Order of Canada recipients named
OTTAWA — Canadian actor Michael J. Fox has walked many red carpets, but he says receiving the Order of Canada is a special form of flattery.
“Any recognition is humbling and appreciated. But this is unique,” Fox said. “It is much more about being a Canadian as opposed to being a famous Canadian or celebrity. I take it to be an expression that I represent a part of Canada that means so much to me.”
Fox was among 43 recipients of the Order of Canada at the governor general’s residence on Friday. The honour recognizes lifetime achievement, community dedication and service to the country.
Acclaimed musician Robbie Robertson also received the order, which has been given to more than 5,000 Canadians. Robertson was the guitarist and vocalist in the rock group The Band. He’s also had an accomplished solo career.
“I don’t begin for a second to put myself in the league of any of these people,” Fox said. “When I listen to what they’ve done, that’s Canadian to me.”
Fox is best known for the Back to the Future movie trilogy and for starring in two television series, Family Ties and Spin City. He has also been recognized for spreading awareness about Parkinson’s disease, which he was diagnosed with in 1998. The Canadian branch of his foundation for Parkinson’s research recently gained charitable status.
Fox says a key source of inspiration has always been his mother, who attended Friday’s ceremony.
“She is just a great lady,” said Fox. “And I’m really appreciative of her.”
