Ant-Man and the Wasp scales up to $76 million opening weekend

Two tiny heroes are making a sizable impression on the box office this weekend.

Disney and Marvel’s stature-shifting superhero sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp is on track to debut with about $76 million in ticket sales from 4,206 theaters in the U.S. and Canada, dethroning Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and continuing Marvel’s incredible hot streak.

Ant-Man and the Wasp marks the 20th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and each installment has opened at No. 1. While fellow MCU movies Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War both scored historic openings earlier this year, Ant-Man and the Wasp is a smaller-scaled affair that should still keep the mega-franchise’s momentum going. The opening is in line with industry estimates, which ranged from $70 million to $85 million, and it eclipses the original Ant-Man, which bowed to $57.2 million in 2015. Overseas, the sequel will add an estimated $85 million this weekend (from 48 percent of the marketplace).

Starring Paul Rudd as Ant-Man/Scott Lang and Evangeline Lilly as the Wasp/Hope van Dyne, Ant-Man and the Wasp finds the heroes trying to rescue Hope’s mother (played by Michelle Pfeiffer) from the quantum realm, while also battling an intangible opponent (Hannah John-Kamen) and dodging the feds. Peyton Reed returned to direct the film, which reportedly cost about $162 million to produce.

Critics’ reviews for Ant-Man and the Wasp were generally positive, and audiences gave it an A-minus CinemaScore. The next MCU movie on the calendar is Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson; it opens March 8.

This week’s other newcomer, Universal and Blumhouse’s dystopian thriller The First Purge, opened Wednesday (on Independence Day) and is headed for a five-day total of about $31.1 million, in line with expectations. The Friday-Sunday frame accounts for $17.2 million of that amount, good for fourth place.

Arriving as the fourth entry in the Purge series, The First Purge is a prequel depicting the origins of an annual night of state-sanctioned lawlessness. Gerard McMurray directed, and Y’Lan Noel stars. Reviews were mixed, and moviegoers gave it a B-minus CinemaScore.

Rounding out the top five this weekend are Disney and Pixar’s animated hit Incredibles 2 ($29 million), which is edging out last week’s top earner, Universal’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ($28.6 million), and in fifth place, Sony’s borderland thriller Sicario: Day of the Soldado ($7.3 million).

On the specialty front, Roadside Attractions and Miramax’s Whitney Houston documentary Whitney is poised to open with about $1.3 million from 452 locations (a per-theater average of $2,758), and Annapurna Pictures’ outré sci-fi comedy Sorry To Bother You (directed by Boots Riley) is on track to debut with $717,302 from 16 theaters (a per-theater average of $44,831).

According to ComScore, overall box office is up 9 percent year-to-date. Check out the July 6-8 figures below.

Avengers: End Game. I like it!!

Marvel cinematographer possibly accidentally reveals ‘Avengers 4’ title

A Marvel cinematographer has accidentally revealed the title of the next Avengers movie, according to reports.

According to editors at website Omega Underground, Trent Opaloch, the cinematographer on Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Infinity War, may have accidentally revealed the title for the upcoming Avengers movie.

The next instalment in the Marvel franchise has been referred to as Avengers 4, but a screengrab taken from Opaloch’s website on Sunday has the film listed as Avengers: End Game.

And perhaps after a loud whisper in his ear from Marvel boss Kevin Feige, Opaloch later revised his earlier website entry to amend the reference from Avengers: End Game to a simple Avengers 4.

The rumoured title is reportedly based on a line uttered by Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange in Infinity War, and matches one which was previously rumoured by fans and dismissed by the movie’s directors Anthony and Joe Russo.

In a recent interview with Uproxx, the Russo brothers dismissed chatter that the title of the next film appears in any of Infinity War’s dialogue.

When asked whether the name would come from the earlier film, Joe responded with a simple “No.”

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom rules the box office again

A squad of elderly hoopers and a vengeful assassin won’t be enough to take down rampaging dinosaurs this weekend.

Universal Pictures’ blockbuster sequel Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is on track to earn an estimated $60 million in ticket sales at 4,485 theaters in the U.S. and Canada, topping the box office for a second frame while holding off solid debuts from Uncle Drew and Sicario: Day of the Soldado.

For Fallen Kingdom, that number represents a fairy steep decline of 59 percent from its first weekend, and it brings the film’s domestic total to about $264.8 million after 10 days in theaters. Overseas, the film will add about $56.1 million, for an international total of about $667.6 million and a combined worldwide haul of about $932.4 million.

