I’ve honestly never heard of the guy before, but I wish him well.

Meet The Daily Show’s New Host

Trevor Noah! You know Trevor Noah, the 31-year-old South African comedian who only made his first appearance on The Daily Show in December. The rumor had been going around all weekend and was confirmed by Comedy Central this morning. Noah, who speaks six languages, has been doing stand-up internationally for years, and his act tends to focus on issues of race and international relations. His first segment on The Daily Show was about America’s perception of Africa, emphasizing that many American cities are in worse shape than African ones, joking, “I never thought I’d be more afraid of police in America than in South Africa.”

This news comes a little less than two months after Jon Stewart’s announcement he’d be leaving the show he’s been hosting since 1999. For anyone following the story, it seemed Comedy Central didn’t have an easy time finding a replacement. John Oliver, the correspondent most prepared to take over, had left the year before to host his own comedy-news show. And since Stewart’s news, other current correspondents or contributors have also left the show or explicitly said they didn’t want the job. Not to mention that outside of The Daily Show, there is a dearth of prominent young political comedians.

A start date has not been announced.

George R.R. Martin Will Sit Out Season 6 of Game of Thrones

George R.R. Martin revealed on his blog this weekend that he won’t be contributing to Game of Thrones’ sixth season on HBO.

“Writing a season six script would cost me a month’s work on Winds [of Winter], and maybe as much as six weeks, and I cannot afford that,” he wrote.

The author already said he was sitting out season five, which is a bummer, because he usually pens at least one episode per season. But hey, everybody kvetching about the guy’s slow writing progress has finally gotten what they’ve wished for — no distractions. Or so it seems. It sounds like Martin’s still juggling half a dozen projects, plus some appearances (which may or may not get canceled).

Woo hoo!! April is almost here!! We’ve made it through the dumping ground for another year!!

Box office report: Home overperforms with $54 million debut

The fight for No. 1 at this weekend’s box office wasn’t much of a battle: Home took home the prize by a longshot with $54 million—almost $20 million more than Get Hard’s $34.6 million debut.

Home overperformed, but that’s not surprising given the year’s lack of PG-rated offerings so far: The last big family-friendly debut was The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, which premiered more than a month ago on Feb. 6. Combine the lack of fresh new family movies and the bright-and-cheery marketing campaign for Home, and you get a high-performing DreamWorks debut.

But just because Get Hard didn’t get No. 1 doesn’t mean it failed: With $34.6 million, Get Hard is the first Will Ferrell-led film that’s debuted with more than $30 million since 2010’s The Other Boys. It also made considerably more than Kevin Hart’s latest feature, The Wedding Ringer, which opened in January with $20.6 million.

Insurgent, now in its second week, dropped 57 percent to $22.1 million. This is comparable to the first Divergent film’s performance: That one dropped 53 percent between its first and second weeks. Although Insurgent has been making a bit less than Divergent, it’s obvious there’s still a strong audience for the YA adaptation.

There’s also a lot of continued love for Cinderella, a live-action Disney remake that’s been performing similarly to Maleficent, another live-action Disney film, since its debut. It dropped nearly 50 percent in its third week, and continues to be a solid commercial success for Disney.

And the No. 5 spot goes to It Follows, a well-reviewed horror film that expanded from 32 to 1,218 theaters this weekend and brought in a healthy $4 million.

1. Home — $54 million
2. Get Hard — $34.6 million
3. Insurgent — $22.1 million
4. Cinderella — $17.5 million
5. It Follows — $4 million

Beastie Boys

I still miss them every day and hope we get to hear what’s in the vault somewhere down the road.

Ad-Rock confirms Beastie Boys “are done,” but still have lots of unreleased music “in the vault”

Come this weekend, Beastie Boys fans will be able to see one Adam Horovitz, aka Ad-Rock, on the big screen. The MC has a starring role in Noah Baumbach’s latest project, the LCD Soundsystem-scored film While We’re Young, appearing alongside Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts. To celebrate the movie’s release, Ad-Rock sat down with GQ for an insightful new interview.

