Happy Anniversary, to The Doors!!

The Doors’ Robby Krieger Talks 50th Anniversary Plans, Re-Releases & Newly Unearthed Recordings

The Doors’ guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore are eying their famed band’s 50th anniversary in 2017 as an opportunity to do some special things — including their overdue tribute to late keyboardist Ray Manzarek.

“There’ll be something cool happening,” guitarist Krieger told Billboard. “I can’t say exactly what yet, but we never did get our tribute to Ray thing going, so it’ll be part of that, for sure, and probably for Jim [Morrison], too.”

The Doors actually formed in 1965 but released their first two albums during 1967. Morrison died in 1971, while Manzarek passed away in 2013 after he and Krieger had reunited to play Doors music under several different names — mostly owing to legal maneuvering with Densmore and the Morrison estate.

But the guitarist and drummer reconciled in the wake of Manzarek’s death and are looking forward to giving the Doors its proper 50th anniversary due.

“Forty [years] was pretty weird. Forty-eight’s pretty weird, too, so I don’t think about it too much,” Krieger said with a chuckle. “For some reason people still love the Doors’ music and I can tell you that it’s still fun to play. I think that’s a good indicator right there; If people still like to play it then people still like to listen to it. I’ve played on a lot of records that I wouldn’t even care about hearing again or playing live, but for some reason the Doors songs are still fun to play.”

While those plans are being formulated, the Doors camp recently dipped into the vaults again for something fans have been asking about for years — the re-release of 1971’s Other Voices and 1972’s Full Circle, the two albums the group recorded after Morrison’s death. Together, the albums capture a band reeling from the loss but also resolute to carry on and, perhaps, remind fans of what was often eclipsed by the cult of personality surrounding the shaman-like frontman Morrison.

“That was kind of a weird time,” Krieger recalled, “because it’s really all we knew how to do. Obviously we weren’t going to replace Jim, ’cause it wouldn’t be fair to try and do that. So we had to make the decision — Do we just give up and go our own ways, or, we had this great band musically and at that point we still got along really well and so we decided, ‘Hey, let’s just record this stuff and see how it turns out.'”

More than 40 years later, Krieger — who shared lead vocals on the two albums with Manzarek — is generally pleased with what he hears.

“I think they sound pretty good,” he said. “It sounds really good to me, in fact. Of course, I kinda hate to hear my own voice, always, but after not hearing it for so long I was pleasantly surprised. We had kinda just let [the albums] flounder for so long; we really didn’t think there was much of a market for them, even though they sold fairly well back then. But little by little we’ve been getting a lot of requests for those two albums, people saying ‘Hey, what about Other Voices and Full Circle?’ And after awhile we realized there was quite a market for them, so we finally talked to [Rhino Records] and got it going. That was, like, 10 years ago, and it took us this long to get around to it.”

The Doors’ vaults, of course, have been prodigious with previously unreleased live recordings and compilations. The Doors camp also recently acquired a new batch of tapes from a collector that are currently being investigated to see what might be culled. “We’re hoping there’s some good stuff in there, but I’m not holding my breath,” said Krieger, who’s also working on a new album with his current band Jam Kitchen. “I really don’t know what it is. I don’t know if they’re multi-tracks or two-tracks, but they’re definitely tape. If there’s anything worthwhile you can bet we’ll do something with them.”

Box office report: Hotel Transylvania 2 earns the biggest September opening ever

Hotel Transylvania 2 drew blood at the box office this weekend, earning an estimated $47.5 million and setting the new record for the biggest September opening of all time.

The sequel to Genndy Tartakovsky’s animated Dracula adventure shattered the $42.5 million record set by the first one in 2012, and Hotel Transylvania 2 (starring Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, and Selena Gomez) earned an A- CinemaScore. Not only did Hotel Transylvania 2 earn the biggest ever September opening, but it’s also Sony Animation’s biggest opening of all time and the biggest opening Sony has had all year. When final numbers come in on Monday, Hotel Transylvania 2 could also end up as the biggest Sandler opening of all time, as it’s only about $100,000 away from his current record-holder, The Longest Yard, which opened to $47.6 million in 2005.

The Intern, starring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway, also made a solid debut, earning an estimated $18.2 million. Director Nancy Meyers’ first film since 2009 also snagged an A- CinemaScore, coming in second place, and The Intern drew a primarily female, older audience.