Directed by J.A. Bayona (The Impossible) and made for about $170 million, Fallen Kingdom finds returning stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard trying to rescue an island full of cloned dinosaurs from an impending volcanic eruption. B.D. Wong, Jeff Goldblum, Rafe Spall, Justice Smith and Daniella Pineda costar.

Critics’ reviews were mixed, though audiences gave Fallen Kingdom an A-minus CinemaScore. A third Jurassic World movie is slated for the summer of 2021.

Holding steady in second place is Disney and Pixar’s animated superhero sequel Incredibles 2, with an estimated $45.5 million in its third weekend. Through Sunday, the Brad Bird-directed movie will have grossed about $439.7 million domestically and $207.1 million in foreign markets.

n a battle for third place, Sony’s borderland thriller Sicario: Day of the Soldado and Lionsgate’s basketball comedy Uncle Drew are both exceeding expectations, with the former film grossing about $19 million from 3,055 theaters and the latter taking in about $15.5 million from 2,742 theaters.

Soldado is the follow-up to 2015’s Sicario, which earned $15.1 million in its first weekend in wide release and finished its run with $84.9 million at the global box office. Directed by Directed by Stefano Sollima (taking the reins from Denis Villeneuve) and once again written by Taylor Sheridan, Soldado stars Benicio del Toro as a lawyer-turned-hitman who teams up with the U.S. government on a black-ops mission to combat Mexican drug cartels.

Reviews for Soldado were mixed to positive, while audiences gave it a B CinemaScore.

Uncle Drew, which originated as a Pepsi ad campaign, stars NBA All-Star Kyrie Irving as a grizzled streetball legend who rounds up his old buddies (played by Shaquille O’Neal, Reggie Miller, Lisa Leslie, and Nate Robinson) to help an everyman coach (Lil Rel Howery) win a tournament. Charles Stone III directed the movie, which garnered mixed to positive reviews and a A CinemaScore.

Further down in the top 10, Fox International Pictures’ Sanju is arriving with an estimated $2.6 million from just 356 theaters, good for eighth place. The biopic about Indian actor Sanjay Dutt is directed by Rajkumar Hirani and stars Ranbir Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, and Manisha Koirala.

According to ComScore, overall box office is up 9.3 percent year-to-date, and summer box office is up 15.3 percent. Check out the June 29-July 1 figures below.

Cineplex’s latest idea: movie theatre snacks delivered to your home

Some Canadians with a hankering for movie theatre popcorn without the trek to a cinema are in luck.

Cineplex Inc. has started to offer delivery of concession stand snacks — popcorn, hot dogs, candy, nachos and soft drinks — to customers in 60 communities throughout Ontario, Alberta, B.C. and Quebec this week.

One offering under the plan, which the company dubs its ‘Cineplex Movie Night In Combo’ would see anyone who signs up get a HD movie rental, two medium popcorns, two medium candies and two medium drinks for $28.99. All of which they would consume without ever leaving their home.

The offering, a partnership with Uber Eats, comes months after Cineplex tested delivery in university towns in southern Ontario and as the entertainment giant ramped up its efforts to diversify its revenue beyond movie screenings, whose profits can be unpredictable because they are dependent on the strength of the films studios roll out.

To combat that unpredictability and the popularity of on-demand streaming services that are increasingly convincing film lovers to stay home to watch movies, Cineplex has expanded concession stand products, offered VIP seating and opened Rec Room gaming bars and a Playdium arcade centre in Ontario.

Those ventures have drawn in a young demographic that is also likely be a fan of the delivery service, Cineplex chief executive Ellis Jacob said.

“I know when I was studying for exams, I didn’t want to leave (the house), but I still wanted a treat,” he said. “This allows you to do that or if you’ve got little kids and you want to watch something at home, you can do that and have the goodies at the same time.”

The service is available in cities including Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa and Montreal, but parts of downtown Toronto will be left out of the offering because some theatre concession stands aren’t easily accessible for Uber Eats drivers.

If there is demand for an expansion to unserviced areas, Jacob said Cineplex will look at using its Rec Room gaming bars and head office as hubs for delivery or consider opening a distribution centre.

For now, he said the company will focus on Ontario, Alberta, B.C. and Quebec because of their high populations and the company’s large network of theatres there.