Among the most interesting tidbits discussed, Ad-Rock confirmed what many had already surmised after Adam “MCA” Yauch tragically passed away in 2012 tragic passing: the Beastie Boys are officially no more. “We’re done,” he said. “Adam Yauch started the band. It’s not like a thing where we could continue without him.”

MCA’s absence is not only felt within the confines of the hip-hop group; Ad-Rock noted how he still misses him on a personal level, saying, “…Adam was one of my best friends; I saw him more than I saw my whole family,” adding, “You know, me, Adam, and Mike were together every day, recording, touring, as friends. And so: huge hole.”

MCA’s passing has also led him to contemplate death — or rather, how one can never be properly ready to face it: “You can never prepare yourself for this. I feel like, maybe when you’re an old person, you can. I don’t know how that comes off, but I feel like, when you’re old, you know it’s happening. You know what I mean? Your brother or your sister’s gonna go. Your best friends are probably already gone. All of this — you’re wrapping it up, so it all makes sense. But when you’re, you know, fortysomething, you never really — you don’t expect it to actually happen.”

Despite the end of the Beastie Boys, Ad-Rock revealed that there is a bunch of previously unreleased material “in the vault” that he hopes to someday unearth. He said most of it is instrumental “like, hours and hours of, like, really bad jamming. Which is awful to think about, but some of it’s really funny,” and “then there’s a lot of stuff of us talking in the middle of it, which is priceless. We were just really stoned, talking about, like, where we should get food, or Cirque du Soleil or some shit.”

Elsewhere in the interview, he talks about his life with wife and punk rock veteran Kathleen Hanna, who has been battling Lyme disease; his future in the film industry; and his forthcoming memoir written with Mike D. Check out a few choice excerpts below and/or read the full interview here.

Ad-Rock is trying to adjust to a Beastie Boys-less life:

“It’s a huge deal. And so, you know, it’s probably just taken me time to sit and think and try to figure out what I do next or who I am now or, you know, all of that stuff. Because since high school, I was in this band. And you know, it’s one thing when you’re in a band in high school, but then to have it last for so long — that’s who I am and what I did forever. And so now I’m just trying to figure it out.”

As sad as MCA’s absence has been, Ad-Rock is moved by how the late MC has been remembered:

“Well, you know, all of that stuff made me really happy, that people cared about Adam so much. And there was graffiti all over the world, and it meant a lot. He meant a lot to a lot of people. That’s really nice. That’s rare that that happens: that one of your best friends dies and, internationally, people are freaking out.”

He and Mike D are continuing to work on a memoir, but admits it’s still a ways off:

“My big idea was to have our friends tell the story. And just, you know, we would sort of interject. My best friends have been my best friends since I was a little kid, so they’ve seen everything. And then we started reading it back, and it was really bad. So I was just like,’Me and Mike need to write it, because, you know—no offense to Morrissey’s friends, but you’d rather read what Morrissey is saying than what Morrissey’s friends are saying.’”

The book will reportedly draw on the “weird shit” that has happened to him ever since he became a celebrity, such as:

“I first went to L.A. in ’88 to be in a movie, and I met this guy, Donovan, who turned out to be one of my best friends, lifelong friends. And one of the first nights I got there, he was like,’Oh, there’s this crazy Hollywood party; I want you to come.’ So a bunch of us went to this crazy Hollywood party, and all these — like, the most random celebrities. It was the best way you could be introduced into, like, a Hollywood party. And you know, we’re drinkin’ — it’s this huge house up in the hills somewhere — and everybody’s there, and I’m gettin’ drunk, and it’s like, next thing I know, I turn, I’m on the dance floor, and George Michael’s just standing next to me. I’m like,’This is awesome.’ And then Axl Rose came — like, stepped to me at the party and told me to stop ripping off Led Zeppelin. I’m like,’How am I even — how is this even happening?’ You know, this thing happens to all of us, I would assume: Like, there’s a moment in your life — and I would assume it happens for a lot of different reasons in a lot of different ways, like how you dress and your state of mind or whatever — but there’s this fun time in your life that you’re at, and you kind of always picture yourself that age. So like, I’m 48, but I still kind of think that I’m 22.”

