SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVE REFERENCED THIS STORY THIS AFTERNOON, BUT HERE IT IS IN IT'S REPORTED FORM FROM The Digital Bits.
Now then... this is UNOFFICIAL. We've been told by various sources that at least SOME work has been done to get Raiders of the Lost Ark closer to release on DVD. Word is that the films would be released one per year, as 2-disc special editions. And our friends at The Force.net have received an interesting report on this subject. Apparently, director Steven Spielberg paid a surprise visit to a film class at USC last week. During a Q&A with the students, he mentioned that he doesn't do audio commentaries for his work because he thinks they detract from the film experience (which we already knew). More importantly, however, he revealed that he recently turned down a request from George Lucas to record commentaries for the DVD release of the Indiana Jones films. Which confirms that at least some serious thought is being given by Lucasfilm to releasing them. Does that mean we can expect to see Raiders on disc in 2002?
Only George Lucas knows for sure.
In her new book Rosie O'Donnell comes out to let everyone know about it.
Well it's about time!
DOUBLE TROUBLE
The great Joel and Ethan Coen are in talks to write an update of the 1966 British caper comedy, "Gambit", about a British thief who conspires with a beautiful woman to rob a rich guy of his expensive statue, but the heist is imperiled by a series of double crosses. Hugh Grant is in talks to star.
Universal has secured an order against ads promoting the movie flop "Rollerball."
The lost View Askew film comes to DVD
In 1995, between the production of "Mallrats" and "Chasing Amy", the cast and characters from those films took a side trip to make a small independent film relatively unknown to fans of the View Askew Universe. Although not directed by Kevin Smith himself, the film weaves in and out of his worlds and the surreal nature of his films. Drawing Flies is coming to DVD soon from indieDVD.
Slackers in Vancouver B.C. lose their welfare checks and head for a cabin in the woods to save cash or so they believe. In actuality their guide Donner (Jason Lee) leads them further and further into the forest on a delusional pursuit of Bigfoot.
Two audio commentaries will accompany the film, the first with directors Malcolm Ingram and Matthew Gissing, the second with actors Jason Lee, Jason Mewes, Renee Humphrey, Carmen Lee and Producers Scott Mosier and Kevin Smith.
An introduction to the film by Scott Mosier and Kevin Smith explains the film, and additional footage integrated into the film, bloopers, deleted scenes, and several stories by Kevin Smith round out the features.
Described by Smith as "the best film that we were ever involved with, that was shot in Canada, that wasn't Good Will Hunting.",
"Drawing Flies" is coming to DVD on February 26th with a suggested retail price of $19.98.