The foods Cineplex will deliver from theatres in those provinces will be packaged for deliveries. Popcorn will be double-bagged and sealed at the top, so kernels don’t spill out in transit and hot dogs will be wrapped in foil and dropped off alongside condiments in small packages.

On top of concession stand treats, customers will also be able to order combos that include movie rentals from the Cineplex Store.

If the service takes off, Jacob said delivery customers might see new treats crop up for delivery.

Mel B now says Spice Girls reunion is ‘finally’ happening: ‘We are touring!’

What we want (what we really, really want) is a Spice Girls reunion, but it’s been difficult keeping track of it all. There was some speculation and reports back in February, but then Victoria Beckham shot down that chatter. Now, Melanie Brown (a.k.a. Mel B) has lifted our spirits once more when she appeared on the Today show’s Kathie Lee & Hoda segment to definitively declare, “We are touring!”

“I still do [love performing]. I’m the only one that keeps on saying, ‘We’re gonna be performing,’ which we are gonna be performing,” Brown told Hoda Kotb. “Finally they got it together.”

But wait a minute! What about Beckham’s comments? Kotb brought up how Posh Spice told Vogue, “I’m not going on tour. The girls aren’t going on tour.”

“She’s always bloody saying that,” Brown said. “Stop it! We are touring!” In case that wasn’t clear, she added, “Yes, we are going to be doing performances together, for sure.”

TMZ had initially reported in February that the Spice Girls would embark on an international tour beginning in the U.K. and migrating to the U.S. It was around this time that Brown got together with Beckham, Melanie Chisholm, Emma Bunton, and Geri Halliwell for “a fun lunch.” The photo they took from that day and posted online sparked further speculation.

Brown admitted to Kotb on Wednesday that she has been talking about a reunion for a long time. While appearing on talk-show The Real, she had confirmed the ladies are indeed back with Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller.

“We have enjoyed a wonderful afternoon catching up and reminiscing about the amazing times we have spent together,” the group said in a previous statement to EW through Beckham’s publicist, Jo Milloy. “We are always overwhelmed at how much interest there is across the whole world for the Spice Girls. The time now feels right to explore some incredible new opportunities together.”

Prince Estate, Sony Ink Distribution Deal For 35 Albums

The Prince estate and Sony Music Entertainment have signed a distribution deal for 35 of Prince’s previously released album titles.

The catalog included in the deal will be distributed by Legacy Recordings, a division of Sony.

According to details announced Wednesday, albums originally released between 1995 and 2010 will be available for worldwide distribution this year, including The Gold Experience, Emancipation and 3121.

Legacy will distribute more of Prince’s music in the future. Music from the 1978 to 1996 era will be available in the U.S. starting in 2021.

Prince estate entertainment adviser Troy Carter says Sony’s deep knowledge of Prince’s music makes it an ideal partner to release his work and give fans “more great music from Prince.”

Prince died in 2016 from an accidental fentanyl overdose.

Joe Jackson, Jackson Family Patriarch, Dead at 89

Joe Jackson, the strict patriarch who took Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 out of the Gary, Indiana ghettos and made them internationally famous, died early Wednesday morning at the age of 89. Jackson had been battling terminal cancer in a Los Angeles hospital. Brian Oxman, a close friend of Jackson’s, confirmed Jackson’s death to Rolling Stone.

“We are deeply saddened by Mr. Jackson’s passing and extend our heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Katherine Jackson and the family,” John Branca and John McClain, co-executors of the Estate of Michael Jackson, said in a statement. “Joe was a strong man who acknowledged his own imperfections and heroically delivered his sons and daughters from the steel mills of Gary, Indiana to worldwide pop superstardom. Mr. Jackson’s contributions to the history of music are enormous. We had developed a warm relationship with Joe in recent years and will miss him tremendously.”

“I am saddened to hear of the passing of Joseph Jackson,” Motown Record founder Berry Gordy said in a statement. “I remember back when he brought his talented kids to Motown. I could see that they were well disciplined, and that he and his wife, Katherine, had instilled in them a very strong work ethic. Without Joe ’s early commitment to his family, the world may have never experienced the musical gift of the Jackson 5 and the world’s greatest entertainer, Michael Jackson. The entire Gordy family extends our condolences to all the Jacksons, their friends and fans.”

