Will it ever happen…doubt it!!

Universal scraps ‘The Dark Tower’ — could it land elsewhere?
The hugely ambitious adaptation of “The Dark Tower” that director Ron Howard is shepherding is no more at Universal Studios. But it’s not entirely dead, at least not yet.
That’s because Howard’s company, Imagine, still retains the rights to Stephen King’s series of novels and is now free to try to set up the project elsewhere. It’s probably a long shot — potentially risky (and expensive) projects rejected by one studio aren’t exactly easy sells at others — but Howard, producer Brian Grazer and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman do have a fair amount of pull in Hollywood.
According to Deadline, which first reported the news, Universal balked at the idea of committing to making three films and two seasons of TV to tell the sprawling story in King’s seven-book series (an eighth is due next year), which centers on a gunslinger named Roland Deschain (Javier Bardem was reportedly attached to star). The studio only wanted to do the first film (the site says some at Universal dispute that notion), but the filmmakers wanted to do at least that plus the first batch of TV episodes in one big shoot.
Regardless of what exactly happened at Universal, “The Dark Tower” is now in limbo. Goldsman’s production company, Weed Road, is based at Warner Bros., and Deadline and others mention it as a possible destination for the project. Warner Bros. has certainly had success with big stories — it’s behind the “Harry Potter” movies and is currently financing a two-movie adaptation of “The Hobbit.”
Stay tuned.

The Couch Potato Report – July 16th, 2011

Inside this week’s Couch Potato Report is a Canadian acting Icon, Johnny Depp as a lizard, and Das Boot.

Christopher Plummer is an acting icon…a Canadian acting icon.

Born in Toronto in December 1929, since he began acting he has appeared in many films – including Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, The Man Who Would Be King, The Return of the Pink Panther, Battle of Britain, Waterloo, Dragnet, Malcolm X, 12 Monkeys, The Insider, Somewhere in Time, A Beautiful Mind, Inside Man, and in 1965 – he gave us a performance that he is still beloved aound the world for – he was Captain Georg von Trapp in THE SOUND OF MUSIC.

In addition to his work on the silver screen, he is a Tony Award winning stage actor, who continues to act on Broadway, and in productions staged at Stratford, Ontario’s world renowned Shakespeare Festival.

Christopher Plummer is one of the best and most renowned actors that our country has ever produced…he is a Canadian acting Icon!

Mr. Plummer once again returned to the Stratford Festival in the summer of 2010 in their production of THE TEMPEST as the lead character, Prospero, a Duke cast away on a deserted island, plotting his revenge against those who put him there…and then having to decide what to actually do when gets close to the enemies who robbed him of his dukedom.
Stratford’s production of THE TEMPEST is minimalist, but what they have produced is very effective. It is engaging, moving, and even very funny at times.

Plus, Plummer is surrounded by a great cast of mostly unknown actors who match his performance word for word and beat by beat.

I highly recommend this version of THE TEMPEST, and if you have never seen Plummer on stage, don’t miss it!

He is a Canadian acting Icon!

The great Christopher Plummer appeared with modern day icon – Johnny Depp – in director Terry Gilliam’s 2009 film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, but Depp had solidified his own iconic position in movie history long before that eclectic and odd film came out…he did it through his performances in movies like Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Ed Wood, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, and the Pirates of the Caribbean films, among others, and now he provides the voice of an goofy and kooky chameleon in the animated film RANGO.

Rango is a lizard who becomes freed from the confines of his tank and decides to creates a new identity for himself when he stumbles into a Wild West town in the desert. He also accidentally talks his way into the role of Sheriff in the lawless town of Dirt.

RANGO is an animated movie, and it is bright and colourful and packed with enough oddball characters to keep the young kids interested, but it also has enough to entertain us older kids.

There is action, adventure, romance, it features a great voice cast – which in addition to Depp includes Isla Fisher, Ned Beatty, Stephen Root, Harry Dean Stanton and Timothy Olyphant – and the movie often parodies the spaghetti Western genre, with great success.

RANGO is a very entertaining film, and it is also a lot of fun at times. I didn’t love it…but I really liked it!
I also really liked THE LINCOLN LAWYER, even though I had seen most of what was on screen before in other movies and procedural cop shows like LAW & ORDER, but the performances are so strong that it just won me over.
Adapted from the novel of the same name by Michael Connelly THE LINCOLN LAWYER is a police procedural thriller starring Matthew McConaughey as a defence lawyer who works out of his Lincoln.

Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei plays his ex-wife and occasional moral compass, and Ryan Phillippe stars as a wealthy Realtor who accused of raping a prostitute.

McConaughey takes the case, but as he digs deeper into the facts he discovers that all the evidence points toward the fact that his client might not only be guilty in this case, but in an old case as well.

Like I said, THE LINCOLN LAWYER isn’t fresh and new and anything we haven’t seen before, but McConaughey, Tomei, Phillippe and the entire supporting cast are so good that the result is a very good film that I really liked.

Several of the characters in THE LINCOLN LAWYER have blood on their hands, as do more than a few of the people who populate the film BLOODWORTH.
BLOODWORTH is one of those movies where it probably would have been a heck of a more fun being on the set with the people involved than it is to watch the results of their work.

Kris Kristofferson, Val Kilmer, Dwight Yoakam and Hilary Duff headline the cast and I would have loved to be a fly on the wall during the filming of this movie!! Man, the conversations these older stars must have had with Duff and the rest of the young cast!!
Anyway, BLOODWORTH stars Kristofferson as a man returning to his hometown forty years after running out on his wife and three sons. He is not necessarily seeking redemption, and the family he left behind is bitter that he both 1) left, and 2) returned. The only redeeming character in the whole film is his grandson, a high school dropout who is an aspiring writer who falls for a woman his brother has gotten pregnant.

Bottom line here is that there isn’t much to recommend about the film as the majority of characters in it are extremely unlikable and it is extremely boring at times, but MAN I would have loved to have been there when they were making it!!
It is supernatural horror thriller time now, and if the movie INSIDIOUS had finished as strong as it started, I would be highly recommending it right now!! But since it didn’t, all I can say is that it isn’t great…but it is a very good flick.
I still think that the premise behind INSIDIOUS is fantastic – shortly after moving, a young family discover that dark spirits have possessed their home and their son has inexplicably fallen into a coma.

Trying to escape the haunting and save their son, they move again only to discover that it was not their house that was haunted.

THAT IS AN AWESOME CONCEPT FOR A FILM, but the filmmakers – who also gave us the SAW and PARANORMAL ACTIVITY films – lose their way in the middle of the movie and give us something more similar to POLTERGEIST.

I didn’t dislike INSIDIOUS, it is a good supernatural horror thriller with more than a few jumps, frights and creepy scenes, but I wish it has finished as strong as it started, and that its premise was fully realized.
I have another horror thriller for you now, but this one comes with its tongue planted firmly in its cheek!!

This is another one of those hybrid monster films where the acting is wooden and the script is laughable at times…yet the result is good cinematic fun.

Yes, DINOCROC VS. SUPERGATOR is good fun!!
DINOCROC VS. SUPERGATOR – and I do so love saying that title – DINOCROC VS. SUPERGATOR is about two beasts created deep within the secret island laboratories of an unscrupulous biotech corporation who have broken free of their compound and escaped and they are killing everything in their path.
It is up to a male undercover investigator, a beautiful female Fish & Game officer, and a cold-blooded swamp hunter known only as “The Cajun” to track them down and eliminate them.

But no
matter the story, this movie is all about the climactic battle between the two beasts!!
Yes, the acting is wooden and the script is laughable at times, but DINOCROC VS. SUPERGATOR isn’t meant to be anything than light-hearted entertainment, and it succeeds at that!
A movie that doesn’t succeed…at least as a piece of entertainment is MIRAL, the latest release from Julian Schnabel, the Academy Award-nominated director of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
MIRAL stars Freida Pinto from SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE as a young woman growing up in East Jerusalem as she is forced to deal with the realities of occupation and war in every area of her life.
MIRAL is based on a true story and the film is interesting at times, but it is never great. I have no regrets that I’ve seen it…but I can’t recommend that you do.
Up next…some rock and or roll!!
In the late 1970s and into the 80s Foreigner was one of the biggest bands in rock and roll, due to their hit songs Head Games, Cold As Ice, Waiting For A Girl Like You, Double Vision, Dirty White Boy, Feels Like the First Time, Urgent, Juke Box Hero, Hot Blooded and I Want to Know What Love Is.
FOREIGNER: LIVE is a 105 minute concert from the band, which technically exist today in name only. Lead guitarist Mick Jones is the only original member still in the band and vocalist Lou Gramm is long gone, replaced by sound-alike Kelly Hansen.
Still, even with the new line-up – that also includes Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham’s son Jason on drums – there is no denying that these songs are rock classics, they weren’t hit songs by accident, and so I enjoyed FOREIGNER: LIVE because of the music.

