Dave Grohl wanted Weezer, Barry Manilow duet for ‘Sound City’ album

Dave Grohl has revealed that he wanted to record a song with Barry Manilow and Weezer for the forthcoming Sound City album ‘Real To Reel’.

The star studded ‘Sound City – Real to Reel’ album, which features appearances from big name stars including Paul McCartney, Josh Homme, Trent Reznor, will be released on March 11 and accompanies the film of the same name. The film tells the story of “rock’s best kept secret” in the San Fernando Valley, the birthplace of records by Fleetwood Mac, Nirvana, Rick Springfield and Tom Petty.

However, speaking to The Sun, Grohl revealed that he wanted a more outlandish and showbiz pairing for the album originally and planned to team ‘Copacabana’ singer Manilow with rock band Weezer. “I was this fucking close to getting them on a record. I thought it was going to happen, it would’ve been fucking huge,” he told the paper. Adding: “He (Manilow) was the first person who said he’d do it but was the last we tracked down. And we had to fly to Hawaii.”

Grohl premiered the Sound City at the Sundance Festival in Utah where he unveiled his Sound City Players supergroup, made up of alumni of the studio including Krist Novoselic, Stevie Nicks Rick Springfield and Rick Nielsen. The band performed a headline show in London on February 19 with Krist Novoselic, Pat Smear, Rick Springfield and Rick Neilsen all appearing onstage.