Everest, on the other hand, fell a little short of expectations. Last weekend, Baltasar Kormákur’s climbing adventure opened on IMAX and premium large-format screens, earning $7.2 million, and while Everest was expected to earn between $15 and $17 million when it went wide this weekend, it only made an estimated $13.1 million. Everest’s 10-day domestic total is now at an estimated $23.1 million.

Holdovers Black Mass and Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials rounded out the top five. Scorch Trials saw a steeper second-weekend drop than the first Maze Runner, falling 54 percent, but it still earned $14 million, bringing its domestic total to $51.7 million. The White Bulger biopic Black Mass earned $11.5 million in its second weekend, and its domestic total is now at $42.6 million.

Outside of the top five, this weekend’s other wide release marked the return of another big director: Eli Roth. The Green Inferno, Roth’s first directorial feature in eight years, made $3.5 million.

Here are this weekend’s top five at the box office:

1. Hotel Transylvania 2 — $47.5 million
2. The Intern — $18.2 million
3. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials — $14 million
4. Everest — $13.1 million
5. Black Mass — $11.5 million

Kenny Rogers Announces Retirement

Kenny Rogers announced his retirement during an appearance on the “Today” show this morning, with the promise that he would play one final worldwide tour before calling it quits.

The Country Music Hall of Fame member, who has sold more than 120 million records, released his latest holiday album – Once Again It’s Christmas – today. But Rogers had more on his mind than just his new LP.

Rogers told “Today” that he’s stepping away from the music business so he can spend more time with his family.

An announcement from his PR rep notes that details about Rogers’ final world tour will be revealed in the coming months. The last stop of the tour will take place at the “Today” show.

“I’ve had an incredible career,” Rogers said. “More than I’ve ever dreamed. And thanks to you guys who’ve supported me all these years. I wanted you to hear it from me. Not many people get to see the end of the rainbow. And I think I have. I think I’m have the beauty of this career and the beauty of getting to know you guys daily, out on the road and watching you kids grow up with me. And doing my Christmas tour every year.

“And as hard as it is to leave, I will tell you this. Younger and earlier in my career and in my book I wrote there’s a fine line between being selfish and being driven and I think I crossed that line a lot when I was younger and I didn’t get a chance to spend a lot of time with my older boys and I regret that now. And I’ve decided that my goal now is to stay home and help Wanda raise Justin and Jordan and be as much of an influence on them as my mother and father were on me, because that’s what parents are for. And I wanted you to hear that from me.

“I love all of you. I love the way you’ve treated me. You’ve always been respectful and I will miss you dearly but I must go be with my boys. Goodbye.”

Amy Schumer Book ‘The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo’ Scores Massive 8-Figure Deal

Fresh off her Emmy win, Amy Schumer has inked an eight-figure deal with Simon & Schuster imprint Gallery Books for The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo, a funny memoir, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

The book is said to be a series of comedic essays looking at the Emmy-winning star’s family, childhood and feminist politics. Similar books by Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling and others have been reliable bestsellers. Initial sales of Fey’sBossypants exceeded two million copies. There are few sure things in publishing but a funny book from Schumer would be on the short list of guaranteed bestsellers. Secrecy surrounding the project was tight. Editors had to go to the offices of Schumer’s book agent David Kuhn to read the proposal. Eight publishers bid on the project.

Entertainment Weekly reported the winning bid was in the $8 million to $10 million range, echoing early speculation among publishing insiders about the book’s value. Sources tell THR that bidding topped $6.5 million on Monday afternoon before the auction’s final round of offers.

Schumer’s reps did not respond to THR’s request for comment.

Fey received a $6 million advance for her book. Lena Dunham got $3.7 million for Not That Kind of Girl. Aziz Ansari got $3.5 million for Modern Romance, which was a New York Times bestseller when it published in June.

Schumer is having quite a year. She won an Emmy Sunday for best variety sketch series for her Comedy Central show Inside Amy Schumer, which has been renewed for a fourth season.

Earlier this year, her film Trainwreck, which she wrote and starred in, was a breakout hit for Universal, earning $137.7 million worldwide. The Judd Apatow-helmed project was a semi-autobiographical story, and seems to have whet the public’s appetite for more stories from the comedian.

Schumer is attached to star in a comedy for Fox, which has Jonathan Levine attached to direct. Schumer and her sister, Kim Caramele, reworked an initial script by The Heat’s Katie Dippold. It centers on a mother and daughter who find themselves kidnapped while on vacation in Brazil.

