental in Pakistan joining the U.S.-led war on terrorism in 2001, a move that sparked a violent anti-Western reaction by Islamist radicals.
The hard-line Islamists oppose Western influences in Pakistan, especially rock music, dress and movies, which they consider immoral influences counter to Islam.

Keep on rockin’ in the free world!

Eddie Vedder goes ‘Wild’ with Stones
NEW YORK (Billboard) – The Rolling Stones got a lift from Pearl Jam vocalist Eddie Vedder during their performance of “Wild Horses” at Pittsburgh’s PNC Stadium Wednesday.
Earlier in the evening, Pearl Jam played an hour-long opening set featuring such hits as “Alive,” “Even Flow,” “Daughter,” “Black,” “Jeremy” and “Better Man.”
The band previously opened four Oakland, Calif., shows for the Stones on the 1997 Bridges to Babylon tour, the last of which saw Vedder join the band for “Waiting on a Friend.” Pearl Jam’s fall tour resumes Friday and Saturday in Atlantic City, N.J., while the Stones’ A Bigger Bang trek moves on Saturday to Hershey, Pa., where Beck is the opening act.

The new CD – which comes out on Tuesday – is pretty good!

Stones fans jam Maritime show
MONCTON, N.B. (CP) – Steve Cole made the trek to a New Brunswick hillside to see the Rolling Stones before the final chapter is written in their long and legendary career.
Cole, a 30-year-old musician from Saint John, N.B., wasn’t even born when Mick Jagger and the Stones began a rock and roll dynasty that has endured for more than 40 years.
On Saturday, the band came to a 40-hectare field at Magnetic Hill, N.B., to perform for the first time – and many believe the last time – in Atlantic Canada before an estimated crowd of 75,000 cheering fans.
“It’s just one of those concerts you have to go to,” said Cole.
“The Stones, that’s where it’s at. They’re legends.”
By late afternoon, Magnetic Hill was so jammed with people that the concert announcer proclaimed it “the second largest city in Atlantic Canada,” after Halifax.
Fans of all ages sprawled on the grass, danced, sang and guzzled beer as musical groups such as Les Trois Accords and Our Lady Peace warmed up the crowd for the final act – the Stones.
Some of the concertgoers were even older than the Stones themselves.
Helen Sweett and her husband, both in their 70s, drove from Halifax for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
“I’ve never been to an outdoor rock concert like this,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to see what it was like. The tickets were a gift from my husband.”
Jagger, 62, hasn’t said whether the Stones’ “Bigger Bang” world tour is, in fact, a farewell tour.
“A good thing never ends,” Jagger said during the opening performance of the tour in Boston last month.
At the Moncton show, Jagger, wearing a hot pink satin jacket, gyrated and pranced like a teenager, showing no signs of tiring.
The show opened with fireworks and flashing lights in a dazzling display that had the huge crowd screaming.
“Thank you New Brunswick,” Jagger hollered to cheers.
“Where else are you from – from Newfoundland and from Nova Scotia and from Prince Edward Island.”
Dignitaries in the audience included Frank McKenna, Canada’s ambassador to the United States.
McKenna, the former premier of New Brunswick, said the show will put the province and Moncton on the map.
“Fascinating, wonderful, fabulous,” he said of the show.
The Bigger Bang tour will last into 2006, and it’s an open question whether the elderly rockers – they’re all in their 60s except for 58-year-old Ron Wood – can fight the vagaries of time and age to mount another world tour.
“Sense tells you they’re getting old and who knows what will happen,” said David Churchill, who travelled from St. John’s, N.L., for the concert.
“I figured this was pretty close, so it’s time to see them.”
The outdoor concert at Magnetic Hill could prove the largest stop in the Stones’ tour, and it was the largest in history for Atlantic Canada – a region often left off the tour schedules of high-profile bands.
The only other draw as big as the Stones at Magnetic Hill was Pope John Paul II in 1984.
The Stones’ seven-storey-high stage dwarfed the still-standing stage where the late pope delivered his blessings.
Nearby is the strange, so-called “magnetic” hill where cars seem to coast uphill, thanks to an optical illusion. Magnetic Hill is one of New Brunswick’s most popular tourist attractions.
But the fans didn’t need magnets to draw them to the concert. They were there for the timeless attraction of the Stones’ music.
“They’re today’s music,” said Mark Lapierre of Dartmouth, N.S.
Organizers’ prayers for good weather were answered.
Sunny skies and cool breezes kept concertgoers comfortable while sitting on the hillside, which forms a natural amphitheatre.
Earlier in the week, hurricane Katrina threatened to travel up the East Coast and ruin the concert. But the remnants of the storm in Canada produced only heavy rains that were quickly absorbed by the bone-dry ground.
“We couldn’t have asked for better conditions,” said concert organizer Donald K. Donald.

Foo Fighters, Weezer unveil a new round of dates

Seven new October shows–in Champaign, IL; Detroit; Cleveland; Fairfax; Philadelphia; E. Rutherford, NJ; and Oakland, CA–are the latest additions to the outing.

I was just in Chicago!!