The Awards seaons rolls on as Britain announces it's British Academy Film Awards nominees.
It's been a busy weekend of searching the internet to find out the release dates for some of the DVD titles you are curious about, but here is what I found out:
Universal's "Back to the Future Trilogy" is set to street in July, with "E.T.- The Extra Terrestrial" following in August. Warner's "The Majestic" is tentatively set for May 12th. A "Blue Velvet: Special Edition" in the works for release later in 2002 at MGM, along with "Spaceballs" and "Thelma & Louise." Warner's "The Color Purple" is also expected to be released as a special edition this year, as are "Amadeus" and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (the latter will both be 2-disc releases).
Fox's "Speed: Five Star Collection" should be announced soon, although "True Lies" has been pushed back on the slate, probably due to the September 11th attacks.
Criterion is working on "The Fireman's Ball," and has plans to do Wes Anderson's "Bottle Rocket" and "The Royal Tenenbaums" as well. Artisan is working on "Glengarry Glen Ross" for March, and the long-awaited "Frank Herbert's Dune: Special Edition" (for mid-year).
They also have the "Reservoir Dogs: 10th Anniversary Edition" (due in July now), and a special edition of "It's a Wonderful Life" due in September that's expected to include lost footage. A new special edition of "Stargate" is also due in September.
The good people at Columbia TriStar are already at work on "Black Hawk Down," and their "Jerry Maguire: Special Edition" is due by mid-year.
And finally, Warner Bros. is planning to street their 2-disc "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" on May 28th, 2002. And their remake of "Ocean's 11" will arrive on DVD on May 7th.
There! Now you are as up to date as I am.
I spent some time watching MuchMusic this weekend for the first time in a long time. The problem that has kept me away from the channel was that the only person on the channel that has anything engaging to say is a sock puppet. None of the on -air "humans" have anything to say. My dilemma here is that I like to watch music videos, but have no outlet that serves me.
**Sigh**
And this weekend proved that MuchMusic is no longer interested in having people like me, 34 year old pop culture and music lovers, as viewers.
This weekend an 18 year old Vancouver guy won MuchMusic's VJ search. Now I spent some time watching the kid that won, so I have to ask, how hard did they look in their "search"?
Like I said, I feel so old watching the channel. Maybe I should just play my old 8- Tracks and forget music videos.
But if my 13 year old nephew gets a job at MuchMusic next, I will watch again!
See you Much! It's been nice knowing you!
I almost hate to admit this, but the best film I saw this weekend was the chick- flick "A Walk To Remember." But even though I went to see the movie it finished number two at the weekend box office and "Black Hawk Down" contunes to lead the North American box office race.
AUSTIN POWERS LOSES HIS "GOLDMEMBER TUSTLE
International superspy Austin Powers has just lost some of his mojo to James Bond.
The title of the upcoming third installment of the hit comedy franchise ``Austin Powers in Goldmember,'' has been ruled ''inadmissable'' by the Motion Picture Assn. of America (MPAA), following a protest by MGM/UA, home of the Bond films.
MGM and Bond producer Danjaq Prods. had claimed that New Line Cinema's Austin Powers title was an unauthorized parody of 1964's ``Goldmember,'' the third film in the Bond franchise.
New Line quietly took down its online promotional sites and began rescinding marketing materials on Friday, a day after the edict was handed down by the MPAA's three-member title administration arbitration panel, but has vowed to appeal.
Until the issue is resolved, New Line said in a statement it would refer to the film as ``the third installment of 'Austin Powers.''' It is scheduled for a July 26 release.
New Line added that ``the issue currently in dispute does not pertain to the title or content of the film. Indeed, in 1997, New Line's use of the title 'The Spy Who Shagged Me' was cleared by the MPAA. Thursday's hearing was solely about a procedural infraction, and nothing more, between New Line and the MPAA, which we are in the process of resolving privately. We find it unproductive and will not tolerate any deliberate attempts to manipulate the facts in the press to further aggravate this matter.''
In case anyone missed the joke, ``Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me'' echoes the title of the 1977 Bond film ``The Spy Who Loved Me.''
Despite using titles such as ``Octopussy'' themselves, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, its United Artists unit and Danjaq have always been notoriously humor-impaired when it comes to the Bond franchise: they have been known to sic hard-hitting Hollywood litigator Pierce O'Donnell on auto companies that had the temerity to use a well-dressed spy as the subject of a TV ad.
Similarly, MGM and UA would have loved to put a stop to the use of ``The Spy Who Shagged Me,'' but when they registered a protest with the MPAA in 1997, New Line countered the suit and won. This time, New Line apparently failed to go through the proper channels in its counter and, for now at least, does not have the right to use the ``Goldmember'' title.
``MGM/UA and Danjaq have a zero-tolerance policy towards anyone who tries to trade in on the James Bond franchise without authorization,'' an MGM spokesman said Friday.
Given MGM's attitude toward its sacred Bond cow, it's hard to believe that it would see fit to abandon its advantage at this point. New Line could conceivably fight the ruling under fair use in copyright law.
Rappers 2 Live Crew, for example, took their use of the Roy Orbison song ``Pretty Woman'' all the way to the Supreme Court, which then reached the explicit conclusion that a parody falls within the scope of the fair-use defense. It would, however, be impossible to market the film as ``Goldmember'' during that process.
A new title, then? New Line marketing president Russell Schwartz is certainly up to the task, but it would be a brain teaser: ``Goldmember'' is the name of one of four characters that ''Powers'' star Mike Myers portrays in the film.
He was a kid who didn't know how to relate to people so he took a Playboy Plamate to his prom.
I hope they keep in touch. Karen Paynter and I have drifted apart over the years.
In what I hope isn't a bid to be relevant again Pearl Jam honours Joey Ramone of their new single.
I told you about this last week, but I am still so excited about it that it must be reported again: Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz will all be returning for "Shrek 2."
Whoooo hooooo!!!
Enrique Iglesias bumps George Harrison from the top of the UK charts.
The video for the chart topper stars Jennifer Love Hewitt. Iglesias' next video will stars Anna Kournikova. Oooh man, is she sexy!!!
For his work helping filmmakers Robert Redford will receive an Honorary Oscar.
Here's some good news to get you through the weekend. Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz are all coming back for "Shrek 2."
Well, if you are in the mood for a film this weekend you are in luck! There is a slew of new films opening up!
Michelle Pfeiffer and Sean Penn star in the "Oscar Craving" production I Am Sam, which is surprisingly NOT based on the work of one Dr. Suess.
Featuring a great cast, that includes "Memento" lead Guy Pierce, Disney remakes and releases The Count Of Monte Cristo, a film which is ripe for a parody; and if parody is in your mind this weekend, then see Kung Pow: Enter The Fist. Sure it's dumb! Sure, it's really stupid! But what else would you expect from the writer and director of "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls"?!?
How about a date movie, Dan? Well, if you are calling a lady- friend to see a movie, then this weekend gives you the surprisingly entertaining A Walk To Remember. She will love it, and you for going. And honestly, and quite surprisingly, it really isn't that bad.
Bad had better not be the word I use after I see The Mothman Prophecies. This pseudo horror film looks good, and stars Laura Linney and Richard Gere, but I am a bit worried that it comes from the director of "Arlington Road," which I thought was horrible. Here's hoping the "phecies" part of "The Mothman Prophecies" is not all that we remember!
And that's new in theatres this weekend! Enjoy the popcorn!
ON THE PROWL