After all of these years, I still love these songs!!
Yes, I still enjoy the music of the band called Foreigner, no matter who the lead singer is, I have enjoyed them for as long as I can remember.

And that is about how long I have also enjoyed nature documentaries…for as long as I can remember…and this week I enjoyed one I hadn’t seen before, called THE GREATEST PLACES.
Shot in IMAX, so the picture and sound of the film on Blu-ray are incredible, THE GREATEST PLACES takes us to some of the world’s most geographically incredible locations.

We see Greenland’s massive icebergs, Madagascar’s unique inhabitants, Tibet’s ancient plateaus, and some incredible waterfalls!!
THE GREATEST PLACES features wildlife, natural land formations, and brilliant topography, and at only forty minutes long it is far too short…but I enjoyed every second of it and highly recommend it!!
Finally this week is a 3 hour and 28 minute German war film from the early 1980s that takes place almost entirely in a submarine…and I couldn’t recommend it strongly enough.

DAS BOOT is a classic!!
Along with THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER and RUN SILENT RUN DEEP, DAS BOOT will always be found at or near the top of any list about the greatest submarine movies ever made.
DAS BOOT is brand new on Blu-ray and it looks amazing in High Definition, and the sounds of war are fantastic!!

This is an epic movie, with an epic running time, and there are some great new documentaries and special features on the Blu-ray!

As said, I couldn’t recommend it strongly enough.

DAS BOOT, the IMAX film THE GREATEST PLACES, FOREIGNER: LIVE, MIRAL, DINOCROC VS. SUPERGATOR, INSIDIOUS, BLOODWORTH, the likable THE LINCOLN LAWYER, the very likable animated film RANGO, and Shakespeare’s THE TEMPEST, starring Canadian acting Icon Christopher Plummer are all available now in stores and online.

Coming up inside the next Couch Potato Report

The made-in-Quebec film RETURN TO SENDER, Russell Brand, Helen Mirren, and Jennifer Garner star in a remake of the 1981 Academy Award winning comedy ARTHUR, and Terry Gilliam’s 1985 classic BRAZIL debuts on Blu-ray…and I’ll tell you why it is for fans only!!
I’m Dan Reynish. I’ll have more on those, and some other releases, in seven days.

For now, that’s this week’s COUCH POTATO REPORT.

Enjoy the movies and I’ll see you back here again next time on The Couch!

I think we all do!!

Gervais wants Sheen to accept Emmy
Ricky Gervais has been left stunned after learning he has personally been nominated for an Emmy award for his controversial slot hosting the Golden Globes – and he wants embattled actor Charlie Sheen to accept the prize if he wins.
The British funnyman shocked fans and the A-list crowd at the ceremony in January after making outrageous jibes about the star-studded audience.
His performance was met with complaints from several celebrities, as well as event organizers, who labelled the jokes “totally unacceptable”.
But now Gervais’ time on the show has led to him being nominated for Best Special Class Program at the 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards – a category left blank on the original nominations list while the producers are vetted for eligibility.
And The Office star is amused by the turn of events – on his official blog he writes, “That Golden Globes thing I did has been nominated for an Emmy. Ha ha. Hilarious.”
Gervais reveals he was unaware he would be up for a prize, telling GoldDerby.com, “No, I didn’t realize that I was nominated in this category. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. It’s confusing. There are so many producers of a TV show that the academy has to go through all of the forms they make you fill out.
“Usually, you have to kill someone to get that kind of press I got hosting the Golden Globes… I can’t believe the reaction it caused. I don’t care if you’re offended. Just because you’re offended, doesn’t mean you’re right. If you don’t like what I did at the Globes, you should see my stand-up act. Your head will explode.”
And Gervais, who primarily resides in his native U.K., reveals if he wins the category, he wants Sheen to collect the trophy for him: “I’d like Charlie Sheen to accept my Emmy if I win for hosting the Golden Globes… because he’s a tortured one – like me.”
The star is up against the Oscars, Grammys and Tonys telecasts for the prize, which will be handed out at the Creative Arts ceremony, held one week before the main Emmy event, which airs on September 18.