Chicago to host Farm Aid’s 20th anniversary benefit show
The Chicago area will be the site of the 20th anniversary Farm Aid concert, co-founders Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp announced Monday (7/11).
This year’s show is set to take place Sept. 18 at Tinley Park, IL’s Tweeter Center, the site of the first Farm Aid Concert in 1985. (The venue was known at the time as the New World Music Theatre.) Tickets will go on sale July 30, organizers said.
Besides Nelson and Mellencamp, this year’s Farm Aid show will also feature longtime supporters Neil Young and Dave Matthews. Other performers will be announced, according to a press release.
The anniversary concert will be preceded by a week’s worth of food and music events in Chicago aimed at drawing attention to the city’s efforts to promote foods grown on family farms.
Last year’s Farm Aid concert took place at the White River Amphitheatre in Auburn, WA, which is located about 35 miles southeast of Seattle, and previous shows have been held in Burgettstown, PA; Noblesville, IN; Columbus, OH; and Bristow, VA, among other farming regions.
Nelson, Mellencamp and Young staged the first Farm Aid concert in 1985 to raise awareness about the loss of family farms and to raise funds to keep farm families on their land. Matthews, who has appeared on several Farm Aid bills, joined Farm Aid’s board of directors in 2001.
Organizers say that Farm Aid has raised more than $27 million over its history to support family farms.

It was a good performance of the song!

McCartney Makes History with “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”
Sir Paul McCartney’s “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” performance with U2, which kicked off Live 8 in London Saturday, was the first time the former Beatle had ever played the song live. The British rocker has never included the tune in live sets, because he always felt odd performing it without his former group. But McCartney thought it was a great idea to open the show with Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band as it has the perfect opening line – a reminder of Live Aid 20 years ago. He says, “I was rung up, initially, by Bob Geldof… and he said, ‘We want you to open up with U2. We’ve got this idea: 20 years ago today… Do Sgt Pepper. I said, ‘You know what, that’s a good idea, ‘ so I did it.”

It should be a series of great shows! I don’t know if they will change the world, but they will be great shows!!

Watching Live 8: TV, Web, Mobile Options
Dozens of artists are poised to perform on stages around the world during Saturday’s (July 2nd) Live 8 concerts. In the United States, if you’re not planning to attend the show in Philadelphia, you can catch everything from highlights to entire regional concerts via television, online and mobile broadcasts.
As previously reported, the massive global initiative is being spearheaded by Live Aid organizer Bob Geldof in an attempt to fight poverty and influence leaders of Canada, the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States to act when they meet July 6-8 in Perthshire, Scotland, at the annual G8 summit.
AOL Music (AOLmusic.com) will offer the most music, with live feeds from six of the 10 concerts. The first will come from Berlin Brandenburg Gate beginning at 8 a.m. ET, followed by events in London’s Hyde Park (9 a.m. ET), Rome’s Circus Maximus (9:30 a.m. ET), Toronto’s Molson Park (11 a.m. ET), Philadelphia’s Benjamin Franklin Parkway (12 p.m. ET) and Paris’ Palais de Versailles (1 p.m. ET).
Because simultaneously watching multiple Live 8 concerts will be a struggle for even the most adept Internet surfer, AOL Music will offer viewing of all six complete concerts on demand for six weeks after the event.
In addition, AOL Music will also provide a “global” feed with highlights from all of the shows, presumably including the remaining Live 8 events in Johannesburg’s Mary Fitzgerald Square, Moscow’s Red Square, Cornwall, England’s Eden Project Arena and Tokyo’s Makuhari Messe. (An additional July 6 show will be held in Scotland’s Murrayfield Stadium to coincide with the opening of the G8 summit.)
On television, MTV and VH1 will start their live broadcast at noon ET, coinciding with the beginning of the Philadelphia concert, with coverage running through to 8 p.m. ET. ABC will air a two-hour highlights show, “Live 8: A Worldwide Concert Event Presented by Nokia,” beginning at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
Those on the move tomorrow will not have to miss the action, as GoTV Networks will broadcast from various shows around the world to mobile phones on its newly launched alternative music channel ALTitude. Additionally, the service, which is available on Sprint, Nextel and Boost Mobile wireless platforms, will offer Live 8 content on its premium GoTV video package and Diva channel.
Although subject to change, AOL Music has confirmed the order of the Philadelphia bill, with a live from London feed of Paul McCartney and U2 to kick off the show. In addition to local performances by the Black Eyed Peas, Bon Jovi, Toby Keith, Maroon5 and more, additional sets from London (Madonna, Pink Floyd), Rome (Tim McGraw) and Berlin (Green Day) will be cut into the show. Stevie Wonder will close out the event.

12:14 – Black Eyed Peas
12:33 – Bon Jovi
12:54 – Madonna live from London

Live 8: Moscow Joins Roster, Young To Play Canada
Live 8 has added a concert in Moscow’s Red Square, ensuring that all of the G8 industrialized nations will be represented at Saturday’s (July 2) event. At deadline, the only act confirmed for the show was the Pet Shop Boys. Last week, a concert was added in Tokyo, featuring Bjork, Good Charlotte and McFly.
Live 8 will now encompass 10 shows in London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Philadelphia, Barrie, Ont., Johannesburg and Eden Project in southwest England. AOL Music will cybercast each show live.
It was also confirmed today that the Barrie show will be closed by Neil Young, making one of his first live appearances since suffering a brain aneurysm in March. He will be accompanied for select songs by the Fisk University Jubilee Choir.
Meanwhile, Sheryl Crow has dropped off the Paris bill due to “substantial logistical and personal challenges,” according to her official Web site.