Former Catwoman Michelle Pfeiffer say that Ashley Judd is a purr- fect choice to take over the role.
Even though she was let go from her recording contract, and given a $28 million payday, Mariah Carey will likley return to the top of the charts. Or so say the experts.
As for me, well I have nothing to say. Except we'll see. Yes we will see if the wind will cry Mariah again.
Creed is no longer number one. Now, Alan Jackson leads the music charts.
A new comic book will commemorate the September 11th attacks.
Pioneering actor Sidney Poitier will receive an honourary Oscar.

"First you've got it. Then you've lost it." That was the quote from "Trainspotting" that now seems to be coming to fruition as the music labels are pulling the plug on established and fading stars.

ANOTHER TENACIOUS UPDATE
Don't forget that The Self Proclaimed World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band, TENACIOUS D, will appear on NBC's LAST CALL WITH CARSON DALY this evening, January 23rd, 2002.
How about The D, on TV? Does that move you?

Cadillac has recruited Led Zeppelin to help make its line of cars more appealing. The auto maker will use Zep's classic "Rock and Roll" in a new series of TV ads. It's the first time the legendary band has sold one of its songs for a commercial.

After weeks of trying to find out of it was true, we now know that the rumour was true! EMI has dumped Mariah Carey, but given her a $28 million pay- off.
I'd go away too for that kind of money!
If you missed it on Saturday Night Live you should watch Kevin Spacey spoofing "Star Wars." May the force be with YOU!
Jazz vocalist Peggy Lee has died at the age of 81. R.I.P.
Weezer gives new album an actual title
Weezer's next album will have a name instead of a colour.
The band's website confirmed that Weezer's new disc has been dubbed "Maladroit," after the name was suggested by a fan on the group's bulletin board.
Dubbing the album "Maladroit" "means that the 'colour' theme will not be revisited this time around. Maladroit, by the way, means inept, clumsy, awkward or unskilled.
The site said the new disc will include "Take Control," "Dope Nose" and "Keep Fishin'," all of which were tried out in concert during the last year. The band has also been posting demos for the new album online. Want to hear some of those demos?
Indiana Jones 4 is finally set to go! FINALLY!!
Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford have still got an Indiana Jones thing going on. Foxnews.com reports that the fourth Indiana Jones film will be Spielberg's next project, once he completes work on "Catch Me If You Can," with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks. "We have a title, but we're not ready to announce it," Spielberg told Foxnews.com after Sunday's Golden Globe Awards, which honoured Ford with a career-achievement prize.
Spielberg also revealed that his wife, Kate Capshaw, will appear in the film. Ford told Foxnews.com that the only hesitation in returning to the Indy Jones character was the lack of a decent screenplay.
"It was always about getting the right script, and now we have it," he said. Over the years, a number of screenplays and rumours have circulated through movie-buff circles, involving everything from Jones fending off an alien invasion to discovering the lost continent of Atlantis.
One screenplay, later reported to be the work of an over-ambitious fan, was dubbed "Indiana Jones And The Sons Of Darkness," and featured the daredevil archeologist battling Russians to retrieve part of Noah's Ark. Still another involved flying saucers and Area 51, but the strangest of all was "Indiana Jones And The Garden Of Life," which saw Jones searching for signs of Adam and Eve.
In June 2000, it was reported that "The Sixth Sense" writer-director M. Night Shyamalan had been hired to write a screenplay for a sequel to be filmed in 2002. There's no indication so far of which scenario will be tackled in "Indiana Jones 4," or whether Shyamalan's screenplay is the version to which all parties have agreed.
Meanwhile, as Spielberg prepares for "Catch Me If You Can" and "Indiana Jones 4," he's also editing his upcoming film "Minority Report," a futuristic thriller with Tom Cruise. His busy schedule means that Spielberg won't go ahead with his long-planned adaptation of Arthur S. Golden's best-selling novel "Memoirs Of A Geisha."
"I'm not going to do it," Spielberg told Foxnews.com. "It's over."
But, there will finally be an Indiana Jones 4!! Man, do I hope it's better than A.I.- Artificial Intelligence!
The Virtually Unknown Rosamund Pike Joins The New JAMES BOND Movie
Rosamund Pike (Wives and Daughters) will play Miranda Frost in the upcoming James Bond film, joining Halle Berry as the film's two main Bond girls.
In related news, Pierce Brosnan has said he'll likely sign on to star in at least one more Bond movie.