If not for Jackson, who worked as a craneman in a Gary steel mill, the Jackson 5 almost certainly wouldn’t have signed to Motown Records in the Sixties and made iconic hits such as “I Want You Back” and “ABC.” And if not for Jackson, who was still managing his son when “Off the Wall” came out in 1979, Michael Jackson may have never become the King of Pop. During the Thriller era, Michael would split with his father, eventually accusing him of severe childhood abuse, including beatings with iron cords. Jackson, who demanded that his nine children call him “Joseph,” later clarified in a television interview: “I whipped him with a switch and a belt. I never beat him — you beat somebody with a stick.” Several of his children, including Jermaine, Marlon and Janet, have credited their father’s strictness for keeping them focused and out of trouble.

Born in Dermott, Arkansas, Joseph Walter Jackson suffered his own physical abuse from both parents and teachers. He later moved to Oakland, California to follow his divorced father, but wound up in his mother’s hometown of East Chicago, near Gary. He met Katherine Jackson there and married her in 1949; their first child, Rebbie, was born in 1950. Early on in Northwest Indiana, Joe was in an amateur blues band called the Falcons. As the story goes, his son Tito pulled Joe’s guitar out of the closet and broke a string. After punishing Tito, Joe listened to him play and the family band was born.

Joe Jackson assembled the Jackson 5’s early rehearsals in the living room of their small home at 2300 Jackson Street in Gary, then schmoozed with local promoters, radio DJs, studio owners and record executives to try and get his kids exposure. The group soon signed with a small Gary record label, Steeltown; Jackson hawked their first single, “Big Boy,” out of his car on the streets of Gary. “The more we practiced, the better they got, and I knew that all the trouble I went to would be worth it — my children would be something huge! And I was right,” he wrote in his German-language 2004 memoir Die Jacksons. “Within three years, they were appearing in clubs, and by the end of the Sixties, they were earning so much that I could give up my jobs.”

Joe managed the Jacksons throughout their early years, agreeing to a constrictive Motown deal (later suing the company with his sons), then upgrading to CBS Records in 1975. Many record executives and musicians who worked with him noted that his kids seemed distant or fearful while he was around. In his biography Moonwalk, Michael wrote, “He looked out for both our interests and his. To this day I’m so thankful he didn’t try to take all our money for himself the way so many parents of child stars have. . . . But I still don’t know him, and that’s sad for a son who hungers to understand his own father.”

Michael, according to J. Randy Taraborrelli’s biography The Magic, The Madness, The Whole Story, never forgave his father for allegedly cheating on his wife Katherine with a number of women, including one who gave birth to his daughter Joh’Vonnie in 1974. Father and son had a post-Thriller falling-out in the pages of Billboard: Joe suggested Michael needed “white help” to assist him with CBS execs, and Michael responded by saying he was “color-blind” and “to hear him talk like that turns my stomach.”

In his later years, Joe continued his unique wheeling and dealing to make money for himself and, occasionally, his children. Not long before Michael agreed to what would have been his final arena shows, in London, Joe worked with indie concert promoters to line up a Jackson family concert in Dallas for millions of dollars. He contested Michael’s will, arguing against the legitimacy of estate executors John Branca and John McClain after Michael died in June 2009. (A judge dismissed Jackson’s claim.) Many suggested he was callous by promoting his record label in interviews immediately following Michael’s death. But with Joe Jackson, the bad always came with the good.

“We liked being together and singing together,” Jackson told Soul magazine in 1970, just as “Jacksonmania” was taking off. “It kept the boys interested at home and kept them from running wild in the streets at night. In our neighborhood, lots of children got into trouble — some into bad trouble. I didn’t want that kind of life for my kids.”

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom roars to life with $150 million opening

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is taking a bite out of the box office.

In its opening weekend, the fifth installment in Universal Pictures’ blockbuster franchise about cloned dinosaurs running amok is on track to earn about $150 million in ticket sales from 4,475 theaters in the U.S. and Canada, claiming the No. 1 spot with ease.

That figure exceeds industry projections, which had it in the $130 million to $140 million range, and it marks Universal’s second-highest domestic debut ever (not adjusting for inflation), behind only the first Jurassic World, which bowed to $208.8 million in 2015. Fallen Kingdom is therefore coming in about 28 percent lower than its predecessor, a film that went on to earn $1.67 billion in global ticket sales.

Overseas, Fallen Kingdom will add about $106.7 million this weekend, bringing its international total to $561.5 million. The film started rolling out across the globe two weeks ago.

Arriving 14 years after The Incredibles — which grossed $261.4 million in the U.S. and Canada over its entire run — Incredibles 2 picks up right where the first film left off, with the Parr family fighting to save the day and restore the public’s trust in superheroes. Reviews for have been almost unanimously positive, and audiences gave it an A-plus CinemaScore.