Oooooh!! I would like to hear them all!!

Spice Girls Have ‘Lots and Lots’ of Unreleased Songs, Says Emma Bunton

Back in February, Spice Girls fans got the surprise of a lifetime when four previously unreleased tracks leaked online. As it turns out, there are actually more of those somewhere in the world, according to Baby Spice herself, Emma Bunton.

“There’s lots,” Bunton told UK’s Daily Star. “We recorded lots and lots and lots of songs.”

And while you may have given the leaked tracks a spin or ten and wondered about their backstories, it doesn’t sound like Bunton can reveal any more details: “I have heard about that, yes, but I can’t really talk about those.”

The 20-year anniversary of the group’s massive breakthrough single, “Wannabe,” is getting close. And while Bunton still keeps in touch with her Spice Girls pals (because, you know, girl power and all), she isn’t sure they will reunite in time to celebrate the release. (“Wannabe” dropped in July 1996.)

“I was with Geri and Mel B just recently, we love each other and we love performing together,” she said, “It’s just when the timing is right because we all have our own careers now and we have families, it’s just about getting five schedules together and that’s all it is.”

Iconic ‘Decline of Western Civilization’ Films Finally Get Official Release

Hold on to your pool chairs: All three of Penelope Spheeris’ entertaining, heartbreaking and iconic Decline of Western Civilization documentaries are officially coming to Blu-ray and DVD for the first time in a deluxe box set on June 30th. Shout! Factory will release the four-disc anthology chronicling L.A.’s hardcore punk, hair-metal and gutter-punk phenomena with a 40-page book, extended interviews and a new commentary track by Dave Grohl. Each film has also been given a 2K high-definition restoration, which Spheeris supervised.

“I am so grateful to the fans of these films, and the bands that appeared in them, for their loyalty and patience,” Spheeris, whose directorial credits also include Wayne’s World and Black Sheep, said in a statement. “This is my life’s work, and I like to think that when I go to my grave, The Decline is what I’ll be remembered for.”

The original Decline of Western Civilization came out in 1980 and shined a light on Los Angeles’ nascent hardcore-punk scene, including performances and interviews with Black Flag, X, Circle Jerks, Fear and the Germs, among many others. It captured the intensity of the bands during that period – at a time when Black Flag shows were protested by police – and when it got its premiere at a midnight screening, 300 policemen arrived to quell the thousands-strong crowd.

Its follow-up film – The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years – came eight years later at the height of Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip metal scene, giving a similar treatment to the likes of glam-metal stars Poison and Faster Pussycat, as well as harder-edged artists like Megadeth and Motörhead and hard-rock veterans such as Alice Cooper, Kiss and Aerosmith. It contained memorable scenes of W.A.S.P. guitarist Chris Holmes floating in his mother’s pool while getting drunk and Ozzy Osbourne cooking bacon in a leopard-print robe.

Spheeris then returned a decade later with 1998’s The Decline of Western Civilization Part III, which focused on the tragic lives of homeless gutter punks in the city and contained performances by Naked Aggression and Final Conflict. The movie has never been available on home video. The experience of making the film prompted the director to become a foster parent.

The bonus materials for the Decline films also include interviews with Spheeris by KNAC’s Tawn Mastery and the Academy Film Archive’s Mark Toscano, never-before-seen footage, performances and interviews, the original trailers and an essay by Domenic Priore, who wrote the 2007 book Riot on Sunset Strip.

X-Files returns to TV after 13 years off the air

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will reprise their roles as agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully in a just-confirmed reboot of The X-Files, Fox Broadcasting Company says.