KISS OF THE DRAGON (VHSr & DVD)- This Jet Li action-fest is a good but not great Luc Besson-produced film about a Chinese government agent who becomes trapped in a deadly conspiracy while on assignment in Paris. The DVD offers audio commentary from Jet Li, co-star Bridget Fonda, and director Chris Nathon, as well as a few featurettes and storyboard to scene comparisons. What the DVD does not do is explain why Bridget Fonda is in this movie.
ROCK STAR (VHS & DVD)- The once Marky Mark, Mark Wahlberg, and Jennifer Aniston star in this story of a "...wanna be, who got to be." You got to be skipping this one. Unless you like pure cheese. Then you should give it a shot! Just don't shoot your TV!

May's "Spider- Man" movie is keeping it's World Trade Centre shots in.
I don't want to make a big deal over this, but I want to say Happy Birthday to my friend and anythingbut.com partner Dave.
Today is his birthday!
Happy Birthday buddy!
They don't, but a rival network is saying that MTV Canada plays too many videos. Just for fun, can you guess who the rival network is?!?
After taking a few years off to have some kids (unfortunately they aren't mine) Jodie Foster is back making movies again! And first up is a thriller with David Fincher, the director of "Seven" and "Fight Club!" So, do you want to see the trailer for "Panic Room"?
You should! Then get ready! The movie hits theatres March 8, 2002.
Hank Azaria's show has been yanked by NBC after only 2 weeks.
In a weird twist of fate, I've never been in a sitcom and I have done almost as many episodes as Hank Azaria.
Up next, I aim to score as many goals as Donald Brashear!
...the re- release of George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" soars to the top of the British charts.
Are the North American charts next?
After a week of fun in the snow, "Personal Velocity" takes top honours at the Sundance Film Festival.
The next big festival in Utah? The Winter Olympics!
And it's doubtful Mariah Carey will win there either.
The Academy Award nominations don't come out for almost a month, but with "A Beautiful Mind" winning 4 Golden Globes, and "Moulin Rouge" recieving 3, the stage is set for Oscar.
Here's the complete list of Globe winners and (now) Academy Award front runners.
But just remember, just because someone wins, doesn't mean they deserve to.
"Black Hawk Down" goes up to number one at the weekend box office.
Dan's review?: A great, but flawed movie.
Talk magazine will be shutting down after it's February issue.
Don't blame me, just because I never read an issue. Oh, wait, maybe you should blame me!
Your prayers have been answered! David Duchovny will return for The X- Files season finale.
Well, new this weekend in theatres is Ridley Scott's "Black Hawk Down" and Cuba Gooding, Jr. leads a team of "Snow Dogs." Personally, I am finally going to get a chance to see the luscious Jennifer Connelly, and some guy named Russell Crowe, in "A Beautiful Mind."
Yes, could I get a large popcorn and a medium Dr. Pepper please...
Director Ridley Scott is working on the ultimate "Blade Runner" DVD.
Ridley, here's a request: Put both versions of your movie, with and without narration, on the DVD.
Does the new TRON DVD hold the key to the sequel?
You'll have to answer it on your own.
SUNDANCE FEVER
More films are getting picked up at the Sundance Film Festival, with Fox Searchlight paying $2.5 million for rights to John Malkovich's feature directorial debut, The Dancer Upstairs. Fine Line Features scored North American rights to the thriller Cherish and ThinkFilm paid more than $1 million for the rights to Gus Van Sant's Gerry, starring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck.

THE TRUTH HURTS
Fox's The X-Files will be ending its run after nine seasons, series creator Chris Carter told reporters Wednesday. "It's the ninth inning. We want to go out on top," Carter told Variety. "We wanted to go out as a strong show." The series finale will air in May.
What I don't understand is why Carter things that they are "going out on top." The X- Files hasn't been on top since before we knew what "Whitewater" was.
CD creator Philips is blasting the record labels over copy protected discs.