Schumer is also writing a screenplay with her new BFF, Jennifer Lawrence. They two actresses would play sisters in the film.

Schumer was repped by David Kuhn of Kuhn Projects on the book deal. She is also repped by UTA and Schreck Rose.

Bring it on, boys!!

Keith Richards Confirms New Rolling Stones Album

Keith Richards told iHeartRadio Tuesday night that the Rolling Stones had a recent group meeting in London and made “definite plans” to record a new album. The guitarist elaborated on those plans in a new interview with Rolling Stone. “[A new album] looks closer,” he said. “Don’t know where, don’t know when yet …We had a little chat. We were just saying, ‘We gotta get in the studio right? Right?’ ‘That’s agreed. Okay, boys, that’s agreed.’ Where, when – [we] scratch our heads.”

A spokesperson for the group was not immediately available for comment.

When exactly the band will record remains an open question. “I would say off the top of my head after the South American tour in February,” Richard tells Rolling Stone. “But you never know. We might try to get into the studio before Christmas. I think that’s sort of doubtful, with Christmas being Christmas, all that buildup. But at the same time, it’s definitely in the works.”

The Rolling Stones haven’t released an album of new material since 2005’s A Bigger Bang. Earlier this year, frontman Mick Jagger told Rolling Stone he was unsure about a new Stones album. “It would be very nice and I’ve got a lot of new songs and songs I’ve written over the last couple of years,” he said. “I’ve done really good demos for all of them, which I would love to record. So, let’s hope so.”

The Stones reconvened in 2012 for a 50th anniversary tour after taking a five-year break from the road. They recorded the new tracks “Doom and Gloom” and “One More Shot” for the GRRR! compilation, but the vast majority of their time has been devoted to road work. The group wrapped up its 15-show Zip Code tour in Quebec City in July.

Right now, Richards is focused on promoting his upcoming solo album Crosseyed Heart, which is set for release on Friday. He has talked about supporting it with his first solo tour since 1993, but has yet to reveal any concrete touring plans.

CCMA Awards 2015: Gord Bamford takes home 3 awards

Canada’s reigning king of country Gord Bamford proved once again why he wears the crown as the Canadian Country Music Association Awards returned to Halifax on Sunday for the first time in 33 years.

Bamford was the night’s big winner, taking home three awards including Male Artist of the Year and Songwriter and Single of the Year for his song Where a Farm Used To Be.

The 39-year-old Bamford, who was born in Australia but moved to Canada as a young boy, said he attributes his continued success to his hard-working attitude, instilled by his family upbringing in Alberta.

“I was always taught to work really hard and be very respectful to people, but told that when you go do something, try to do it at the best of your ability. That’s all I’ve tried to do,” said Bamford in an oversized black cowboy hat, just after debuting his new single Don’t Let Her Be Gone for thousands.

“I really didn’t expect any of this tonight… I’m actually really shocked that I’m standing up here, but at the same time, every time it happens it’s the best thing ever. It never gets old.”

It’s the third year in a row Bamford has cleaned up at the awards — he won Male Artist of the Year and Single of the Year honours in 2014.

For his first CCMA ever, former Default rocker-turned country singer Dallas Smith took home the coveted Album of the Year award for Lifted.

“I’m pretty proud of the songs we recorded,” said the 37-year-old British Columbia native, who opened the show with a rousing rendition of his song Cheap Seats with help from a local drumline.

“To take home that big award and it be my first one, I’m happy it’s happened this way.”

Jess Moskaluke, 25, won Female Artist of the Year for the second year in a row. The pop-country singer from Langenburg, Sask., is gearing up for the release of her new EP Kiss Me Quiet later this month.

“I cannot believe that this happened,” said an emotional Moskaluke in a floor-length red dress as she accepted the award. “You have no idea how much this means to me as a girl from small town Saskatchewan.”

The Nova Scotia-based Dean Brody, who was poised to win big having received seven nominations, won Video of the Year for Upside Down.

The 40-year-old B.C.-born singer, who moved to Nova Scotia six years ago after a stint in Nashville, said it felt great winning the award in his new home.

“We really feel embraced by the East Coast community,” said Brody, whose young family currently lives in Windsor, N.S., but will soon move to the Halifax area. “It’s just a great community and it suites me as a person. I’m hoping we’re here to stay.”

