Gwyneth Paltrow’s Father Bruce Dies in Rome
ROME (Reuters) – Producer and director Bruce Paltrow, the father of Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow, died in Rome on Thursday following a bout of pneumonia and a recurrence of throat cancer, her spokesman said.
Paltrow, 58, who helped produce some of the most highly rated TV series of recent decades, including hospital drama “St. Elsewhere” and “Homicide: Life on the Street,” was in Italy to celebrate his daughter’s 30th birthday.
Spokesman Stephen Huvane, in a statement issued in Los Angeles, said Paltrow’s wife, the actress Blythe Danner, was flying from Los Angeles to join her daughter in Rome.
An official at the U.S. embassy in Rome said he had been contacted about repatriating the body to the United States.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Paltrow began his career in theater in the late 1960s before moving into television and film. He made his feature directing debut with the 1982 film “A Little Sex,” starring Kate Capshaw and Tim Matheson.
Most recently he wrote and directed his daughter in the quirky 2000 comedy “Duets,” a story about a father and daughter who come together through a shared love of karaoke.
Paltrow married the Tony Award-winning stage actress Danner in 1970, and the couple had two children, Gwyneth and Jake. Danner, 59, is currently starring in the new CBS hospital drama “Presidio Med.”
Gwyneth, who celebrated her 30th birthday last week in the company of fashion designer Valentino, left Rome’s San Camillo hospital without word on Thursday evening and was driven away huddled in the back of a car.
Her spokesman in Los Angeles said no details would be made public about memorial or funeral services. “The family is just regrouping,” he said.