Rounding out the top five this weekend are Warner Bros’. female-led heist movie Ocean’s 8, with about $11.7 million; the same studio’s R-rated comedy Tag, with about $8.2 million; and Fox’s superhero sequel Deadpool 2, with about $5.3 million.

In limited release, Focus Features’ Mister Rogers documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor? will break into the top 10 in its third weekend, with about $1.9 million.

Mike Myers planning another ‘Austin Powers’ sequel

Mike Myers has given fans of his Austin Powers film franchise hope for a new sequel after insisting the chances of another instalment are “looking good”.

The comedy icon has long considered reprising his role as the quirky 1960s spy, and his nemesis Dr. Evil, for a fourth movie, and now, 21 years after the first release, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, the actor’s plans are finally starting to take shape.

Myers was asked about the possibility of another sequel during an appearance on breakfast show Good Morning America, and initially tried to dodge the question.

“I can neither confirm nor deny the existence or non-existence of a movie, should a movie like that exist or not exist,” he quipped.

Dropping the act, he then gave fans an update on the proposed project’s progress.

“It’s looking good, so, we’ll see,” the 55-year-old said.

However, he suggested getting everything in place would take a little while longer, because he has to juggle his career with life as a father of three.

“It takes a lot of time,” Myers shared. “I have three kids now, so the last six years, (have been focused on) three kids under six…”

“Mostly what I try to do is stuff outside my house…!” he joked, admitting raising children with his wife of eight years, Kelly Tisdale, has made him pick less time-consuming gigs.

“I’ve been developing stuff and doing small parts…, just stuff that didn’t keep me far away from my family, so we’ll see what happens,” he added.

One person who will be rooting for Myers’ return as Austin Powers is his eldest kid, six-year-old son Spike, and after telling him all about dad’s movie career when he was young, the boy has since become his father’s biggest devotee.

“We’re at some cottage.. and it was raining and we were under a tent, and he turns to me and says, ‘Dada, can I tell you a secret…? I’m your number one fan!’,” he recalled.

“So we’re walking through New York and there’s like 10 Austin Powers (impersonators), and about five Wayne’s Worlds (sic) and about 25 Dr. Evils, and he’s like, ‘That’s my dad!’ So I think we did the right thing.”

In addition to International Man of Mystery, Myers starred in 1999’s Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Austin Powers in Goldmember in 2002.

The latter two also featured actor Verne Troyer as his Mini-Me. He died in April, aged 49.

‘Roseanne’ spinoff is official — without Roseanne — ABC announces

Welcome back, Conners.

Unwilling to let the working class family and its viewers disappear, ABC has brought back a makeshift “Roseanne” reboot called “The Conners,” rehiring most of the main cast except for its controversial lead, Roseanne Barr.

“We have received a tremendous amount of support from fans of our show, and it’s clear that these characters not only have a place in our hearts, but in the hearts and homes of our audience,” stars John Goodman (Dan), Laurie Metcalf (Jackie), Sara Gilbert (Darlene), Alicia Goranson (Becky) and Michael Fishman (D.J.) said in a joint statement.

“We all came back last season because we wanted to tell stories about the challenges facing a working-class family today. We are so happy to have the opportunity to return with the cast and crew to continue to share those stories through love and laughter.”

The first iteration of the “Roseanne” reboot was axed suddenly after Barr called Valerie Jarrett, the former senior adviser to former President Barack Obama, the baby of the “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes.”

After the cancellation, Barr agreed to waive any financial and creative rights to the spinoff, an agreement that ABC stressed Thursday.

“I regret the circumstances that have caused me to be removed from Roseanne,” she said in a statement. “I agreed to the settlement in order that 200 jobs of beloved cast and crew could be saved, and I wish the best for everyone involved.”

Executive producer Tom Werner also said he was “grateful to have reached this agreement to keep our team working as we continue to explore stories of the Conner family.”

It’s unclear how exactly Roseanne Conner will be killed off — either literally or figuratively — but the show promises to “follow the Conner family who, after a sudden turn of events, are forced to face the daily struggles of life in Lanford in a way they never have before.”

In the season finale, the matriarch was undergoing long-awaited knee surgery, so an operating room accident could easily solve the casting issue.

“The Conners” will slide into “Roseanne’s” time slot on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. in the fall.