Scottish-born veteran vocalist Johnny Reid claimed the fans’ choice award for the sixth time in the past seven years. He said being recognized by the people who listen to your music is an honour.

“The bigger thing for me is to stand up there and say thanks to them,” said Reid, standing out against his cowboy hat-clad colleagues in a black suit and tie. “It was a very humbling experience for me, yet again.”

Hurry up Oscar films!! I’m dying to go to the movies again!!!

Box office report: The Perfect Guy edges out The Visit to win the weekend

This weekend saw the debut of two new PG-13 rated thrillers, and while The Perfect Guy and The Visit were both predicted to debut between $15 million and $17 million, both exceeded expectations, ending the weekend with more than $25 million apiece.

The Perfect Guy opened to an estimated $26.7 million, narrowly beating out M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit, which made $25.7 million. It’s a close enough race that things could change when final numbers come in on Monday, but if The Perfect Guy holds on to the crown, it’ll mark the fifth weekend in a row that a movie starring African-American actors has topped the box office. War Room won Labor Day weekend, and before that, Straight Outta Compton was the No. 1 movie for three straight weekends.

The Perfect Guy stars Sanaa Lathan as a lobbyist who, after leaving her boyfriend (Morris Chestnut), strikes up a passionate affair with a seemingly perfect stranger (Michael Ealy). Distributed by Sony’s Screen Gems, Perfect Guy snagged an A- CinemaScore. Meanwhile, The Visit, Shyamalan’s first feature film since 2013’s After Earth, earned a B-. Produced by Jason Blum, The Visit follows two children whose visit to their grandparents’ house quickly turns sinister.

War Room earned another $7.4 million this weekend, placing third. The faith-based drama from brothers Alex and Stephen Kendrick has been one of the surprise hits of late summer, and its domestic total is now just shy of $40 million. The adaptation of Bill Bryson’s book A Walk In The Woods, starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte, took fourth with $4.7 million, bringing its domestic total to just below $20 million.

Rounding out the top five, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation squeezed past Straight Outta Compton to spend its seventh weekend in the top five, earning $4.2 million to Compton’s $4.1 million. To date, the latest Ethan Hunt adventure is just shy of a $190 million domestic total, while the N.W.A. biopic has grossed more than $155 million domestically.

This weekend’s other new wide release was 90 Minutes in Heaven, another faith-based drama. Starring Hayden Christensen and Kate Bosworth, 90 Minutes tells the story of a man who was pronounced dead after a car crash, only to return to life an hour and a half later. It debuted in 838 theaters to an estimated $2.2 million.

Here are this weekend’s top five at the box office:

1. The Perfect Guy — $26.7 million
2. The Visit — $25.7 million
3. War Room — $7.4 million
4. A Walk In The Woods — $4.7 million
5. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation — $4.2 million

Can’t wait to hear it…and see the movie!!!

Sam Smith Records James Bond ‘Spectre’ Song

It’s official: Sam Smith has recorded the new Bond theme song.

The British soul singer’s upcoming release “Writing’s On The Wall” will feature in the upcoming James Bond film, Spectre.

“This is one of the highlights of my career,” comments Smith in a statement. “I am honored to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it.”

Smith — who has co-written the title song with regular collaborator and fellow Grammy Award winner Jimmy Napes — becomes the first British male solo artist to win the coveted job since Tom Jones recorded “Thunderball” for the 1965 movie of the same name. Capitol Records will release “Writing’s On The Wall” on Sept. 25.

Smith has had an up–and-down year. Early on, he shone at the Grammy Awards where he performed “Stay With Me” and took home four trophies. But a vocal cord hemorrhage in April forced him to cancel shows and take an extended rest. He’s since made a full recovery.

With “Writing’s On The Wall”, Smith joins an elite circle of recording artists who’ve contributed songs for the enduring Bond series, a group that includes Adele, Duran Duran, Paul McCartney & Wings, Madonna, Shirley Bassey and Tina Turner.

Today’s announcement (Smith dropped a major clue on Monday) ends months of speculation in which the likes of Ed Sheeran, Ellie Goulding, Adele, Lana Del Rey, Lorde, Noel Gallagher and even Radiohead were tipped as candidates to helm the new Bond song.

Spectre, the 24th film in the James Bond franchise, will be released Oct. 26 in the U.K. and Nov. 6 in the U.S.