‘Mad Men,’ ‘Family’ nab Emmy noms
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Stylish 1960s advertising drama “Mad Men” and mockumentary comedy “Modern Family” will vie again for the top prizes at the 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards in a field packed with newcomers and veteran actors in new roles.
“Mad Men,” the three-time Emmy winner for best dramatic show, scored 19 nominations Thursday for TV’s highest honors, including best drama series and acting nods for its stars Jon Hamm and Elisabeth Moss.
ABC’s “Modern Family,” which took the top comedy prize last year, earned a total of 17 nominations, including mentions for stars Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara.
Other contenders in the best drama series race were HBO’s new prohibition era series “Boardwalk Empire” with a total of 18 nods, CBS legal program “The Good Wife,” freshman fantasy “Game of Thrones,” “Dexter” and “Friday Night Lights.”
Among comedy series, “Modern Family” will face off for best program against veteran “30 Rock,” first time nominee “Parks and Recreation,” “The Big Bang Theory” and “The Office.”
Fox’s quirky musical comedy “Glee”, which dominated last year’s Emmy nominations, got just 12 mentions this year, including best comedy and supporting acting nods for Chris Colfer and Jane Lynch. But it failed to grab any spots in the lead acting categories.
HBO’s miniseries “Mildred Pierce” had the largest number of nominations with a total of 21, including nods for its stars Kate Winslet and Evan Rachel Wood.
FIRST TIME NOMINEES
Five of the 12 nominated comedy and drama series are first time nominees. The acting categories featured a slew of Emmy rookies including Melissa McCarthy in freshman comedy “Mike & Molly,” Martha Plimpton for “Raising Hope,” Mireille Enos in the AMC crime drama “The Killing” and Timothy Olyphant in the modern Western drama “Justified” on FX.
“It is great that we are recognizing the spectrum of television. We are here to celebrate television and let our audience around the world know how great TV is,” said John Shaffner, chairman of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
The Emmys will be handed out at a ceremony in Los Angeles on September 18, hosted by “Glee” star Jane Lynch.
HBO was again the most nominated network, despite a controversial decision this year to merge the miniseries and TV movie categories, which the cable channel has traditionally dominated.
HBO garnered 104 nominations overall, followed by CBS with 50, NBC with 46, Fox 42, and ABC with 40.
Some of TV’s favorite stars were recognized Thursday in new roles. They included former “Friends” actor Matt LeBlanc, who plays a version of himself in the Showtime satire “Episodes,” and Betty White, age 89, who earned her 17th Emmy nomination for a supporting role in comedy “Hot in Cleveland.”
Cloris Leachman, age 85, notched her 22nd nod for a supporting role as the ditzy grandmother in Fox show “Raising Hope,” while veteran Kathy Bates scored a lead actress nomination for playing a cranky lawyer in the new NBC drama “Harry’s Law.”

Kurt Cobain’s Hometown May Name Bridge in His HonorAberdeen City Council considers tribute to Nirvana frontman

Officials in Kurt Cobain’s childhood home of Aberdeen, Washington are mulling over the possibility of commemorating the late Nirvana frontman with bridge and small public park. The Aberdeen City Council is offering residents the opportunity to comment on the proposal at its July 27th meeting before making a decision. The measure calls for the Young Street Bridge over the Wishkah River to bear the grunge icon’s name, with a small park nearby to be rechristened Cobain Landing.
Though Cobain is the most famous resident of Aberdeen, some residents have already voiced qualms about honoring him in this way, mainly because of his association with drug abuse and suicide.
There is some irony in the bridge in Aberdeen being named after Cobain, as the singer had often claimed that he had briefly lived underneath a bridge over the Wishkah and that this experience inspired the lyrics of the Nevermind track “Something in the Way.”