The popular sci-fi series went off the air 13 years ago, taking with it its strange stories of unexplained paranormal drama.

But the cult classic will return to Fox with a limited series of six new episodes, the show’s creator Chris Carter revealed in a statement on Tuesday.

“I think of it as a 13-year commercial break,” said Carter. “The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”

The Vancouver-shot show, which centred on Mulder and Scully’s investigations into mysterious FBI cases, or “X-Files,” won multiple Emmy awards in its nine seasons and inspired two spinoff films.

It also proved to be a major breakout hit for Fox.

“The X-Files was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture,” said Dana Walden and Gary Newman, chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group in a statement to Entertainment Weekly.

“Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as The X-Files, and we’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they’ve been waiting for.”

Production on the new X-Files series is slated to begin this summer.

It’s not clear if the production will return to Vancouver, or if other popular characters, like William B. Davis’s Smoking Man will return in the revived show.

Hurry up April!! I want to go to the cinema again!!

Box Office report: Insurgent surges to the top spot

Insurgent, as expected, took the top spot at this weekend’s box office, but it’s not all good news for the next entry in the YA series.

In its opening weekend, Insurgent took in an estimated $54.03 million domestically and $101 million worldwide. While that number is close to estimates (and still marks a significant opening), it is a tick below its predecessor, Divergent, which opened to $54.6 million.

Unfortunately, the rising box office success of Shailene Woodley in the last year and expanded presence of actors like Miles Teller did little to draw more viewers for the film’s opening. But what may be even more disappointing is another factor—Insurgent opened with 3D screens while Divergent did not. These higher ticket prices and the overall on-par opening weekend suggests Insurgent’s audience was down in the opening.

But Insurgent did usurp the box office throne from last week’s ruler, Cinderella, which held with an estimated $34.49 million in its second weekend. The live-action Disney film now stands at over an estimated $250 million worldwide total.

The top two earners dominated the box office for the weekend, as the other new films performed far below either of them. The Sean Penn starrer The Gunman debuted with only $5.01 million, splitting the action film audience with Run All Night. The Liam Neeson geri-action film took in an estimated $5.12 million over the weekend, narrowly beating out its competitor in estimates.

The weekend’s other wide release, the faith-based Do You Believe?, opened with $4 million. Last year, Pure Flix opened another religion-focused film, God’s Not Dead, against DIvergent. Dead surprisingly took in over $9 million in its opening, but it seems Believe was not able to match Pure Flix’s last Lenten release. That cume earns it the No. 6 spot below Kingsman: The Secret Service, which maintains a spot in the top five in its sixth weekend.

Here’s how the top five played out according to weekend estimates:

1. The Divergent Series: Insurgent — $54.03 million
2. Cinderella — $34.49 million
3. Run All Night — $5.12 million
4. The Gunman — $5.01 million
5. Kingsman: The Secret Service — $4.6 million

In smaller release news, the Al Pacino film Danny Collins opened to an estimated total of about $73,200 from five locations, while It Follows at 32 locations earned an estimated about $352,000.

I want to see it now!! ASAP!!!!

Kurt Cobain Documentary Will Get a Theatrical Release

Brett Morgen’s documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck will receive theatrical runs in Los Angeles, New York and Seattle prior to the film’s May 4 debut on HBO.

The theatrical runs, which qualify the film for the Academy Awards, begin April 24. Montage of Heck will be shown in 72 countries, beginning April 10, prior to its airing on the pay cable network.

“Within 90 days, the whole world will have access to the film,” Morgen told Billboard at South by Southwest. A DVD release of the intimate portrait of the Nirvana singer-songrwriter-guitarist is penciled in for November.

Montage of Heck premiered at the Sundance Film festival and then played Berlin prior to screening at South By this week. Morgen found Wednesday’s SXSW premiere unique. “It’s the only place in the world where the whole audience is from music,” he said, noting knowing laughs came from places in the film that only musicians would see the humor in.