George Harrison documentary to get October debut on HBO
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – A new George Harrison documentary featuring home movies, interviews and never before seen material will make its debut in October on HBO, the cable channel said on Wednesday.
Produced by Oscar-winner Martin Scorsese and Harrison’s widow Olivia, “George Harrison: Living in the Material World”, traces the life of the late Beatle from his musical beginnings in Liverpool to his fame with the Fab Four in the 1960s as well as his work as a philanthropist and filmmaker.
Harrison died of lung cancer in 2001 in Los Angeles at the age of 58. Although often referred to as the quiet Beatle, he wrote hit songs like “Here Comes the Sun” and “Something” for The Beatles before playing with the 1980s supergroup, Traveling Wilburys.
The 3-1/2 hour documentary includes interviews with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr as well as Eric Clapton, Yoko Ono, Phil Spector and record producer George Martin, among others. It will air in two parts on HBO on October 5 and 6, and be released in Britain on October 10 on DVD and Blu-Ray through Lionsgate, Lionsgate UK said.
Scorsese, whose music projects include “The Last Waltz” in 1978 about the final concert of The Band, and the Rolling Stones documentary “Shine a light”, said he had long been a fan of Harrison.
“So when I was offered the chance to make this picture, I jumped at it. Spending time with Olivia (Harrison), interviewing so many of George’s closest friends, reviewing all that footage, some of it never seen before, and listening to all of that magnificent music — it was a joy, and an experience I’ll always treasure,” Scorsese said in a statement.
A book accompanying the documentary will be published in late September featuring photos, letters, diaries and other memorabilia from the personal archives of Olivia and George Harrison.

Well done, Grohl!!!

Grohl throws fan out of concert
Foo Fighters rocker Dave Grohl publicly threw an unruly fan out of the band’s London gig on Monday after he started a fight with a fellow concertgoer.
The hitmakers were performing at the iTunes Festival when Grohl spotted a man in the audience causing a scuffle.
So Grohl, with his microphone in hand, decided to take action and call out the perpetrator for instigating a problem.
According to NME.com, Grohl addressed the fan from the stage, “You don’t f**king fight at my show you a**hole. Let me see him, who’s fighting right now? It’s that guy in the stripped shirt. Hey motherf**ker look at me, get the f**k out of my show right now.”
Angry Grohl added, “I don’t put up with that bulls**t – you people came here to have a good time and that guy can f**k off.”

Hey guys…it is Well Enough calling. Would you please just leave me alone?!?

Bruce Campbell says ‘Evil Dead 4’ is in the works
A fourth “Evil Dead” movie is in the offing, and if Bruce Campbell isn’t starring once again, he’s at least in the loop on the production.
Campbell, who joined Twitter over the weekend (he’s @GroovyBruce), confirmed a report from horror site Dread Central that “Evil Dead 4,” which was announced way back in 2004, is finally getting off the ground. The movie will be more of a remake/restart than a sequel to the previous “Evil Dead” movies and “Army of Darkness.”
“Believe in the remake, dawg!” Campbell tweeted in response to a follower’s question. “The project is real. In the works. Cool as hell. Scary as hell.”
Dread Central says Bob Murawski, who edited “Army of Darkness” and the three “Spider-Man” movies for director Sam Raimi, has set up shop in Michigan to begin work on “Evil Dead 4.” Bloody Disgusting further reports that Federico Alvarez will direct.
What we don’t know yet is if, or how, Campbell will be involved. Even if the new movie is basically a remake, we’d think Ash would have to be part of it somehow.

Weezer Plots Cruise, Side-by-Side Shows With the Flaming Lips
After a successful string of “Pinkerton” and “Blue Album” shows (dubbed the Memories Tour) late last year, Weezer is trying out a few more unconventional touring ideas. First the band announced two “side-by-side” shows with the Flaming Lips yesterday, while today comes news of its own cruise in 2012.

The SoCal rockers will slather on the sunscreen as they rock the lido deck on the Weezer Cruise this coming January, performing aptly-titled tracks like “Holiday,” “Island in the Sun” and many more. The four-day voyage, through Carnival Cruises, will leave from Miami on Jan. 19, sailing to Cozumel, Mexico before ending its journey back in Miami on Jan. 23.

The cruise will not only include multiple indoor and outdoor sets from Weezer — as well as a Q&A and a picture alongside the band for all passengers — but also sets from a slew of other bands. Dinosaur Jr. and its related projects (Sebadoh, J Mascis solo, Lou Barlow solo) will make a splash on the cruise, as will Wavves, Yuck, the Antlers, Free Energy, Ozma, Sleeper Agent, Boom Bip and more. And naturally, passengers can expect the typical cruise amenities of gourmet meals, casinos, pools and more.

The band’s “side-by-side” shows with the Flaming Lips will kick off later this month, on July 28 and 29 in, respectively, Holmdel, N.J. (PNC Bank Arts Center) and Long Island, N.Y. (Nikon at Jones Beach). The two acts will share one stage, alternating songs throughout the singular headlining set. Yeasayer will open both performances.
